I'd say it was still a little ambiguous up until Buffy Season 5, if you leave out S5, you could make the same arguments about Xander hating Spike. The fact that Xander was pretty much the biggest advocate of the Buffy/Riley relationship shows that he really does want Buffy to find a guy (who's not him), but doesn't think vampires can be trusted.
