I came across something interesting on tumblr,

Source: http://blogobuffy.tumblr.com/post/8344809904/shinzyhpfan-asked-buffy-selfless-shes-fought

She's fought down Angelus at the height of evil, sparred with Willow when grief overtook her friend. She's battled vampires wearing her classmates' faces and thrown off a hyena-possessed Xander. As far as monsters contained within the bodies of her friends go, she's seen them all before. This shouldn't be different.

But it is, because it's Anya, who's been her friend for so long and yet not, whom she'd cared about and had compassion for and kind of empathized with, as another more-than-human trapped in an ordinary life and rejected by the ones who'd loved her. It's Anya, whom she's failed, whom she'd sat with on her porch stairs with her last year and didn't understand the other girl's pain until she'd seen her standing outside the Magic Box hours later, her eyes defiant and angry and shattered. It's not like acquaintances who no longer are; it's not like the friends who've known how much she loves them. Anya's somewhere in between, caught at the fringes of a group that's cast her aside.

And now she's a killer.

Anya is spitting insults at her like a threatened cat, dodging and swinging and swerving and no real threat to Buffy, and Buffy still can't speak. Not when there are no words left- neither of comfort nor offense- not when Anya's screwed up this badly and Buffy needs to do her duty. This can only end one way.

And yet, when the sword is buried in Anya's chest (has it killed her? Can it?), this feels more like murder than duty ever has before.

This thread isn't about the ethics of Anya slaughtering 12 jerks or what side you are on in Empty Places, it is about the friendship of Anya and Buffy (as well as the scoobies). It's about the time when Anya pretty much helped Buffy in The Gift significantly, to Get It Done when she said ''I'm not your friend''.

Some observations and thoughts:

-After Hell's Bell's, who is comforting her? D'Hoffryn. Not Buffy, Willow, Tara or even Dawn.
-I think the only ever real human friend Anya had was Giles, and he was in England when the marriage between her and Xander was broken off.
-I think the reason why she became, slowly over season 7, more friendly towards Andrew, because they never really fitted in with the Scooby gang or potentials. When Andrew was doing his documentary, Anya was pretty much one of the very few people who gave him the time of the day and treated him well. Both were frequently the mockery of alot of people, and feelings of loneliness.
-When Anya dies in Chosen, there is none of the feelings of shock, loss in the scoobies, only Andrew and Xander seem to be torn up over it.
-In the Restless dream sequences, Anya plays a secondary, minor character: in Willow's, she is a laughing classmate, in Giles, she performs awkward jokes, and in Xander's, she has a role, but he is checking out Willow and Tara.

So my question is: Would you consider Buffy, Willow, Dawn, Spike, Tara, etc to be friends with Anya?

I don't think they're friends, no. They are friendly at times, but for the vast majority of the series, Anya isn't a friend to Buffy, Willow or Dawn, and really, it isn't difficult to see why.

Really, when you think about it, has Anya ever given them a reason to be her friend, to do anything more than tolerate her? She tries to murder Willow right off the bat after becoming human, and makes it crystal clear that she's only hanging around with Team Buffy because that's where Xander is. She openly expresses disdain and condescension towards Dawn for three seasons. And she's rude to, quite literally, everybody. She fights alongside them, yes, and that gets her bravery points, but Spike did that too in S4-7, and he was only ever friends with Andrew and Dawn. The difference is that Spike understands that the Scoobies don't like him, and why.

So no, I don't think they're friends.

When the Potentials arrive, Spike decides to "get out, get drunk, repeat as necessary" with Anya because he is also an outsider and he likes her, even with the awkward moment when Anya is snooping around trying to determine if Spike is up to his old tricks and he catches her in his bedroom. Andrew is also a friend of Anya and decides that she is coming with him when they go to the hospital to get supplies and indulge in a wheelchair fight. He ends up saying that she is the perfect woman.

Anya is the one who comes up with the idea of using Thor's Hammer against Glory and she contributes knowledge (such as witnessing an ascension in Season 3) that the others do not have access to. But their trust is limited - Anya would prefer to be a vengeance demon than a student and although she finds a niche for herself in running a business, her idea of monetizing Buffy's slayer duties is just too far away from their way of thinking. Anya is also a friend of the Buffybot after being asked "How's your money?" but this is no more real than the robot.

I have no problem with Buffy deciding that Anya has returned to the realm of demons and is therefore a legitimate target. If you are in a sports league and your star player moves to another team, you don't cut him some slack next time you go up against him just because you used to play together. Nor do you discuss business with someone who left your company and went to work for a rival - that can get you fired for legitimate reasons.

Yeah, I'd pretty much agree with most of what you wrote, and this is coming from someone who quite likes Anya. I mean, yeah, she hasn't given much reason for say, Willow who Anya tried to kill her to tolerate her, but even initally if the reason why she hanged around the scoobies was because of Xander, I think, over time, she generally, wanted to do right (I'm talking pre- Season 7), but she had a wealth of demon knowledge. She reminded me of Cordelia and Oz: Initally in there for their boyfriend/ girlfriend, yet stuck around for the battle. Yet, of course, they weren't ex-demons with a 1000 yr history of murder, sadism and torture, which does make them better than Anya (way better). However, I think there was a time when Buffy and Anya were friends- specifically, season 5. Say, with, The Gift. The Dagon Sphere, the hammer. By Chosen, she isn't together, fully, with Xander yet she goes into battle, and dies. Although her death isn't like Doyle's, it isn't a complete sacrifice, she willingly knew the odds, and still went into battle. Although like you said, bravery points, I think part of her motivation was Xander, Andrew and Giles.

About Anya's general rudeness: Yeah, the way she talked to Dawn like she was 5 annoyed me. I'm the little sister in my family, and I just cringed at lines such as ''hey kid!'' ''you're too young for coffee'' That said, strong, healthy communication isn't one of the Scooby Gangs strong points. When Anya is rude, Willow is being naive and lets her curiosity get the best of her and Xander is being self righteous. I always admire people who speak there mind, but I'm not denying that Anya was way off. Say in the Bargaining / Afterlife arc, she blatantly says ''maybe you are going crazy. From hell''. So I definitely agree with you about reasons why they wouldn't be friends with Anya.

I do completely understand Buffy's reasoning in Selfless. I do. Someone is killing people, and you were once that someone's bridesmaid. However- the impression I get from Anya's story into darkness, I draw instant comparisons to Dark Willow. If the Scoobies realised how much in need of a friend Anya needed, or at least some degree of understanding, she wouldn't be so emotionally unstable to make a decision to go back to being a vengeance demon. Yes, Anya is at fault here, but I can't stop thinking that if the Scoobies were more open, and helpful, this wouldn't have happened. Same with Dark Willow- they didn't realise that her addiction was driven not by a high- but a need to be something more than ''Willow with her mousy ways''. Spending a couple of years with someone, working side by side, extends more than being a business partner or a team mate. The reasons why an average worker would move to a new business is driven usually by economically, completely rational reasoning. Sport, it is the same with rational and economics, but also opportunity. Anya's decision to become a demon again is more complex: it was about solace. To me, D'Hoffryn is the villain in this situation: he asked an emotionally vulnerable woman who had just been humiliated to think about returning to vengeance reversing any progression she had made to humanity.

I never thought of them as friends really. Friendly at times perhaps but I really don't think Buffy liked Anya very much, I don't mean to say that she disliked her, I just think that they never really got the time to properly get to know each other or understand each other. I would say there was a certain respect there but not friendship.

As for Dawn... I think she could have become a friend of Anya's as time moved on but from having a crush on Xander to all the drama that rocked her life for a while bonding with Anya wasn't really a priority. But had Anya lived I think they might have become close in the future.

I think that Anya was pretty much tolerated because she was with Xander, and while Buffy and the others might have considered her as a friend, she was only that, and never officially one of the Scoobies. As has been mentioned, the gang supported Xander after the wedding broke up, and Buffy wasn't in the least bit hesitant about planning to kill her once she resumed her vengeance demon activities. Granted, she was just about as determined to stop Dark Willow and Angelus, but they were totally different from Willow and angel, both in attitude and physical appearance. In effect, they were not the people who she loved, but evil beings who only resembled them. Anya remained Anya, both in form and personality.

I think they are friends, but they don't realize it.

I completely agree with this. Especially for Anya. I don't think she wanted to accept their friendship, and kept them at a distance, but not because she didn't like them, just because she still had allot to learn about herself, what being human meant and how to function as a human.

She may have said their not her friends, but she didn't run away like she could have, and after Xander left her, she didn't leave she still stayed in their lives

Giles was definitely her friend, look how she embraces him when he comes in and saves them from Dark Willow or when he leaves for England, the way she grabbed him was very child like. Which makes sense, he gave her a place in the world outside of Xander, she had a job, her own money and a life - that she was good at, and it didn't revolve around Xander (kinda)

After Xander leaves her, Anya flees town, the scoobies don't get a chance to speak to her. The fact they knew, suggests they tried though.

In Season 6, she tries to talk Willow down, she helps protect Andrew and Warren from Willow, and risks her own life to keep the binding spell on Willow to help Buffy fight her.

And in Season 7, Willow spoke to D'hoffryn on her behalf to release Anya as a vengeance demon. She tried to save Anya, she did what Buffy should have been doing.

Buffy in season 7 was a bitca. The only person she had any time for was Spike because she thought he was the only one that had a chance of fighting. She ignored her friends and threatened stupid things like letting Spike kill Wood, because she was at a total lose for what to do in season 7, and Spike was the second physically strongest person on the team. Everyone else got treated like crap by her and we got to really see that when it came to Anya, because she was so quick to jump right into killing her without looking for a way around it.

Friends? They hate her. Obviously Anya's an obnoxious, remorseless serial killer but there are better reasons. Personal reasons.

Buffy hates Anya because she steals Xander, her white knight, her minion and her potential love interest and dares to have sex with Spike. Buffy can't do anything about it, she has to grit her teeth, play nice and tolerate her. But Buffy can be patient, she waits for a reason, for that one, perfect Casus belli and in "Selfless" she gets it alright. She can finally kill the bitch, get rid of her once and for all and walk away feeling morally superior. Gutting Anya with a sword is probably one of the most satisfying things Buffy's ever done, better than gutting Faith, better than sex. Sadly, Anya survives but now she's merely a human again and humans are fragile. She might die in some big battle, paired with the worst fighter ever, in a dangerous position, far from anybody else. Guess who'll place her there?

Dawn's had a crush on Xander since forever, she's truly in love with him. You don't expect her to be a friend of Anya, now do you? We're talking Anya here, right?

Willow? That's thoroughly explored on the show. I think that what Anya did at the end of season 6 and then in "Same Time, Same Place" bought her some points, enough for Willow to intervene and basically save her life in "Selfless" but still, Willow barely tolerates her.

Spike? Friends with benefits? Yes. Actual friends? I don't think so, although they do seem to get each other.

Tara? I'd say Anya considers Tara to be her friend but I don't know if it's mutual because Tara's pretty much impenetrable, a mystery. It's very hard to guess what she really feels.

No, I don't think they were friends, not really. They never opted to be in each other's company when it wasn't about slaying. Anya's ties to the scoobies was entirely dependent on Xander. The first friend Anya made in Sunnydale was Andrew and that was four years after she arrived there.

I don't think any of them hate her. Willow may come close, but hate is a pretty strong word... If any of them actually hated her, I doubt they would have even tolerated her, even for Xander's sake.

but hate is a pretty strong word...

Yeah, you're probably right but that's the word Xander uses in "The Yoko Factor" to describe how Willow and Buffy feel about Anya.

Yeah, you're probably right but that's the word Xander uses in "The Yoko Factor" to describe how Willow and Buffy feel about Anya.

Whether or not Xander says they hate Anya is irrelevant... He doesn't speak for the others. But at least even he is aware that none of them actually like her.

I would say that at the time of "The Yoko Factor" Willow or Buffy probably harboured few friendly feelings for Anya if any at all. But a lot happens between season 4 and season 7 and though Anya shallowly remains more or less the same she goes through a lot of changes during the years (as does the others obviously) that I think made them grew closer even if they hated her from the start. Again, I wouldn't call them friends, but there was a certain friendliness between them at the end.

🙂

I always thought Buffy and Anya seemed friendly at Buffys bday party in season 6 but it was like an akward kind of friendly, like when your trying to be friends with somebody that your around all the time. In season 7 when Xander tells Buffy she's about to kill one of her best friends, it dosent even sound right. Like Anya was one of her best friends? Really? So yea I guess they're friendly, I don't think they hate her but they're not the best of friends. I think Buffy wanted to be her friend (going to see her after Selfless, talking to her on her steps when she comes back after being left at the alter) they just never got that close.

No. They're not her friends. There is no reason that they should be. She has never attempted to gain their friendship, and she never showed any remorse for her murderous past. Even Riley, who wasn't with them for as long, had a closer thing with the Scoobies.

This is actually part of why I've always prefered the core characters on Angel: they were all very close. The Fang Gang had no loose knots. All of them were tight. 🙂

There's definately a grey area here. They are not close to Anya like they are the others, but they do for the most part treat her as a friend, even if only to her face. In "Him", Buffy goes out of her way to reach out to Anya, saying "I don't want my friends out there alone" or something to that effect. Yet later in the season, Anya makes it clear she doesn't consider herself Buffy's friend.

Anyway...

Something I have picked up on but I don't know if anyone else has noticed.

During Willow's rampage at the end of season 6, she hurts Anya a hell of a lot throughout the 3 episodes. She doesn't touch Xander until the very end and even then she only blasts him, she doesn't knock him unconscious or anything despite supposedly wanting him out of the way. But Anya, she has no qualms repeatedly knocking her out. Seriously, next time you watch these episodes, count just how many times Anya is on the receiving end of Willow's temper.
