From the story "Antique," we learn that Xander spent a year as Dracula's manservant. Is there any background story anywhere about exactly why Xander found himself in the role once more as being under Drac's influence once more? I sense that there just might be a very interesting story there if anyone ever bothered to tell it.
 
I think that in one of the comics they said Xander had been writing letters to Drac ever since season 5, and after the Death of Anya, he decided to visit him. It was his way of dealing with the grieve I guess.
 
that sounds silly, Xander keeping in touch with Dracula. like that would actually happen.
 
Yup, in the 13th comic, Andrew explains that Xander needed "guy time" after Anya died. In "Antique", it looks like Buffy decided to bring him back. You can tell Dracula enjoyed Xander's company.
 
I think it's strange. Xander is shown to be totally opposed to any vampire-y thing. Even if the "thing" has a soul or has totally proven that he could be trusted, like Angel; or Spike in seasons 6-7. But he's in love with an ex-demon; and now we're supposed to believe he's kept in touch with Dracula who wanted to kill Buffy and everyone. Seriously ?!
If that's true, then the only explanation for his hatred towards Angel and Spike is jealousy. Buffy-related jealousy. And that just puts everything in question... doesn't it ?
 
Actually Xander's attitude towards vampires started to soften a little in S7 after Selfless. There was no moment of nastiness towards Spike at all after Him, in fact, he seemed quite supportive of Spike and Buffy's obsession with him. So Xander's vampire hate isn't as immortal as you guys make it out to be. Plus he had his moments before of helping out Angel and (souless) Spike.

Drew made a clever move making Andrew tell the story because we shouldn't believe every word coming out of Andrew's mouth. He's a storyteller by nature. Just look how he easily made up a story about Buffy being in Rome and Xander being in Africa when both were in Scotland.

As for Xander staying a year with Dracula, Drew retconed it into a few months.
 
Personally I think it makes total sense. It happens a lot to people that are so verbally against something because on the side they are guilty of what they are hating. It's almost like people that are so homophobic because they don't want to admit to themselves that they might be gay. Now I know that might be stretching it a bit but I think that applies here. Xander obviously fell hard under Drac's thrall and apparently it never fully went away when Drac left. He kept in touch and Drac, who found Xander "strange and off-putting", found a liking for Xander. He was probably so anti-vamp towards Spike because of the guilt he felt for keeping in contact with Drac. That's my opinion at least.
 
And lets not forget, Anya went out with Dracula, so I guess grieving with Drac isn't as far fetched as it sounds.
