Would Buffy Have Survived without Angel??

So, I busted out the first season of Buffy DVD's yesterday and got to thinking what the show would have been like if Joss and Co. never thought of the character of Angel. For me it seems like, towards the end of the first season and definitly in the second season the Angel and Buffy romance kind of drove the show. Without it I'm not sure if the show would have made it without him. Now, I'm sure Joss would have thought of something interesting, but I still wonder.

So, what do you guys think? Would the show have been cancelled after a couple of seasons, of am I way off base here.

Not likely. There were plenty other interesting characters. If Angel wasnt there then Joss would have thought of something else.

There was enough going on and enough potential to keep it going. After all, when Angel left the show went on for 4 more seasons. He was just one character. He doesnt deserve that much credit.

I didn't mean he deserved all the credit. I was just saying that early on shows get cancelled (at least nowadays) really quickly and maybe if Angel wasn't there for the epic love story not that many people would have seen how great the show was right away.

Maybe there would have been a Xander-Buffy relationship! I so would've loved that! And willow would be jelous. There could've been a conflict between willow and buffy! Teen bitching sessions! Gotta love em. Loads could've happened. Although Angel was important, I dont think he was vital to the shows success, although his character certainly was much loved and maybe the show wouldn't have done as well... But i still think it would've done brilliantly!

if angel wasn't in the show i think that it could had other special characters.. buffy could possibily be with xander but spike could arrive soon to the show. i don't know but i think that the first 3 season could be really boring with angel.
