Would You/Have You/Do You Dye Your Hair?

And if so, what colour?

I was thinking about hair dying. I have only ever had it done once, blonde streaks when I had it a bit longer and... well, let's say I am glad I dislike having my photo taken so there is no permanent evidence of the matter.

I am not sure if I would ever go for it again. Even though I was very blonde as a baby, it is not my favourite hair colour. Black, given my complexion, would make it look as if I was channelling my inner goth or emo. Brunette, well my hair is now a dark brown anyway. Maybe a lighter one? Red... going by the number of smart redheads on my fictional characters I find attractive list looks to be my favourite - on someone else.

The less natural colours I am not so sure on. Although I do wonder what a nice dark purple would be like... (probably awful!)

Have you dyed your hair? And what colours if you have? And how did it turn out?

two answers. Yes, I dye my hair... because it's light brown, and light brown graying hair is NOT silver-foxy, sexy grey, it's dingy, old man dirty-beard grey... and it's fugly. Add to this fact that the back third of my hair is its original shade with very little grey... and I pretty much have to dye my hair SOMETHING.

So I dye my hair to try to match the original colour of my hair... (which involves multiple shades of dye, as there's no such thing as caramel with dark caramel blond highlights... It was a colour I almost hated as a child, b/c being a black kid with caramel hair that turns blond in sun or pool during summer is a reason to be bullied and mocked, particularly, as I had an AFRO in the 1970s that was the colour of turbinado sugar and got told at 7, 8, 9 that I 'must be' dyeing my hair and that 'no black person has hair that colour.'

I came to love it as an adult when so many black women were dyeing their hair various blonde shades, none of which looked half as good as mine... 😎😎😁

As I got into fantasy, I kinda came to love the idea of having brilliant BLUE hair... blue, blue green, magenta, purple, blue, streaked with teal or green -- basically any colour(s) in which the colour blue exists is fair game... and my various online fantasy characters always have some variant of that... I think when my hair is finally somewhat uniformly grey, I will experiment with blues... until then, the amount of work involved in bleaching and then dyeing and maintaining... and the wear and tear on my very, very dry hair that tends to brittle... is not worth it... but I look forward to having a purple, blue, green, magenta curly do... someday...

I'm strawberry blonde. I've dyed my hair black and purple, and it was a mistake. I dyed it for the first time in 1999, and again in 2000. It was circa 2010 before my hair seemed normal and healthy again.

It messed up my hair for a decade, even after growing new hair, and my head hair was actually a different color (lighter) than the rest of my body hair (including brows) even after growing new hair for years. I don't know why it would mess up new hair (or why dark dye would cause new hair to show up lighter--and thinner, damaged--than my natural for years after), but it did.

In general I don't really care about my hair. It's brown. I cut it short, let it grow until it starts to annoy me, then cut it again.

I'm at the age where I might dye my hair a natural color to get it back to my younger shade, but I've never seriously considered it. One, I'm too cheap to get it professionally dyed, and the upkeep that would require. Two, I don't think I'd do a good job doing it myself.

I cant stand the smell of hair dye so I hope I get the good grey and don't have to dye it again. My hair is as dark as its ever been now, I think its last hurrah before losing colour.

The last time I dyed it was a dark mahogany type but with more of a purple hue than red, red would have looked better.

I think my hair is thicker than yours, so likely harder to damage. And waaaay shorter, so much less effort to dye! Although I did have mine done "professionally" so no effort. Though the more money I spend getting my hair done, the worse the end result it seems.

I like this purple

rather than such as lilac, which I think I described elsewhere as purple that needs to try harder. I am not sure how that would turn out as a hair colour though!

A friend had a disastrous experience with a blonde dye job that made her hair the colour and strength of straw. I saw it when they were still trying to fix it in the salon, and she said the look on my face told her everything she needed to know about it. It took some time to recover.

I think of the natural colours, the one I would be most tempted to get would be the darker auburns, that are essentially brunette with a touch of red.

My hair was shorter at the time, no chance I'd dye it at this length.
I mostly dyed it blonde, it was blonder when I was younger but started going darker as a teen so of course I dyed it!
Only once did I have it done in a salon and that was when I chopped it all off for charity and then had a load of highlights and lowlights put in.

I was platinum blonde in my late teens. So much upkeep. It didn't seem to damage my hair, the free drinks it got me did far more damage.
I was happy to let the blonde hair go, despite being a blonde child too. I thought it looked hideous on me. I only ever did it to fit into a group I didnt like much anyway.

I used to love coloring my hair, I think I've had pretty much every color - except for orange!
Blue was my favorite and it was very flattering as I'm pale and have blue eyes.

I stopped about ten years ago, because I'm lazy and because I tried to get used to the occasional grey strand that shows up.
I have naturally dark brown hair - auburn-ish I guess? I get very nice compliments on it still as it is dark brown with like reddish hues. That I've always hated by the way, because I used to bleach my hair those reddish hues were my worst enemy.

I still play with the idea of changing it again, so a part of me wants to go - do it!
But for me, I also remember the upkeep - the roots coming out, trying to keep the 'shine' to the new color... I don't know, as you hear, I'm lazy. But I do think that changing your hair color is an easy and fun way to change your look.

I may be the least likely to be a contributor to this thread, but the guy who got me onto the Latin dance circuit had been a hairdresser at his own salon then after retiring, he set himself up as a mobile hairdresser, getting a lot of business in hospitals for people who can't get out but can't stomach the idea of going to the great beyond looking like a sheepdog. At one point, I was over at his place and he was showing growing signs of irritation until he said, "I gotta do something about your hair." and gave it a trim and my first dye job. He had acquired 400 ampoules of dye at a closing out sale of another salon for a buck apiece, so it was no problem for him. He didn't charge for it and I ended up looking a good deal younger with uniformly brown hair rather than a combination of brown and grey that is my normal colour.

I had the option of doing it again but I like the grey. When I was very young, I had somewhat auburn hair, a gift from my Celtic mother.

Have you considered henna? It's far less damaging to hair than dye. Reshma 30 minute brand is AMAZING and I use it all the time. I highly recommend it!

Hair extensions can add highlights and are an easy fix for dark hair like mine!

I just looked up henna hair dye on Amazon and I had assumed that it would be, well, henna-coloured. But apparently you can get henna dye in different colours!

Originally, I had NO idea what I was doing. I hadn't a clue how messy the application process was. (Didn't read the directions!) But I soon learned to cover everything with a cheap shower curtain. Otherwise, the henna dyed my bathroom sink...permanently.

I started out with the violet colour, then deep auburn, and finally black...like my heart. 😅 I love henna! Its a great conditioner, definitely makes my hair shiny and healthy.

hmm, if i can get proper purple, i may try henna... dyeing hair is messy. I assume i need to remove anything that can get dyed. I put 'pee pads' on the floor to catch the (regular) dye.
