Xander's depressed state in #1, his passive-aggressive attitude toward Buffy, his angry burst in #8.... something is going on there.

Some fans are arguing that he's showing symptoms of PTSD. Could it be that after years of shrugging off his pain with a joke and a brave smile that Xander finally broke? So much has happened to him that he'd forced himself to get past quickly: losing Jesse, the attempted rape/murder by Faith, losing his eye, losing Anya, losing Renee, losing Giles...etc

I'm intrigued. I can't wait to see what's going on with him.

I've been really curious about Xander lately too, which is odd because I never been even the slightest bit invested in him as a character. I've found I like him more in the comics, go figure. 🙂

I suppose it could be PTSD; he has been through a lot and he doesn't seem to deal with it so it would make sense that he would eventually reach a breaking point. If that were the case I wonder why no one else has seemingly noticed it. I would have expected Dawn or Willow to have mentioned noticing it; or even Spike making a comment about it. It just seems odd that no one would acknowledge a significant change in him.

He could just be fed up with the fight. He has given a lot to it and if he feels like Buffy isn't taking things seriously and/or is in denial about the current situation that could be causing to sort of mentally check out.

I do wonder about the secret the mentioned between Buffy and Xander. I've been a little disappointed that they haven't even mentioned that. It could also be another reason for Xander's attitude; maybe he is just annoyed that he has to keep the secret. Maybe it is what's keeping him and Dawn from living their "normal" life.

Xander tends to sweep his problems and pain under a rug and tries to get over them quickly. Unlike Buffy and Willow, who deal with their pain, he just never does. His home life, Jesse, his eye, Anya, Renee.... he'd gone through a lot and dealt with it by cracking jokes to hide. No wonder he'd eventually break.

I personally doubt that Xander and Willow are still friends. They've never shared a scene since S7. So no wonder she wouldn't notice. Buffy is too busy with her problems. Spike doesn't care about Xander. And Dawn who lives with him in the apartment is annoyed by his behavior.

Yeah, I suppose that could be the case. It's sad that no one has noticed or mentioned it though. I would have though Dawn would have at least vented about it to Willow. *shrugs* I like to pretend that Riley would have noticed and tried to talk to him at the party. 😀

You know, why do you think Xander and Willow have drifted so far apart? They seemed solid in s6, and I know that everyone sorta went their own ways in 7 and 8 but it seems odd to me that Willow would put effort (even if minimal) in to her relationship with Buffy but not Xander.

*remembers the Xander/Riley friendship in S5 fondly!*

You know, why do you think Xander and Willow have drifted so far apart?

Because they haven't interacted after S7 at all. They haven't shared a scene together. Xander is mostly paired with Buffy and Dawn, Willow with everybody who isn't Xander. They don't come off as best friends anymore. Best friends spend time together, check on each other, talk with each other, that's just not Xander and Willow anymore. Hasn't been Xander and Willow for a very long time.

I just realized that when it comes to comics I usually spend much more time focusing on the main plot and I forget the smaller details, like the panels you just posted. The moment in #8 when he punched the wall seemed to come out of nowhere for me, but I guess I just wasn't paying very much attention...

What's happening with Xander really makes me sad! I was just coming to accept him and Dawn together and I like how he's taken charge and grown up in the comics. Judging by the conversation with Buffy, maybe they're talking about one specific thing rather than just a general state of depression/PTSD? It just seems to me that when he says Dawn "never has to know", he's not just talking about his state of mind. Maybe something else (this specific something-secret) has driven him to depression/PTSD?

Not Xander and Willow. The writers seem to take their friendship for granted. It happened in the last seasons of the TV show (which is why the yellow crayon speech doesn't really work for me) but back then they at least had scenes together and occasionally even had (gasp!) one on one conversations. Nowadays they avoid each other as the plague. The utter lack of any Xander/Willow interaction for me is one of the biggest flaws of the comics and god knows I can list a lot of such flaws.

Slight spoilers for 9.09:

My problem with the PTSD story line can be summarised with "What, now?". Come on, you can't just have a character kill his best friend in the second episode of the show, pull him though hell and back over the course of eight seasons with little to no signs that he is deeply traumatised by the horrors he has experienced and then have him suffer PTSD after a long time-skip. I don't know, it just seems a bit contrived.

Not to mention they moved on from Angel's "catatonia" so quickly one barely managed to say whitewashing before he was back, all dark, mysterious and heroic. I don't think the writers are up to the task of writing such a serious condition. Just look at Buffy's arc this season - it's incredibly simplistic and repetitive (albeit full with bizarre twists). If Xander does have PTSD, I reckon he will be magically cured soon.

For my money it could be simple frustration - vampires and demons are public knowledge yet once again Buffy and her pals need to do the dirty work. I suspect Xander still has an itch to help people but was hoping he wouldn't really have to do it any more. And now zompires are killing police officers as if it's Sunnydale all over again and idiots like Severin are actually lining up to be vamped. Maybe I am projecting but I think Xander must be going all "Is it never over?" Him helping Dowling can also be his way of hoping somebody in charge gets a clue. They just need to stop the guessing game and tell us what's his problem soon.

As for his protectiveness of Dawn, when I read that, it bugged me at first but after remembering that Xander has lost Anya, Buffy (for a few months), Renee, Tara, Giles, etc, the possibility of losing Dawn should always be in the back of his mind.

Sorry, I worded that question wrong. I totally agree that they are hardly even friends. I know they haven't spent any time together I was just asking what your speculations were as to why they no longer spoke. They never really gave us a reason so I was just wondering what your take was. 🙂

I wonder if Dawn started to disappear for periods of time, due to the disappearance of magic. Maybe Spike's future quest for the chards of the Seed is connected to Dawn's situation.

"It's a Wonderful Life" is the title of a film where the hero sees how his possible absence could change the lives around him.

Ooh, I like that Dawn theory, would def. make things interesting!
I really enjoyed Xander's prominence in season 8, and his role as "Watcher". Also his friendship with Buffy aand his caring ffor the Slayers he was training (I liked this about Andrews storyline too). So I am disappointed in his (lack of) storyline this season. I always wondered if his depression had to do with grieving the loss of his role in the Slayer army aand he had to keep that a secret from Dawn Because she wanted a normal life. But now I'm not so sure. I do think that part of that scene has to do with setting up the "who's your daddy" thing, which again iss disappointing.

I think he's struggling with Giles' death. Giles has been one of his best friends for 7+ years. They became really close in season 4 when Buffy didn't really need them so they turned to each other instead (in a non-slashy way). I hope we see more of Xander in season 9 instead of him becoming a background character.

And the bit about " never needs to know" about Dawn. I'm also thinking Buffy told him they could lose her because of no magic, she could simply vanish one day and not return. She's still the Key right?

Hahaha!

I only quote the writer 🙂

Series writer Victor Gischler, who recently finished a run on Marvel's X-Men, states that this separation is what drives Spike into his own misadventures, running across a few demons searching for the shards of the destroyed seed in hopes of extracting some of the leftover magic.

So, see, it's a very special vegetable! 🙂

No no, I was teasing you about your spelling. They said 'shards', you said 'chards':

But yes, if it IS a chard seed, we can all have a nice salad while we're bringing magic back into the world. 🙂

Live and learn, ha-ha! 🙂

Thanks for pointing this out, tbessie, now I'll remember the difference between "chard" and "shard"!

Back to Xander's issues - I hope it's connected with Dawn, because it would make a juicy story, I think.

I was thinking that too. Maybe it's been too long since he's lived a normal life, maybe he can't be normal.

You're right, and this depresses me. 🙁

Seems that Buffy and Xander's storylines this season are mirroring each other. They both want a normal life, they're so desperate to have one, but they keep getting sucked back to the supernatural.

I believe she is completely human, when they changed her form they made her completely human.
This is a really interesting theory though!
