I wouldn't have any real objection to Buffy and Spike marrying, though the legality of such a marriage might be suspect (basically a living person marrying someone who has been dead for over 100 years) but I don't see it happening any time soon, if ever. If Joss has taught us nothing else, he has taught us that, in the Buffyverse, no relationship, not Bangel, not Briley, not Twillow, no matter how popular or how "right" it might be, is permanent, and marriage, to me at least, should be as close to a permanent thing as may be attained in a human relationship.
Yes, and for Joss, marrying someone may be an opportunity to kill one of the two in a most permanent way. After all Wash was killed off... he was husband, not boyfriend. Tara was killed off AFTER everything was 'all better' and it was clear they were 'together forever'. It's as though happy ever after is the ticket you punch before you get YOUR ticket punched!
Maybe happiness is a death sentence in the Buffyverse?
- Giles got happy with his girlfriend Jenny. Angel kills her.
- Joyce goes on a nice date (first serious date she goes on, as i recall) then she's dead.
- Tara - dead after reconciliation.
- Cordelia - ascends (dies IMO) when she is going to meet Angel for happy ever after. We never see the real Cordy again. Angel's fate isn't exactly a happy one either, though it's not permanent.
- Wash - happily married... dead -- just when things are finally getting sorted out for everyone... 'save the world' and die.
- Fred starts to get involved with Wes, which seemed to be the idiot writers OTP. Fred dies.
Paperwork is easy enough to fake if you're a witch or the council. Heck, you could probably get the UK parliament to secretly issue paperwork for a hero vampire that got renewed every twenty years... as a reward from the PM/Queen for helping save the world. If they can create official-but-fake paperwork for MI6, they can create it for one non-aging hero vampire. I can't believe that W&H didn't create paperwork for vampires who lived like that first vampire businessman Angel defenestrated in AtS episode one.
