Ryan Coogler director of Creed and Black Panther is in talks with, and has permission from, original show creator Chris Carter about doing an X-Files reboot. Plans are to update it and make it topical for a modern audience including a new diverse cast.

I am an X-Files fan, but I am not a big X-Files fan, that being said, I think that's a sorta iconic show that I can't imagine would do well being a reboot. What say you? Will there be a new X-Files reboot or will in be locked in developmental like the new Buffy reboot?

Here’s my thing.

The show had 11 seasons and 2 movies, which spanned 25 years of story and mythology. “Diverse” or not, 25 years of mythology is hard to build on—which is why the 11th season was panned by critics. It didn’t really push the story forward, and then the finale rewrote major plot points.

Instead of a “reboot,” go the Fringe route and make your own damn story. It doesn’t need to be branded as the “X-Files” to be about fringe science and the FBI. This whole tv cultural shift of rebooting things from 30 years ago is tired. Be original, Hollywood. Stop copping on franchise names to try to score an instant audience. Besides a handful of successes, it really doesn’t work.

Yeah, the 11th season was not good at all.

I don't think they would get an instant audience by naming their show X-Files. They might think that name has some cache but I reckon most X-Files fans would be turned off by a reboot and then you might lose some other potential fans just by the name X-Files, as for some it's sorta a joke.

And I mean the already did do a soft reboot with Whats-His-and-Her-Name and that didn't do anything to enliven the show.

If they want to reboot anything, reboot and update Millennium. I would fully support that.

Is Will Smith still acting? I just suddenly had an urge to see him play either the role of Mulder or Scully. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before a deep fake is made anyway.

I wonder how much longer fan made content will be allowed on platforms like YouTube?

I wonder, because so many fan made (even with cosplay and effects) are so superior (can even show more character development in 15 minutes than Disney can in 3 movies) to the official product made (with a lot more money and cast) by the exploiters owners to the rights of the series. Stupid fans. The supply doesn't get to make the demands.

For many X-Files fans that would simply be... a slap in the face.

I'll see my way out

It’s the “I’ll see my way out” for me 😂🤣

That would not be a slap in the face thing - unless Will Smith was using a 10lb lump hammer.
The idea of the X-Files returning is always better than the reality. It just keeps getting worse every time they bring it back.

It's beyond clear they didn't know what the hell they were doing with respect to the mythology of the show. If they bring it back at all they need to start completely fresh. New characters, new mythology, new universe.

Scully and Mulder are great characters but we've all seen enough of them.

Yeah, there isnt any more of x-files to do with mulder and scully but I can see an x-flies:new generation thing happening. Battlestar Galactica worked out well when that was rebooted, sometimes I have hope haha.

Sci fi shows dont get the chance they used to, or maybe there are so many with one or two seasons it just seems that way. If they start with a well known brand maybe increase the chance to get a full run? I just want to see a good show start to finish at this point. Its so unsatisfying when they are too short and/or dont finish.

Worked for Quantum Leap.

Yeah I was thinking that too but I have only seen the first few eps so far of the latest one.

Oh God, is that really a thing? Didn't they already do a short-lived X-Files revival?

I wouldn't mind seeing a new X-Files, since I think like The Twilight Zone, it's a winning formula that can be brought back in a new incarnation with new stories...although in the case of the X-Files, it's probably not as good of an idea seeing as it spawned about a million clones.

When it first came out, the skeptic/believer dichotomy where the tension was just as much intellectual as it was sexual was a unique and compelling character dynamic, but it's been shamelessly copied so many times since then I think "X-Files clone" is practically its own genre at this point, and not in a good way.

Hell even Angel, aka David Boreanaz was on one such X-Files inspired show, Bones, for many, many years. (They even allude to this in the pilot, which incidentally was the only episode I saw. It was not promising hence I saw no more.)

All that said, suppose you did bring back the X-Files. I would be down with it as long as they DO NOT RECAST MULDER AND SCULLY.

Which I have no doubt is exactly the plan, given studio executives' mindsets. But it would be a really terrible idea. Firstly, even on the X-Files during its original run, the Mulder/Scully dynamic had been getting old near the end. Season 6 and especially Season 7 were really not as good as previous seasons, and part of that was due to the characters really just having run their course. In Season 8 they introduced the character of John Dogget, played by Patrick Robert, aka the T-1000 from Terminator 2. This infusion of new blood really helped re-vitalize the show. The loss of a beloved main character (with Duchovny exiting as a main cast member) turned out to be one of the best things to happen to it. The character roles became reversed. Now Scully was the new Mulder, and Doggett was the new Scully.

They were even setting up Monica Reyes to be a replacement for Scully for when Gillian Anderson's contract would expire, but the ill-fated Season 9 proved to be the show's last. I would have been totally into new adventures with a sort of "X-Files: The Next Generation" with Doggett and Reyes.

But by the early 00s, especially once 9/11 happened, U.S. culture of skepticism towards government bureaucracy and fear of secret conspiracies seemed fairly trivial and of little significance when terrorists were toppling the Twin Towers in real life. The X-Files lost its relevancy and its ability to terrify audiences, plus the writing had major issues. The scripts were some of the worst that last season.

Over a decade on, they decide to bring back the X-Files for a limited series run, which was pretty much just X-Files: The High School Reunion. They didn't really impress me or even make average but decent tv. It was pretty much just nostalgia of seeing all the familiar faces return, although the "My Struggle" episodes were alright. I did like the attempt to modernize it a bit with the Alex Jones-inspired character, that was perfect to incorporate real life conspiracy theorists into this world. But ultimately, like I said, it was just a short-lived reunion, and that's fine.

I don't think we need more nostalgia, and these characters and their dynamic were done to death. The X-Files itself even feels like a very modern show, since it was actually one of the first if not the first to start the trend of longer serial arcs in tv shows, where some episodes were "monster of the week" and others dealt with the larger, on-going plot lines. They did a great job with the Blu-Rays too.

Long story short, we don't need to re-do the old X-Files.

But if a competent team with Chris Carter's blessings creates new characters who are just as compelling as the old, then sure bring back the X-Files. Make the X-Files: The Next Generation we might have gotten back then had the show not been cancelled. But please, for the love of god, do not recast Mulder and Scully and then just do the same horse that's been beaten to death already.

A rebooted/ new series based on the X-Files might work if the notion of ' The Truth Is Out There ' is used for a series about UFO's or Alien activity only.
The days of Mulder and Scully should be preserved for posterity. The smoking man should be put to rest in a vat of concrete.
And hopefully the reboot will not be similar the to crap put out by Ancient Aliens or the (how many repeats can I do in an hour) History Channel.

Another reboot. Sigh.

Does this even need to be said anymore: "and make it topical for a modern audience including a new diverse cast" - isn't that usually the whole point of a reboot?

I never got hooked on X-files, I have seen episodes I like but I've not seen the majority of the show. So I don't feel passionately either way, except for feeling passionately exhausted by rebooted titles.

LOL. I never really thought about that but yeah, I guess so.

"New, diverse cast" as if the original's merit is tarnished because of "lack of diversity". Yes, one could say there was a diversity issue on Buffy, and I've made a thread about that in the past. But that doesn't mean that Buffy wasn't "topical". It was clearly very topical. It's still topical today.

Another reboot. Sigh.

I agree with you, I am about rebooted out at this point. Make original titles. Also, not everything has to be based on books, either. I love the new show "Will Trent," but finding out it was based on a book.. it took some of the glam away for me. There are so many creatives out there with fresh spins on topics/themes/plots that have been created before. Let these creatives have their day.

Not sure how I feel about this? If it's done well, it could be good.
The original is so iconic. Kind of hard to replicate. 😳

I wouldn’t mind another show like the x-files.
Rather take a chance on that kind of show than a new reality show or whatever.

Don’t really care if they do it as a reboot or just something similar.
It will be compared with x-files anyway and can be good or bad either way.

I think if X-Files could be done with longer story arcs now, that might be interesting. But I agree that there have now been many other similar shows. Plus with all the supernatural shows there have been, will we ever be on Scully's skeptical side anymore?👽

I think there are plenty of ways to make the X-files better; like maybe thinking out 'the conspiracy' before hand and slowly revealing/uncovering the truth through a series of gripping story-arcs, inter-cut with coverts actions from 'the cover-up' and what they're trying to achieve. Unlike the way they half-assed a lot of it to begin with, with many 'the truth is finally revealed in this exclusive VHS...' revealing nothing of the sort, and in the end not a lot of it made much sense.

Also, another thing that bugged me about the X-Files is that nearly everything turned out to be true; aliens, magic, Satan, psychic powers, mutants, cryptids, etc.
'quick, we need to stop these Greys, lets use the power of Voodoo to our advantage...'

It probably would've been more coherent to have most of the weirdness come from the same source; yes, there are aliens, they've been here a while, so as a result some government and industry groups got involved in genetic experiments/weird technology, which led to mutations/psychic powers, and so it goes.

Or have 1 conspiracy be uncovered over the course of a few episodes and then introduce a completely different one with different membership, goals, tactics and 'truth' right at the heart of it. The first could be 'aliens' deep within government institutions, the second could be demonologists within an old boys network of corporations, etc.

Actually, I'd rather then rebooted Dark Skies or Millennium because they still have fresh stories to tell. (also they were just way better written)
