I think his first job was arranging Giles' books, and then the college bar, but what's after that?

We never actually saw it but Anya mentioned it in an ep, it was season four, they were in a crypt with Giles waiting for a demon to rise?

The dialogue was something like:

[Talking about being a sex phone operator]

Anya [to Xander]: They looked down on you
Xander: They hated you!
Anya: Yes, but they didn't look down on me!

I'm going with it being about Xander's friends, as the whole ep is spike breaking them up as a group.

It does work with Xander's friends. They do seem to look down on him this season (and many seasons to be honest) and we all know they dislike Anya.
