I have been hearing some Buffy fans joke about the idea of Xander and Spike being a romantic pair probably because of the time they were roommates in Xander's basement. But seriously, I want to ask you guys if you think these two would have worked as a couple? If yes, what kind of couple do you see them as?

No, they wouldnt have worked because Xander is not gay, neither is Spike (besides that one time with Angel that basically we don't know if it was just a kiss or something more)

I'm surprised sosa lola hasn't appeared yet to stick up for this ship!

I'm a big believer in the spander ship, in fact it's probably the most popular slashed ship from Buffy / Angel.

It wasn't something that I necessarily agreed with at first, but after reading some excellent fanfic I can see it. For sure. A sweet and loving relationship.

Here she is!!!! 😀

They'd totally work. Despite their differences, they have so much in common!

1) They were both outcasts.
2) They were both insecure.
3) They hide behind shields.
4) They get along better with women than men.
5) They tell it as it is.
6) They're cheerleaders of freewill.
7) They had unrequited love for Buffy.
8) They don't take rejection well.
9) Buffy falls in love with them after they change.
10) Both of them don't believe Buffy when she declares her love.
11) Their reasons for disliking Angel are about women.

I don't think it would work. Not that they could be a healthy couple anyway, but a less perfect couple, sure.

I keep seeing Spike take advantage of Xander, like he did with Buffy, making Xander feel dirty and hate himself, when Spike got tired of the "good guy" act. True, Buffy was in a dark place, being suicidal and depressed, but at least she could punch back.

If Xander loved Spike back, there might be no need for Spike to try to "mold" Xander, the way he tried Buffy. But I keep imagining the bathroom scene. People can be raped without there being physical pain involved, and like I said, Xander can't punch back the same way.

I'm not saying that these worse case senarios would have happened on the show, but I don't think any writer could have realisticly have written Spike & Xander in a relationship without showing Spike's darker side. Which makes me hope that Xander, who hopefully respects himself and Spike's past victims enough, would say "No, this isn't working, I need to leave you".

I could be wrong, but I both don't want any "good" character to be with a soulless killer, or believe they should be able to. So in the long run, it couldn't have worked, unless Spike got a soul, or went through the same thing Anya did in Selfless, which I don't think he could. He was just a different kind of evil.

I have been wrong in the past though, so maybe they could have worked as a healthy couple. I just seriously doubt it.

That being said, I love reading fanfics with these two. Both dark ones and fluffy ones, realistic or unrealistic.

Wow, can you please write a Spander fic with these dark scenarios? I'd LOVE to see that on screen. Have you read Sweet Revenge by Jackson? It's quite similar to what you wrote and that what makes it a compelling story.

I'd have loved to see something that would start in the dark abusive way you mentioned -with Spike treating Xander like he'd treated Harmony - until Xander realizes that he won't take Spike's shit anymore and dumps him, that's when Spike realizes that he does have feelings for Xander and somehow everything he used to mock about him becomes appealing. I agree that it can only work once Spike got himself a soul, but the journey toward that is the most interesting thing about Xander/Spike.

I LOVE Spander! And I think they would make a great couple once they stop fighting. But to be honest, I think they fight so often BECAUSE they see common in each other.

I haven't read that fic, but I used to love dark fics like that. And the kind of plot you describe was one of my favorite scenarios.

It was so hard to find realistic ones though. Either it was too dark without any hope(which could be fun in shorter fics or if it was simply a dirt story) or the character's personalities were changed to fit the plot, through making the bad character too good or the good character too bad. I wish I had the patience or talent or simply the time to try to write something like that.

I do wonder if I would like to see something like that on TV though, or if I could just take it in fanfics. I mean, I like this happening with Spike and other characters, but seeing Spuffy just didn't work for me, even though I've read darker fics. Weird.

I think they definitely have stuff in common. They could probably be good friends or best friends, but romantically involved? I just can't see it.

Sweet Revenge is a classic. One of the first fics I've ever read of Spander. And as I've become too picky of the fics I read, it's one of the few that I can say is true to canon as Spike and Xander, especially Spike, are very close to their TV characters. If you want a link, I can PM you.

Yeah, sometimes I imagine if Spander was the canon ship instead of Spuffy and I wonder if I'd have loved it as much as I do in fanfic.

I'm reading it right now. I like the plot so far, but Spike is a bit too nice(I don't believe he would never rape anyone) and sometimes the writing is hasty, but I'm liking it otherwise.

Could you send me a link? I been striking out on finding good Spander lately.
I love Spander, absolutely it would work.

One of my favorite scenes between Spike and Xander is when Xander lights Spike's cigarette in Spiral. I'm sure they signalled each other with they eyes.

Sosa, great list!

I so agree!! Their snark is so sexy. I love when their faces were so close to each other in Doomed as they stared right into each other's eyes before Xander stormed out. Sexual tension!!!

Thank you!

Aw, I love when they smiled at each other after Xander lit his cigarette.

Another favorite moment would be in Doomed when Xander jumped to save Spike from the collapsing library.

I think they would work togehter if someone is in danger as they did when Buffy was caught inside two realitys but normaly they hate each other. In fact I think Xander hates him much more because he saw Spike and Buffy sleeping togehter. Even when Buffy was a robot at that time he had to felt hurt, because in season 1 and 2 he was also in love with her just didn't he get her. To see that spike does what he dreamed to do, had to be hard for him!!!

I'm really not a fan of the idea of them as a couple. I loved their interactions on the tv show but thats about as far as I go with the Xander and Spike love.
