Xander in the early seasons

So I was just watched a lot of the early seasons, and I realized how much I hate Xander in these! Sometimes hes funny and all, but his jealousy for Buffy really makes me mad. In the end of s2/ beginning 3 is the worst. When Angel goes evil and hes got that whole "I told you so" attitude. He really rips into Buffy alot and doesn't know when to stop. And when she's all emotional. He's a real jerk! I was just wondering what your opinions are on Xander. I liked him a lot better later on. Probably after he got Anya and wasn't totally obsessed w/ Buffy.
 
Don't forget that in "Becoming, Part II" he didn't even bother to tell Buffy that Willow was doing the curse to restore Angel's soul, instead saying that Willow said for Buffy to "kick his (Angel's) ass". This remained a secret until Season Seven's "Selfless."
 
Xander did the right thing in Becomming, Part II

I really like that Xander didn't tell Buffy about the spell to restore Angel's soul in the season 2 finale. Actually, more than that, I think it was a pretty critical moment for Xander's character. I think Xander's actions were about more than being jealous of Angel's relationship with Buffy.
Xander (and, to be fair, Giles as well) knows that even with his soul restored, Angel is a huge risk to the group. Restoring his soul once isn't a guarantee that he won't lose it again, and it drives Xander nuts that everybody KNOWS this but they all skirt around the issue because Buffy is in love with Angel. This was Xander making a decision he believed absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the people he loves.
 
Very good point, LazyDolphin. I would never go so far as to say I hated Xander at any point in time during the series, infact I think the Xander of Seasons 1-3 is the Xander I liked most.
 
Xander did tend to piss me off in the earlier seasons. I had completely forgotton about not liking Xander until I bought a book called "Bite Me". It was an unnoficial guide for the first 6 seasons of Buffy. It had a complete episode guide and as I was reading through season 2 and 3, I kept getting more and more angry with Xander😛. He was a real prick when he was a teenager. I mean, in season 3's "Dead Man's Party" I was so pissed at him for yelling at Buffy. He had no idea what she had been through. She ran away for the summer because she was seriously hurt and depressed. He had no right to yell at her. Plus, the whole Xander and Angel thing really bothered me. Xander needs to understand that you cant change the way you feel about someone!


I think my rant is over. Good thing Xander smartened up!
 
i agree that xander was very self centred in the early days. i mean buffy was going thru major pain and all he could say was 'now look what youve done'

Yeah, he was a little stupid when it came to the whole Buffy/Angel thing. I agree that he pissed me off then too. As for the not telling Buffy about Willow restoring the soul deal, I'm not totally sure what HIS reasons truely were but I think it's better that he said nothing for the sake that if Buffy hesitated to buy Willow time it could have been the death of her and Giles and the entire world. I like to think Xander figured the same thing.
 
yeah, he was kinda selfiish and jelous in the earlier episodes but i wouldn't go as far as to say that i hated him. He was funny and all....

I totally agree that was really harsh of him, but i've always liked Xander, just think about how much he's made up for being such an idiot in the early days.
 
^like his speech about Buffy in the end of s7 to all the potentials. That was nice. I liked him then. The one where buffy and faith walk in in the middle, then Faith's like "dam, I never knew you were that cool." 🙂
 
I really hated Xander back then aswell. He needed to get over Buffy, and realise, he was her friend, not her dad!
 
Dont you think if Buffy did know about willow restoring angels soul, that she woul dhave somehow stopped it???That just seems like a thing Buffy would do...It would be wrong to mess with something like that...I dunno...But she is a slayer, she looks twice at everything.thats why i think shes stop it
 
I liked Xander. I just didnt like it how he hated Angel soo much and how he also hated when they was together and I *realli* hated him in Becoming Pt2, if Buffy would of known, she and Angel still miight be together....God Damn You Xander!!!!!!
 
I think Xander was really harsh when it came to Buffy and Angel's relationship, but I guess he was just acting like a normal jealous teenager.
 
I personally like Xander better in the early seasons, compared to seasons 6 and 7 (he's much more serious now and doesn't tell jokes anymore). But yeah I was hoping he'd tell Buffy about Angel's soul like Willow told him to. But think about it - if he did, and she might've been able to stop it, the ending wouldn't be as... touching and amazing (even though it was sad). The whole season 3 would be different then, cause Angel wouldn't have been sent to hell.
 
I like Xander... i think he's great, and even though the people of Sunnydale can't see it, i think he's a great guy who is semi cool🙂

And he's funny!!
I also like Xander in s4... even though his life has changed aot since s3!
