Ok, so we've all heard the rumours. This generations' "Singers" such as Hilary Duffy, Britney Spears, or Ashlee Simpson can't actually sing. Sometimes, maybe a little, sometimes not at all. Their voices have been performance enhanced digitally to make it sound like they can sing.

My question: Does it matter?

It depends on the person. Some people are lacking with the vocal talent, but make up for it by being such strong entertainers (i.e. Madonna...granted she can sing better than Britney, but her voice doesn't bring me to my knees). These people are still capable of making songs I like to hear, however, they usually get so played out on the radio that I never buy the cd.

I prefer people who can really sing and rap and when they do it live as well as they sound on their cd, they really earn lots of points from me (not that they care 😛 )

Music has been "enhanced" electronically for years - I remember in the 70s the likes of Rod Stewart and Elton John almost always double-tracked their vocals to make them sound better (but, then again, those guys could really sing🙂). Nobody bothers if it's U2 or REM 'cos it's all part of the "production" process, so I don't think it's that big a deal for these other acts. I just wouldn't buy their music 'cos I think it's crap 🙂

to some people.. to me, yes. i cannot have any respect by a singer if they can't actually sing.. but tehn again.. those "singers" like Britney Spears are the ones who acn sell more albums.. i honneslty don't get it.. i know that on rock in rio lisbon, she was very boooed coz it was obvious she was doing playback ( she was the only oen in a lot of bands..) but still..most of the teenagers who were tehre still say she was actually singing.. *srhugs*

Yeah, it's like you say, Mr P. Those guys can really sing

Here's the thing. Try this.

Go to Google. Type either of the names of the 3 performers you mentioned (Rod Stewart, Elton John, or U2), along with the search term "Unplugged".

Unplugged means they walk out onto a stage with a guitar, or sit at a piano and sing, right?

OK, now try the search term "Unplugged" with Hilary Duff. Tell me if you notice a difference.

I haven't heard Hillary sing live and I really haven't heard anything bad about her singing....That Lindsay Lohan song is clearly enhanced and sounds like the worst song Britney Spears never recorded 😀

Well the music I listen to is generally enhanced to make it more coherant and soften it a bit so listening to it live does add a nice umph. However The Killers are terrible live, which is a real shame.

A lot of acts - "real" or not - do enhance their music in some way, shape, or form. Just as Mr. P stated. I think what defines these artists, though, is their pure talent, creativity, and ingenuity. The music has to have some kind of depth to it, some kind of staying power. I just prefer my music to go past the typical "let's get naked" or "let's all dance around" motifs of pop music.

I've tried to find a deeper meaning behind "I'm a Slave 4U"...and it just isn't there...This deeply saddens me...heh...

It really depends on the problem.i.e, Britney lipsynchs sometimes, cause she dances at the same time. It's only good to lip s. if you have a good reason.i.e., Ashlee is very talented. She can sing, and writes her own music. She lip s. because she has a soar throat, and could barely sing. For all those who say she can't sing, well you're wrong. If you watch The Ashlee Simpson Show, like me, you'll see her sing, without mouthing the words. But there are just some very fake artists such as Hilary Duff, and Lindsay Lohan.Hilary lip s. all of her performances. On Lindsay's latest video, her voice is backed up by a computerish sound, that doesn't sound like hers.If you want to hear her real voice, just watch Mean Girls, during a scene where she sings with the Plastics. When I first saw her video, Rumours, I was shocked. Her voice was backed up, because it wasn't good.I would'nt go to a concert if an artist like Hilary is performing, cause what's the use if your not going to actually hear them sing without a tape. You might as well listen to your cd player.Artists that dance for most of their performances, such as Usher, shouldn't dance too much, cause they get exhausted, and can't sing well.

Anyone who thinks they've never bought anything that's been enhanced is kidding themselves. I think pretty much everyone gets a little help in the studio nowadays...which doesn't necessarily mean they can't actually sing. 😀

If they can't stand on their own two feet musically then why do they have major record deals. Im fearing the day when the music industry is reduced to nothin but 14 year old girls with pretty faces singing into "Hit Singles for Dummies" machines while pouring Diet Pepsi Twist provocatively all over them selves during a glitter laden softcore porn of a music video. I say hats off to the "White Stripes." Now here's a band who have drawn a line in the sand. They play there instruments into a microphone that records it. That's all. Its basic and primal. A man and his guitar and his audience. A woman and here drums and her audience.

Ofcorse i could be wrong.

 dittio to that....

Actually, I like it when it's enhanced (slightly) only becuase they sound like **** live. The voices are scratchy and stuff.

That's why the CD's are better! :nana:

Do you remember that show WB Superstars, where they were scamming the contestants by telling them they could sing, but really they were looking for the worst singer?

Well, I watched that one time, and there was this girl on there, who actually knew she couldn't sing, but she said it didn't matter, because they could enhance her voice to make it sound like she could, and in this way the world wouldn't have to be deprived of the wonder and natural magnificence that was her. So I don't know...are you guys who are telling me not to worry about music enhancement, saying she was right? Cause if she was, I'm just going to sit at home, and play the harmonica for my musical entertainment.

And no, it wasn't Hilary Duff. 😀

Most bands I listen to sound find live and don't sound too digitally enhanced. I tend not to buy Britney Spears, or Ashlee Simpson etc but sometime I do download thier songs , it all really depends on the song. Sometimes thier just too damn catchy!

Avril Lavinge can't sing live though....

See that's why I pick bands who can actually play live...

But ugh I think the White Stripes are so overrated...

Well, given that I haven't bought an album for years, I'm not sure if my opinion is relevant now. But hey, it's the internet, when is my opinion relevant? To me, it's about how much I enjoy the music. I just don't care whether it's enhanced or not if I like the end result. I dislike tweenage mimers because their music is so samey. But I'm a big Smashing Pumpkins fan, and their last three albums consist of almost entirely electronically manipulated music for a sound that simply cannot be replicated live. The Pumpkins could still rock ass live too, but they sounded completely different. Point is, when I'm privately headbanging to Machina, I don't really care that Billy's voice sounds nothing like that on stage.

My secret shame is also that after all these years, I still like Cher's Believe.

Heh, I can never ever listen to that song after I watched Living Conditions and Kathy the first time (believe me I would've thought about killing Kathy too, demon or no demon).

Other than that I gotta agree with you Jill, I usually don't buy music, but when I do I don't care a lot.. I don't buy that kind of music, but that's got little to do with anything cause it's not a decision I've made it's just that.. well, I just haven't, that's all. I listen to the music I like to listen to, whatever's good/fun/gives me anything at all...

I never ever ever liked this song but after seing this episode I truly want to smash the radio when it's on.

The only records I buy nowadays are from the 80's and 90's on vinyl so I'm not really with it when it comes to popular music (but I did catch that groovy new Destiny's Child song, ya'll think they're enhanced?)

I'm kinda part of the "I really don't care as long as the music's good"-crowd. I listen a lot to electronica of all kinds (mostly dirty nasty hard electroclash-beats like the new prodigy album) and I bet you that music it pretty much enhanced but probably not in the same way as they enhance perhaps Lindsey Lohan (poor girl, I so love all her movies, even that parent trap one).
But I do like Britney and it's so obvious she's been enhanced to the max on her records, cuase she can't carry her sound from cd to the stage.

Whatever happened to bands trying to bring their live sound on to a record and not the other way around? I myself am in the process of making a record with my band and I would never go in the studio to record a song if I haven't tried it out in front of a crowd before. But that's just me. :dj:

Avril Lavigne isn't that good when it comes to singing live. But when she's doing a song, that doesn't need much screaming, she nails it.But when she has to scream all the time, her throat gets soar.
