I'd never be selfish enough to call a kid Superman or similar, because that's exactly what it is: thinking about yourself instead of the child.

However I love "different" girls names (we named our daughter Elliana), so naming our next girl after a character on Buffy wouldn't be out of the question. Ellie was very nearly Lani or Kirralee.

I'm also right into breeding tropical fish (African cichlids and saltwater tropicals), so I actually took a lot of fish locality names from africa when we were picking unique girls names. Names like "Karalani" sound fine for girls, and they are also a location where specific fish are found in Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi.

I even took my username from Africa (Vis is "fish" in an African dialect).

I'm a big believer in "standard" names for boys though. A boy will cop a lot more at school for a strange name than a girl will I think.
