What's the difference between an elf and a faerie?
In case it seems a strange question...I've read the fictional works on the gnomes (The Secret Book of the Gnomes and others of the series, and cartoon based on it, describe elves and faeries as well), played tabletop fantasy roleplaying games and read the novels for them (and also for Shadowrun, funny how 6' tall elves can be called by the racist name of Keebs, which is short for Keebler), Sandman comics, read the Baen works of elves that were so sensitive to cold iron, read the myths and legends and even some academic works on the folklore, and then there's Disney and various movies. In some cases faeries are almost like gods and able to cast wishes, in some cases they're practically demons, and sometimes they're far weirder. Elves can make cookies, shoes, toys, or they can be part of elegant if often racist (even against other elves) societies, and they may be easily distracted fops who are more concerned with play, or great artists or dispassionate sages with a strict hierarchy. Some elves, like in Elfquest, can be into loose sex and orgies, while other elves practice arranged marriages and eternal love. Some are at one with the wilderness while others would hate to be cast out of their fine crystal palaces.
I guess that's why I'm confused. And I'm even more confused when others who have answered apparently know the difference already. 😕😳
