In episode 3, the Witch, Xander tells Willow because she is dragging out and analogy, "Will, I get it, you don't have to drive it throught my head like a railroad Spike."
Spiek got his name for drivign railroad spikes through people's heads, so do you think this is some EXTREMELY VAGUE foreshaodwing, or somethign?

Your thoughts?

Hm I've never thought about it but that is possible, Joss being Joss, although if I really think about it I would guess that Spike was a later invention but that maybe around this point the idea of someone getting that nickname for that reason popped into Joss'/ the writers heads

I have no comment for this thread. I don't even have something sarcastic to say.

And yet you post? 😉

I don't think they thought far ahead, I think it's a coincidence. A Spandery coincidence. 😀

Ah, Spander.

And I doubt it meant anything. Just a coincidence.

I always think of Spike when he says this....but who knows whether it was a coincidence or not? (Apart from Joss of course 😉 )

The idea of the character Spike might have developed out of that line. I've done that before, I'll write something and then it makes me think "oh that's a cool idea for a character..." but I usually end up erasing what I wrote previously and turning it into the character, if that makes sense.. Anyway, who knows, Joss does plan things way ahead of time.

That's a pretty good explanation on a plausible way the character of Spike was created!

Yea I'm gonna go with the others and say it was not foreshadowing. Either a coincidence or they picked Spike's name because of this quote. 😉

I have to agree with the consensus here. The image it conjures up is pretty graphic, so it may have sewn the seeds for a bad guy who rams railroad spikes into people, but I think as a reference specifically to Spike? Not so much.

Ah, Spander.

I agree, it's not more than a coincidence. It's a common word.
Also, I lke that thought: where Xander said that because the Powers That Be got it into his head so that when he would meet Spike, he would understand that he's actually in love with him, because he's STUCK in his head. 😀

Neat! I don't think it's very common when people refer to railroad spikes as weapons. Might of gotten the idea about using that idea for Spike's past.

I agree. I think that maybe once the episode was written, they came to think of a character...which turned out to be Spike.

I love to know all the back story to Buffyverse references and was trying to recall were I read about an old serial killer who used railroad spikes to kill their victims. I didn't find what I was looking for, but found these two incidents instead that I thought were worth sharing.

Is Life imitating art?

Killer uses railroad spike to murder a woman in 2002. on pg 4

''Maher's forehead wounds were caused by an attempt to drive a railroad spike into her forehead''

And on a positive note, in 2010 a woman uses a railroad spike to ward off an attacker

I agree with the consensus that it wasn't intended as an early reference to Spike, but the fact that the idea was obviously re-used later adds a nice little extra bit of texture to the show, for people to notice on repeat viewings.

I always wondered this too...great foreshadowing even if it wasn't intended. Everything just came together for this show perfectly. It's flawless.
