Would You Vote for an Atheist President?

The United States is founded on, among other things, the separation of Church and State, so I don't see where a person's religious beliefs, or lack of them, should be any sort of a deciding factor in his or her ability to serve as President.

I can't vote in the US (Obviously) but if I could then yes, I would vote for an atheist. But only if I agreed with his/her ethics and policies. To me the religion of a political candidate is nothing. I think there are wonderful, intelligent people in each and every religion that can have wonderful visions for the future.

(Except Scientology, that sucks)

The prime minister (at the moment, what with hung parliament and all) is an atheist and I think she, and her government are great and doing some wonderful things for Australia. Their views on 'boat people' put me off their government more then their religious beliefs.

I would vote for an atheist, sure. I don't care what a person's religious background is. I don't even care about political parties much. It's the individual (well, and the people they surround themselves with. Sarah Palin = Biggest Deal Breaker of all time) that I care about.

However, that's just not going to happen any time soon in this country... Man, ya'll should hear my family talk about religion and politics... *shudder*

I wouldn't vote for someone or not vote for someone based on their religion... however, it's sad but I feel I'm in the minority in this country....

Yeah, I just don't talk about it at all with family or friends. It just gets uncomfortable. Also hate it when anyone talks about those two subjects on a first date... or 2nd, 3rd, 4th... meh, just don't!

I don't know... I might sound really closed minded here... but for me, leaning left politically is kind of a pre-requisite for even a first date. I'm just so far left, I honestly don't understand how people can even lean right... I wouldn't bring up either topic on a first date, but I wouldn't go out with someone if I didn't know they at least leaned left

Religion doesn't matter much here (Sweden) and to be honest you probably have a bigger risk of scaring voters away if you push the religion card, as in being a believer, too hard. As for America I know it's a sensitive matter even if I never really understood why it's that important. It's about the person not the religion. Or the colour of the skin. Or which sex they are etc... But it must be much better to have an atheist that's open about it as president than someone that pretend to be someone they're not just to get people to vote for them right? Even if it of course can be difficult to know.

And we're not talking all religions are we? Would americans (in general) want someone that belonged to an other religion that christianity?

Unfortunately, I'd say it is extremely unlikely that many people would vote for somebody of the Islamic faith. A bunch of Americans still think that President Obama is Muslim and are outraged. *sigh* It's all just ridiculous.

I just laugh at people when they say that now... It's just too ridiculous to even respond to.

Actually, I voted for McCain because I thought that he was the best of two bad choises The last two years haven't changed my opion a bit.
If he or she was the most qualified for the job, or I felt like they had more positives than the other candidates, then I would have no problem voting for an Athiest president. Especially because I am Anthiese anyway. lol. I don't care if you're white, black, christian, athiest, man, woman, etc - as long as you don't lead America down a path that is completely destructive, i'm behind you. lol

Hearing the quote "we're on a mission from god" is fun in a Blues Brother movie. If the president say it and means it I wouldn't find it quite as fun anyomore... 😉
