Xander's approval of Riley

It's easy to say that Xander did not approve of Angel because he was a vampire, but let's not forget that he never liked him when he thought he was human. He just "didnt like him more" when he found out he was all grr-argh

Xander didn't like Angel because Xander had a crush on Buffy and she chose Angel over him, it was jealousy mingled with who Angel was and then mingled with Angel becoming Angelus and so on.

But when Riley came to the picture, Xander was already over Buffy and he saw Riley as a nice, stand up guy, someone good for Buffy.

Riley Finn didn't have a change of heart in season 5 so much as a change of character. By my estimation, the BTVS writers had already decided that they wanted Buffy and Spike together, and set about sabotaging the Buffy/Riley arc. All of a sudden, commando boy is insecure with Buffy's slayer prowess, when he wasn't before. All of a sudden her strength makes him less of a man. All of a sudden he's a junkie. All of a sudden he's insecure about her love for him. And all of a sudden, Spike is in love with Buffy. My theory is Marsters' and Gellar's chemistry during "Something Blue" was so great that the writers decided they wanted that to actually happen (with more angst, of course).

To answer the original question, Xander's approval of Riley stems from his own acceptance that he and Buffy are practically brother and sister in "Restless", and Riley's human-not-a-vampire status. And the 'Nick Fury' job Riley has doesn't hurt, since that's Xander's favorite comic book hero (especially once he gets the eye patch).

We don´t really like Riley, but he is the esterotype of perfect boyfriend... Buffy wouldnt be happy with him ´cause she does like them bad, but, Riley was that boyfriend who does everything for you, takes care and all.

Anyone would like a bf like this to his friend.

Okay... Riley's acting out wasn't about addiction. It was about Riley's feelings of inadequacy. He said it himself: those women needed something from him (his blood) and were willing to give him a bit of a thrill in return. The important factor here was that Riley needed to be needed. But Buffy didn't need Riley. Instead of leaning on him when Joyce was sick or whenever there was any sort of trouble, she was brave and stoic. It didn't help that vamps like Angel (Forever) and Spike (Fool for Love) kept being there to pick up the pieces for her when she shut Riley out or when vamps like Angel and Dracula could put a mark on Buffy that Riley couldn't equal, either. It wasn't coincidence that Riley's whores were vamp whores instead of regular human ones. They were as close as Riley could get to Buffy's weird vamp thing. I think Riley was not only trying to feel needed, but also trying to get in touch with the side of Buffy that she didn't want to show him. This was waaaaay more emotionally complicated than addiction. Any rush Riley got out of it was secondary to the calming effect of being able to act on his negative emotions without unloading on Buffy during such an inappropriate time. Honestly, I think he was trying to protect her feelings by handling his feelings on his own rather than by laying all of his baggage on her when things were so rough.

I don't think Riley's so-called addiction made him dangerous or a bad guy. In the end, Buffy didn't, either. She obviously ran to at least attempt a reconciliation. I think what upset Buffy was the fact that she had to face her own conduct toward him -- and she didn't like what she saw. I also think she felt cheated on and cheapened, as would most women. Obviously, Riley's lust for the dark side probably made her face that part of her at least a little bit, too, and dislike it. I think Buffy felt betrayed by Riley's fall from grace at least in part because it was her own fall, too. She couldn't just be distant and pretend everything was all sunshiney and nice in the black-and-white world of their seemingly solid, stable relationship. I think it threw her that she had to work for this relationship, too, and that everything didn't just fall into place.

All of this considered, why wouldn't Xander encourage them to work things out? The problems were complex, but the solution was fairly simple. It involved Buffy crying on Riley's shoulder once in awhile and letting him into the inner-sanctum of her psyche and her core group of family/friends (as well as distancing herself from the bitey vamp boys). Given the situation, I don't think Riley's actions were unjustifiable or particularly difficult to understand. In time, I'm sure Buffy could have (and would have) forgiven him. Really, getting bitten by a few vamps isn't the stuff of apocalypses -- or anything Buffy hasn't done, herself. I don't think Xander, who can still love Willow even when she's trying to destroy the world, is one to turn his back on someone just for getting a little fang action. After all, if that were the case, he would have turned his back on Buffy long ago.

Brilliant post, and as much as Xander and Riley got along, I always wondered why he didn't push for them to "kiss and make up", too. I really lived Briley, and wish they could have lasted at least a little bit longer. I loved seeing Buffy with a (semi) normal guy. It was good for the character, but I think we all knew ultimately it would never work out.

I think that Xander was sooooooooooooo happy it wasnt Angel that it could have been anyone. Plus he was all kinds of involved with his own stuff via Anya. I think Riley was easy to accept for Xander after the whole Angel saga.....

Which is understandable seeing how Riley gave us who he was for Buffy and was sweet and nice with her friends.

Don't get me wrong, I love Xander, it's Xander, how could you not. But he has a crush on Buffy. It's not as previlant as it was in season 1 and 2, but she'll always be the unatianable woman to him. He hated the other guys because he was jelous. But Riley is like Action Hero Xander, the "nice guy". He can put himself in Riley's shoes a lot easier. He thinks Buffy should be with Riley because Riley is the closest thing to him.

I just think Xander got the fact that it was an even relationship, Riley never expected to much from buffy, he just loved her, and wanted to spend time with her. He had her back, and wanted her to be happy.
I loved the first 3 seasons of Buffy, but god that was a pretty one sided relationship. What Buffy got from it i'll never know. Guess that's young love for you. Angel, was always all give me love and watch me brood, because i've had a tough life. Even after he went psycho and came back, she did all the work in the relationship.
Maybe Riley was right, maybe she just liked strong guys. Cos' lets face it, angel was hardly the 'after' life of the party, and their sizzling sex life wasn't keeping her there. In my opinion Riley tried to hard to be like angel, buffy just didn't have the sense to understand that's the last thing she needed. And in many ways treated Riley the way, Angel treated her. Give me love and watch me brood, because i've had a tough life.
Oh god, i think i've just pissed of every angel/buffy fan out there. Scared now.

Wow, very insightful post... LMAO@'their sizzling sex life'! I think you've definitely hit the nail right on the head with this one. I never really thought about Buffy and Angel's relationship being one-sided, because Angel did love Buffy, but I do see that Buffy was the one who made all the effort. Especially after he came back all crazy from being in Hell...
I really agree that Riley tried so hard to be everything Buffy wanted, and it was just never good enough. He wasn't dark enough for her, and in reality she saw a little too late that dark wasn't what she needed.

I respectfully disagree with this logic, heard it many times, still doesn't make sense at all. Is it so hard to believe that Xander thinks Riley is so good for Buffy? Why must there be a twist just to point out that Xander still has feelings for Buffy? I think he started to move on ever since S3, he didn't mind Buffy dating humans at all: Scott Hope, Riley, Richard, Wood... it's vampires he seems to dislike. Even so, he learned to accept Buffy being in love with Angel in S3, hence him trying to help them out in Amends, The Zeppo and Graduation Part 1. And in S7, he didn't seem to mind Spike at all right after episode: Him. And didn't care about Buffy's attachment to him.

What will Xander gain from Buffy dating someone else just because this guy is the closest thing to him? She still won't be with Xander. I don't think Xander is this pathetic, anyway. He's petty but not pathetic, if he still wanted Buffy, he'll still fight for her, hate every guy she's gonna date... not accept a guy just because he reminds him of himself.

im not sure of my opinion on whether i agree this was actually happening or not, but i do think that if it were, what he would gain is hope that, hey, she's dating someone like him. it could be him next.

Re:

I would say the soul reason for the Xan-Man showing love for Riley is not only cause he's human, but more like himself. He has weaknesses just like Xander, and maybe- just maybe he dosen't make Xander feel as inferior as a vampire might. Xander has a deep love for all of his women, and I think regardless of whom the women are dating he likes to believe he can protect them in any situation. He fights with bare, mortal hands- not fangs and superhuman strength. Maybe he had a stronger bond with Riley because he felt like he was another man just fighting for what was right. Someone who didn't steal quite as much of Xanders thunder. With Angel around Xander was always "The Zeppo"..With Riley it was different.

(Oh yeah, it also may have helped out a little that Riley had not bitten and killed a gazillion people in his lifetime, nor had he gotten all homicidal after sex.....just a though.)

Then why is he pushing her to be with Riley? They're about to break up, it's Xander biggest chance to be with her. He could have held her in his arms and spoke badly of Riley in hope she'll finally see him.

Instead he does the opposite. He tried to get her to make things right with Riley.

I think he liked Riley a lot because he was a stand up guy who gave up a lot for Buffy, and he's not a dead man walking, he's someone who can give Buffy a future.

Riley was the only guy Buffy was with that Xander could really relate to, for starters. He was an everyman...albeit a secret agent military-type dude but he was down-to-earth and essentially NORMAL. Plus, Xander was happily dating Anya and therefore didn't have the same jealousy issues he had with Angel...and I think he felt that Riley was a very stabilizing influence for her. Angel seemed to cause nothing but heartbreak and drama...and Spuffy was clearly deranged and dysfunctional.

I always felt Xander had a bit of a non-sexual man-crush on Riley. So, I think that's some of it.

I think another part of it that he could see that Riley wasn't bad for Buffy, and since he couldn't quite see that he wasn't right for her, he was encouraging the idea of a relationship that wasn't as tumultuous (sp?) as her relationship with Angel had been.

Xander is the one that sees and he could see that Riley was right for Buffy. People look at Xander's friendship with Riley for the basis of his advice to Buffy when that's not it. Xander loves Buffy and wants her to be happy, this is why he confronts her about Riley. Xander realizes that if Buffy would just let Riley in they could be happy together. This is why he approves of Riley.

Riley didn't try to kill Xander, or his best friends, or one of his favorite teachers, or torture his mentor, or ya know..try to get the world sucked into hell.

I'd say getting himself bit was cake compared to Angelus.
Plus, Xander had begun to see Buffy as his hero rather than the object of his affections.
