Xander left Anya at the alter, because he saw a future they could have, including his parents as a red alarm. But do you think they could have become like his parents, like the future that the demon showed him? Even though it was all lies, it could happen. Married people get smashed by each other and it ends bad. It could happen to Anya and Xander as well. Do you think that if they got married, it would have worked? Taking their relationship status up to that point into account?

Hmmm, good question!

I think all relationships - especially long term intimate ones - are really hard... we all have baggage and they certainly had theirs. But yes, I do think they had a strong enough of a bond and connection and understanding of each other - that would and could grow in time, that even though they probably would have it rocky spots, that yes, they could have made it. And it would have been their own relationship, not a replica of his parents.

I think Xander and Anya had a great relationship, and it totally would have worked in the long run!
Yes, I definitely think it could happen, and I think that was what scared Xander the most. Even when though the demon was just trying to ruin Anya's life the way she did his, Xander was terrified of becoming like his dad. He had deep-rooted insecurities about his family way before he ever met Anya; look at how he reacted to Cordelia's comment about his "family's drunken Christmas fights" in "Amends".
My heart goes out to Xander and the hurt he felt over how dysfunctional his family was, which is why I totally understand why he ran in "Hell's Belles". It doesn't make what he did right, but I can understand that he wasn't ready to get married yet. He needed to realize that he was nothing like his father, and I don't think at that point that he had, yet.

Considering that after all they'd been through, by the end of season 7 they were still able to reconcile and were clearly in the beginning stages of starting over again, I think they could have made it. Or at least I think they had a good shot at it.

I think if Xander married her they would have had a very happy life together (or at least up untill she died in S7 XD). They were both human when they were planning on being married, so the demon kids wouldn't have happened.

Xander busting his back fighting monsters could have though, but then again Xander lifts and works around dangerous equipment 5 days a week. He could just as easily ended up dead or badly hurt before 30 simply by working in a dangerous environment (hard hats are hardy good protection)

EDIT: I want to add that I understand Xander leaving her that day. If someone showed me my feature, fake or real, and I didn't like what I saw, I wouldn't want to take that risk. Things were great the way they were, why risk ruining it all over social status?

I think it would've worked. I never bought the whole Xander-leaving-Anya-at-the-alter-for-their-own-good plot. As much as I dislike Xander, he wouldn't grow up to be his father. IMO, the breaking up of Xanya was contrived and ill-conceived, and ruined one of the only good points of Xander's character.

I don't think it would've worked. I think once you have in your mind that something WILL JUST NOT WORK, it won't.

If that demon hadn't shown up, Xander would've found another reason to not marry Anya. I'm not doubting that he loved her, but Xander doesn't seem like the marrying kind.
