Today I rewacthed TiMer, the Emma Caulfied (and Kai Rocha) film, for the first time in years. The film is fine, nothing amazing, but the premise of it, that we can all get these little clocks implanted in our wrists that will count down until the day we meet our soul mate, is much more interesting.

Here's the trailer of the film, it's on Netflix and worth watching if you haven't seen it.

In the film, they absolutely work and it is your soul mate that it matches you with, though you both need to be wearing a TiMER for a count down to begin.

Do you think it would make people more or less neurotic about love and relationships? Would you get one if they were available now?

I think that something like that would lead to a whole lot of sad, lonely people. The idea of waiting for your "soul mates," even if one does, in fact, exist for everyone, is totally unrealistic, if not downright foolish, and the odds against actually finding that special person would be on the order of winning the grand prize in the National Lottery 3 years running. There is one person in the population of the entire planet who is Mr or Miss Right for you, possibly living in your neighborhood, but just as likely to live in a different country on a different continent.

I can accept the fact that you can meet someone who shares all or most of your interests and beliefs, someone who you love and can happily spend the rest of your life with. That's wonderful. But you can also have that person die and then meet someone else who also shares those interests, who you can also love.

Soul mates are the subject of fantasy. In the real world, they simply don't exist.

Whether you believe in the concept of soul mates isn't really what I'm asking. In the TiMER universe they exist and the question is asked on that basis. Soul mates are real and this device allows you to find them, but only if they are wearing one too.

Okay, then, once more, without any explanation of why I believe this, I think that a situation like that would lead to a lot of sad, lonely people who spend their lives waiting for someone who odds are they quite likely won't ever meet.

Then again, anything's possible in the movies.

(And, pretty much off topic, if you've never seen "What Dreams May Come," it's a great movie about soul mates. Robin Williams is much, much more than just a stand up comedian)

I wouldn't as I have a girlfriend, two kids (with another on the way)... so what if it told me I hadn't met my soul mate, I'd be screwed 🙂

Yes, I would.

OK, so finding a soul mate is just not something I care about. If I ever meet them, that's fine I suppose, if I don't, that's OK too. To be honest, love? Not that important to me. But! If I have a soul mate then that means that there is another person out there to whom I am a soul mate. To that person meeting me might mean a difference between happiness and the lack of it, a happy, fulfilled life or a sad, unfulfilled one. Now, I don't expect my soul mate to be a person I find unattractive or whose personality I cannot stand 'cause that's not how this whole soul mate thing works, right? A soul mate is supposed to be cooler than anybody else after all. Right? So, if that person wishes to put up with me, fine. I'll do my best to make them happy. It's a good deal really, like joining bone marrow registry or something. I risk nothing but might make somebody happy. It's a good thing to do, you know, spreading happiness and all that.

nah, it sounds like a stupid idea to me.
Having people go around just waiting for the clock to tick down instead of living their life?

And what if it doesn't start to tick?
What are you supposed to do then?
Hope that your soul mate will get one eventually, if you actually have one, and avoid getting attached in the meantime? or just settled with someone who you like enough?

And if you do settle and the clock starts to tick?
Telling you that you will meet your soul mate in 3 years or so... are gonna break up and wait for 3 years then?

No, the whole thing sounds like a total nightmare to me.
I would probably vote for to getting it banned instead of getting one myself.

Also, I haven't seen the film but I guess that the clock doesn't actually makes you meet your soul mate.
I mean, you would meet him/her anyway. The clock only removes any doubts. And you'll know for sure that this is the one (whatever the one means).

Personally I don't think having doubts necessary needs to be a bad thing. I believe in not being certain about stuff. It makes you evaluate and think more. 🙂

I don't think I'd get one. I mean if soul mates truly exist and I meet my soul mate, I'd like to believe that I would not need a TiMER to tell me about it. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the TiMER doesn't actually help in any way other then tell you the time where you will meet that person right?

In that case, things play out the same either way pretty much, but I actually think that getting this thing might prevent you from meeting cool people. I mean, how often do you meet someone thinking they might be the one but it doesn't work out and you just end up great friends. Not knowing who that one person is in life is actually kind of a good thing, and when you meet them you just know, so a TiMER feels useless to me.
