It actually made the UK papers. I don't have any thoughts beyond "I hope he's okay". It happens. My brother had his first heart attack at 32. It happened to Christian Erikson during Euro 2021 (football played with the feet) In some quarters, after Erikson, discussion degenerated to blaming the Covid vaccine. I'm saying nothing - except it's not unheard of. It happened to Fabrice Muamba in 2012 in a English domestic league match.

Yes I heard about this earlier this morning.

My mom was watching the game and she told me he basically just got up, sat there for a minute, and collapsed. Then the stadium went dead quiet to the point she thought she had the television muted.

Currently he’s in critical condition because of the cardiac arrest. Hopefully he pulls out okay. Sports can be so hard on a body

A very decent youngish England cricketer had a serious cardiac event the other year . Superfit little guy , he lived and stayed in cricket , but his playing career was over day 1 . He ended up with a defibrilator hard wired into him . Such a freaky thing for a young healthy dude to go through.

We also lost a top level Australia batsman to a ball hit to the back of the head a few years back . That honestly changed the way the sport was played for a long time , cut the hostile aggressive stuff waaaay back . At the end of the day : it's only a game .

Sports can be so hard on a body

From my understanding it was a freak accident that, if the hit occurred a millisecond sooner or later he would have been fine. I forget the condition they said it was but it made it seem like that was the underlying issue more so than anything else.

I dont follow American rugby so duno about this specific incident but as others have said, sudden heart problems are almost common in high level sport.

There is more in the news about it now days, athletes to whose hearts and bodies are giving out by their 30's. My dad was an Olympian and it wrecked his heart. I only ever got to state level sport in anything and still got afib issues.

Shane Warne (top aussie cricket player) died just a few months ago from a heart incident. Although many are arguing over that, if it was covid or the vaccine or his well publicized party and weight loss life. The truth is, high level sport is risky. Athletes used to face shame when they had health issues after sport but more are talking to media about it now.

Yeah, we were watching at work when it happened. Pretty crazy. I heard on the radio today he's in critical but stable condition.

Several years ago, there was a fad among teen boys to hit each other hard in the chest, to prove courage or something. This same thing happened to a few of them, and there were public warnings about it. Probably just made it more popular for a time, but it came to mind immediately when I heard about the Bills player.

So he may have had a perfectly healthy heart, just a freak thing. Still, the accumulation of injuries and studies of brain trauma in football lead me to conclude that the sport will be changing soon.

I remember after Eriksson in the Euros there was a renewed interest in having defibrillators put in, so hopefully this will encourage that again.
