Does anyone else think xander acts a bit too tough towards spike and think he wouldn't act that way if spike was able to defend himself????

I actually think Xander was friendlier with Spike than he was with Angel, and Spike didn't even have a soul. So considering, I don't think Xander was too harsh. Also, his hate for Spike was completely justified, whereas his hate for Angel was mostly jealousy (not talking about Angelus). All in all, I love Spike, but Xander had every right to hate him if he wanted too. And to be honest, I think Xander and Spike actually have some very nice moments and I think they have good chemistry.

Also, if Spike was able to defend himself, I don't think they'd let him be a part of the gang, and they would probably already have staked him. You can bet that if Spike laid one hand on Xander, Buffy would destroy him.

I agree with the points you made but I was talking about something much simpler I wanted to know if you thought that xander would take the liberties like punching spike if the chip was not in regardless of what would be likely to happen after I mean I think that knowing spike can't hit back made xander a little braver

If there was no chip then Spike wouldn't be around to punch, so it's a moot point. The only reason they tolerate Spike is because he's supposedly 'helpless' and they feel bad for killing someone who can't defend himself. At least, that's how Xander feels.

I don't see why Xander should have to change his behavior just because Spike can't fight back. Xander has plenty of good, solid reasons to feel the way he does about Spike, to hate him and, yes, even punch him if he feels the need. Xander is human and he has emotions that sometimes get out of control.

And that's the thing about Xander - I don't think the chip makes much of a difference. If the chip wasn't an issue and Spike did what he did, I think Xander would punch him anyway. Yes, Xander might suddenly find himself a live blood donor, but he'd till do it, because that's just the kind of person Xander is.

I'll agree with Lyri. I don't think Xander would refrain from hitting Spike with or without the chip. Xander has been around vampires long enough not to fear them like a regular Jo would.

see the whole moot point thing is not what I asked I was being hypothetical and lyri thanks for your opinion and maybe xander would have done that once but he would then in turn get knocked across the room so it would be diff after that hypothetically speaking of course they still keep him around

Xander acted pretty damn tough against Angelus in S2. I don't think he'd hesitate to hit Spike. He's lose, yeah, but he'd still do it.

This.

Xander doesn't care that Spike is a vampire or not, if he wants to punch the guy, stand up to the guy, he's going to do, chip or no chip. He stood up to Angelus - and came out on top. He faced down Drusilla and is still standing. He defeated Dark!Willow all by himself.

Xander has guts...a lot of them. He's proved that time and time and time again. His attitude towards Spike has absolutely nothing to do with the chip and everything to do with the kind of person Spike is and what he's done to Xander and his friends over the years. And, in my opinion, his attitude is completely justified.
