I heard that Joss Whedon had an idea about making Xander gay. Could that worked on the show? Like, let's say, in Season 4, Xander develops a crush on Buffy's boyfriend Riley that shocks him and makes him think about his current relationship with Anya and all his previous relationships with women. Would that have been good for the character development of Xander or something bound to go wrong?

I heard that Joss had plans to make either Willow or Xander gay, and there's plenty of hints early on in the seasons at both of their gayness, for lack of a better word lol. 😀 Then, following Seth Green's departure and Willow's chemistry with Tara (who wasn't even written to be a romantic love interest at first!), it made more sense to have Willow be the gay one.

Y'know, I would've actually loved to have Xander be gay. I love Willow and Tara and I love how Willow realizing she was gay was handled, but I definitely think it could've worked for Xander too. And sometimes he seems much more bisexual than straight to me, if not gay. I think he's definitely attracted to men, and it would've been great to see that explored. That and Joss still hasn't delivered on having an openly gay male character...we see characters or storylines about being gay (as a man) always played for laughs or just implied, and that kinda stinks that he hasn't allowed characters/situations to become more than that. He certainly has the opportunity. 😛

Then Buffy, Wilow, and Xander would all have had experiance with the same sex. 😀

You may want to put that first lil bit in some spoiler tags because not everyone knows that. It does not sit well with me, ah at those comics!!!
Honestly, it would have been more believable to me than Willow turning gay.

As with whom he would have dated, perhaps Larry would not have died on graduation day. Larry becomes a Scoobie and Xander's date: I could see the potential.

I love Xanya too much to see Xander being gay... He always seemed like a guy that was just secure in his masculinity enough to be cool with hanging around mostly girls

I can picture Spander happening in S4 so easily. Xander will also have to deal with lusting after a vampire, being in Buffy's shoes, Buffy can call him on it and tease him endlessly. 😀

Or... or... Xander is so ashamed he hides it from his friends, and Spike being the evil vamp he is, drops hints here and there making Xander squirm. It would have been so much fun!

Maybe have Xander threaten Spike with spanking, in which Spike replies that he'll spank him first, then Xander will say, "All right, I just don't want you to get a headache." He smirks. "Bugger. The chip! Won't let me have fun!"

Aww, Spander!

Aww, Spander!

I was wondering how long it would take you to reply!

Personally I think Spander would have given Xander so much more 'like-ability' and I would have felt a lot more empathy for his character. Do I believe Xander was outwardly 'gay'? No. I do believe that his character should have been a little bit more experimental and I would have liked to see him feel feelings that had a few more shades of grey.

There was so much sexual tension between the two of them in so many scenes that I feel like it wouldn't have been an awkward jump from the relationship that they already had.

I don't know if it is because I have read so much convincing Spander fanfic as well, but it just... works for me. Equally as a crush, as a fling, as a lifelong thing.

Disclaimer: I am still primarily a Spangel.

Love the banner.
Xander and Spike, mmmmm. They should of just had a lil fang even from a spell, haha.
I'm happy with the way things turned out with Willow being gay.

.... even in a parallel universe where both Spike and Xander are gay, why in the world would Spike be attracted to Xander or vice versa??? That is one of the least plausible pairings I have ever seen.

It is canon that Xander thinks Spike is hot. Perhaps it can be a one sided lust. God, I wanna read that fic. Xander's body betraying him by lusting after Spike and Spike is taking advantage of that fact to hurt Xander and show him in so many ways how unworthy and unattractive he is. Or openly reveals how much he loves Buffy just to watch the flicker of hurt on Xander's face. Oh... fic ideas!!!!

I love that we disagree on so many aspects of Xanders personality but both agree on this!
I think there were more hints at Xander being gay than Willow being gay in the earlier seasons, definitely concrete ones. So it would've given Xander something to do and explore from season 4 on ward because he basically had nothing. I don't even know how the "seer" thing came into freaking play because it was never discussed till Caleb ripped his eye out.

He should've at least gotten some powers or something. Nothing huge, just small ones.

What if it started like this?

In Season 4, Xander feels lost and depressed with his life post-high school. He's not getting what he needs from his relationship with Anya. He isn't quite sure what it is until one night, he and Spike get into a heated argument which leads to them having unexpected sex in his parents' basement. Xander is disgusted with himself for what he did but finds himself yearning for that kind of connection with Spike because it made him feel something different, something more than what he has been feeling before it happened. Spike agrees to having a sexual relationship with Xander so he can use it to as a form of revenge aganist Buffy and the Scoobies by humiliating Xander, showing him how he's no different than a common demon. But as their fling goes on, Spike finds himself developing actual feelings for Xander and becomes very protective of him. Xander keeps his relationship with Spike a secret from his friends until it is exposed in the Yoko Factor.

That is EXACTLY what should have happened. You like Wesley and think like me - I like you.

Of course, I'm happy that Joss decided not to let Xander go gay, but I can definitely see it. Xander and Spike had some serious chemistry in Season 4, and it would have been really interesting to see Xander exploring that. That being said, I'm still glad it didn't happen. LOL

Looks like the writers seriously dropped the ball here: 😛

I freaking LOVE these videos!! Imagine Spander happening in conon. I'd have died, so freaking interesting and sexy! And Xander wouldn't have been written as a background character after S3. Sigh.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was like Uh?! Then, soon after I read that Joss Whedon seriously considered this possibility, there was surprise followed by denial.
Now after seeing these two videos, I'm more like How the heck I'd never thought of that before?!?!?
