Xander & Willow

No way Xander would have done the spell to get Angel's soul back, that was pretty powerful magic. And not sure it takes too much specialized power to make a wooden stake fly through the air and dust Spike. Willow wasn't inclined that way, I think Xander would have done it in a heartbeat...soon as he found out he could make either a pencil OR a rose fly Spike would have been a dead vampire

Spike has quick enough reflexes to catch a stake that is flying at him.

Spike has to sleep sometime. And when that happens, Xander "will have himself a real good day". Spike would wake up on fire, just as Dawn threatened in Season 7. Also, Spike can stop a stake aimed at his front. He wouldn't see the one coming at him from the rear.
 
I think Buffy would have to put Xander in his place. Or maybe even kill him. I don't think he would be responsible with magic unless something catastrophic happened. I just don't think he would be able to handle magic
 
@cryptwarmer not being gay or male that's a tough question for me to answer. Knowing what I do about human nature my guess there is probably several different camps on that.....spangel, spander, gander, Spiles, wangle but also all the regular ships too 🙂 equal opportunity shipping for all!

Spike does sleep in Hush. Xander doesn't kill him. I don't think Xander would kill him unless Spike did domething really bad and personal like sleeping with Anya or attempting to rape Buffy.

I think Xander will end up doing the spell if Willow told him to. He always ends up doing something he dislikes like taking Spike in a couple of times if someone told to. Not to mention that he did help save Angel's life in Amends and Graduation and What's My Line, no magic and all.

He's not really that one note character. He does come around and help when he sees that his friends really need it.
 
Ignoring the silliness coming over me, I'll instead ask, wasn't witchcraft part of Joss's feminist subversion of tropes? (That is, witchcraft was essentially "woman power," and even the few male warlocks, no matter how old and experienced, weren't up to the level of even a kid like Amy or Willow.) I can't recall for sure now. If so, then that pretty much excludes Xander (at least until season 6 when so much, including witchcraft, is retconned and the subversive tropes become replaced by the usual formulas).

That's an interesting way of looking at it... Because witchcraft was actually introduced to 'Buffy' in the "usual" witchcraft-is-dangerous way - Giles had a bad past of experimenting with magic (Yep, just like drugs - "it was an incredible high"), and we see Amy and Xander abusing magic in 2x16, and when Willow starts using witchcraft in 'Becoming', it's definitely presented as dangerous ("It could open a door you may not be able to close"). Even as late as season 4 - we see Willow being constantly warned by people not to go too deep into magic, and she almost uses magic in an evil way to get revenge on Oz and Varuca in 'Wild at Heart', and when she tries to use magic in a big way in 'Something Blue', it backfires spectacularly.

Magic only became positive when Tara was introduced, and that change was mostly because of behind-the-scenes motivations - the network didn't allow Joss to show blatant homosexuality, so he used magic as a metaphor instead. And once that censorship went away, in season 6, Joss simply went back to the original conception of magic as being dangerous.

I think that Joss always meant to show magic in a pretty grey way - he wasn't going "burn the witches!" (err, and when he did, he presented that as bad), he was just using magic as an exploration of power and rebellion - both the good aspects of power and rebellion, and the bad aspects. Which is why we see Willow's hair going dark in season 6 because of magic, and going bright in season 7 because of magic - it's a (very obvious) way of saying that the problem isn't magic, but how you use it.

I agree with you . Xander was never one for studying a lot . And we know that what Willow did . I see Xander takeinf shortcuts & ending up hurting himself & others .
Just look at what he made Amy do when Cordy broke up with him .

Not to mention he would have been a teenage boy who could use magic. If i had that kind if power when i was a teenager...that episode where all the girls wanted Xander...all day every day. I have no doubt in my mind he would end up getting himself killed, and that's not including serious stuff like exploding his own head trying to re-ensoul Angel or something.
 
How much would you want to bet he do something like Giles did & end up possessed by some demon or spirt 🙄
 
I doubt all those things will happen to Xander in the high school years. Remember Willow was able to float a pencil by the end of S3, didn't discover her knack for magic until S3 after she did the ensouling spell in Becoming.

Xander wouldn't be so competent in using magic until probably S4 and then he will meet Tara and she will help him gain control over it.
 
So your saying Xander would wait that long ? I don't think so myself . And Willow was busy with her computers & schoolwork . And we all know Xander wasn't good at either .

What I'm saying is, he wouldn't know he had that power until something big comes and he had to use magic. That could be when Amy was doing the love spell for him, she'd sense he has power. She could tell him after BB&B when Xander swore off love spells - remember when he got upset with Willow trying the delusting spell? He'll be hesitant about using magic because he's afraid what happened in BB&B will happen again.
