Xander and Anya-were they heading towards a reconciliation?

Hi buffy-boarders...

Towards the end of Season 7, it's my opinion that Xander and Anya were heading towards a reconciliation and if it weren't for Anya's death, I feel they would have gotten back together. Despite them saying that they were really over when they had their way with one another on the cot in Buffy's basement, we see them making out after that on Buffy's kitchen floor after Xander's eye incident, if memory serves correct. Anya was still fixated and in love with Xander, and vice versa for Xander, as well. I personally loved Anya, and thought it was a stupid idea to kill her off. Lots of stupid ideas floating around in Season 7, now that we're on the subject.
What do you think?
 
They had progressed past the "I want to use my demon powers to slowly roast you over a low flame," to what could be described as a "friends with benefits" stage, so a complete reconciliation would seem to have been likely, if not definite,
 
I definitely feel like they were heading in that direction. They were at least back to being friends again, so I feel like if Anya hadn't died, Xander and Anya might have ended up back together.
