XFiles Rewatch Season 1

@Cohen @NotASlayer
So on my Xfiles rewatch Iv made it to the first episode of Xfiles Season 4. I can already tell Carter was making up the main storyline as he went along. Take the Alien Bounty Hunter. Its been established that his blood is poisonous and you have to Stab him in the back of the neck to kill him. Except by this episode you don't. His blood is fine now apparently and he can survive a stabbing (why was he playing dead then ?) He also just let's Scully go rather than use her as a bargaining chip like last time in S2 (basically
it's the exact same plot but with bees 🐝)
Anyway the who episode is full of vague mystery box dialogue that makes no sense and SPOILERS Chris Carter had no idea either amd was clearly making things up as he went along !
They also killed off Mr X even though he was a fun
Character and great actor and simply replaced him with a less interesting but prettier Marita Coverrubias, overall it felt pointless.
And Cigarette man had the Alien Bounty Hunter heal Mulders mum for reasons that completely contradict him having his Dad murdered a season ago 🤷‍♂️

Well, that's because William was Fox's dad when the Bounty Hunter killed him, but he wasn't by the time Ex-Mrs. Mulder was healed. ...

I'm on The Field Where I died and my god David Duchovnys acting is awful in this. Its unintentionally hilarious during the hypnosis scene 🤣
Apparently the Actress who plays Melissa was the wife of the writer and it makes sense while he makes her a multiple personality to give her different roles to showcase. Unfortunately she's not great either and it's above her range.

As for the plot itself it doesn't really make sense but not in a it's fun way but in a boring way

Maybe all the different Alien Bounty Hunters (I think someone needed to look up the definition of "bounty hunter") have different abilities? 😀 Okay, that is just trying to make sense of something that is more likely down to poor continuity.

So I did the 2 parter Tunguska and Terma. Essentially it's an entertaining mystery box 2 parter that's not really Anwsered properly and contradicts itself in the 2 parter itself and with what came before.
So before the black oil was an intelligent Alien organism that possessed people including Kryceck in order to get back to its space ship.
In this it's a bacterial organism that's not Intelligent but can control people making a guy in a bio suit go comatose (incidentally Scully just dismissing) the concerns of her colleague about there own suits and possible contamination is just huh !!!) EXCEPT Mulder gets infected and he's fine. There's no effects nothing, he's OK so why isn't he comatose, the episode doesn't make clear 🤷‍♂️ it attempts to say that others who had it are also fine but had to lose a body part like an Arm though given its an infection in there blood I'm not sure how that works ???
And how does Mulder teleport from Siberea to Washington DC so fast ???
Anyway Kryceck shows up and he spends most of the 2 parter getting punched or tortured by somone (why did that group do that to him ?) That it's basically a 2 parter of Kryceck torture porn, it turns out this was all part of his plan and that a Russian Assassin (who doesn't kill Scully, why, cause well reasons I guess?) whose basically filling in the Alien Bounty Hunter role of killing loads of people is working for him.
But Krycek was the guy who brought Mulder in on this (why???) His plan makes no sense and only works due to multiple coincidences and conveniences that if even if 1 didn't happen he'd be screwed !!
This 2 parter is flashy to look at but by God you give it more than 1 seconds worth of thought and it falls apart

And how does Mulder teleport from Siberea to Washington DC so fast ???

This is probably one of the less serious errors, simply because it crops up so often in media. People travelling huge distances in not enough time because the writers simply didn't bother to think through travel times.

This basically describes all the alien metaplot(s).

The Alien Bounty Hunter could easily be multiple individuals who use the same face, the benefit of being a shape shifter. Remember when he worked with the Klan to stop baseball from integrating?

As for being a bounty hunter, I think that's how the Syndicate thinks of him, as a specialist contractor they can call to deal with loose ends, for a price. He may be an employee of the overlords proper, he may not. Like, I don't think Frohike could put a picture of Spender and an offer of a few thousand dollars on the Dark Web and get a response from him, although Carter would have loved the Dark Web. But, cleaner is probably the better term for him.

Or course, if he was a true bounty hunter, that would explain why he left Mulder and Scully alive. Nobody paid him to kill them.

So I did Paper Hearts which is a highly regarded episode. Now it's good with a great idea of Mulder having to confront the possibility that his sister was murdered by a serial killer not Alien abducted and the actor who plays the killer gives a great peformance and comes across as truly horrific on screen buuuuttt.... The execution in the final act is terrible. I'm sorry but the final act doesn't work for me. No way would they let out a child killer with Mulder on his own without other guards and without authorisation. I just knew he was going to escape and hey presto he does with Mulders badge and gun. I'm sorry but how the hell was Mulder not reprimanded for this !!!
He then kidnapped the child he spoke to on the plane which I knew was going to happen and Mulder would then shoot him. It was all so predictable. Also that poor kid is probably traumatised and it's not even remarked on by Mulder !!!
So yeah great episode but ruined by a terrible third act

Yeah, this was one of the more noted criticisms of 24. Jack Baur regularly made it from one side of LA to the other during commercial breaks. Realistically, some episodes should be an hour of him stuck in traffic.

Character and great actor and simply replaced him with a less interesting but prettier Marita Coverrubias, overall it felt pointless.

Incidentally, "UN Blonde" (as she was called by fans back then) is Laurie Holder, AKA Andrea from The Walking Dead"

It is so common that there are at least two tropes referring to it. Travelling at the Speed of Plot and Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale

So I finished Season 4 Gethesemane to be frank is a rather boring Season finale where not very little happens and what does happens is both boring and (from the story and character perspective) makes no sense if you even give it the slightest thought (how could Babcock saw out and then Bury the Alien in the Ice by himself for example) I know Season 5 premier will go into more detail but on its own as well as a season finale Gethesmane is a poor episode.
Seriously the idea put foward by the Military officer was that all this was done as a big fake simply to string Mulder along is so stupid it shouldn't need an analysis to say how Mulder and Scully could take it seriously for a second
Carter really should not write episodes by himself he's awful at it !!
Season 4 as a whole has both hits and misses and ironically is more like S1 than say S2 or S3 (best Season of the Xfiles)
Gareth Morgan and James Wong really should've bothered to watch the episodes they missed while they'd been away but they still created the best episode of the season Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man. It's a shame that Carter shot down killing Frohike but it's still the best episode of the season for all that. Ironically they also wrote the worst episode The Field Where I Died which was painful to watch

It's a shame that Carter shot down killing Frohike

Mentioning Frohike makes me wonder: Have you seen The Lone Gunmen spinoff? It's not something I've been able to get as yet, though admittedly I don't hold high expectations for the series.

No, because Iv never been interested in the Lone Gunmen. To me they're just like the Nerds on Buffy. Yes the writers loved them and thought they were brilliant but I didn't

Not having seen the series made their last appearances on the show confusing. It wasn't helped by the fact that I saw the mini reboot episode before their "final" appearance.
Re: False Flag; False flag is a great idea, but, it requires planning from the start of the series to actually worked. Like, let's say they had kept all alien encounters down to Close Encounters of the first and second type. Then the few third types were restricted to either, 1. MIBs, 2. Space suited up, 3. Hoaxes or 4. Happened to someone else. Something you could cultivate a skeptical narrative around. But the way they did it here? Mulder is a fool for believing it, and you'd have to be a fool as well.

Which episode are you talking about ? Iv only just started Season 5
So Iv noticed lots of Buffy verse names on the show now like David Greenwalt (he must've gone straight from this to Buffy) and Tim Minear and Howard Gordon etc
Post automatically merged:

@NotASlayer So Iv seen The Post Modern Promethus and I was bored. There's one or 2 good moments but Carter still can't write for 💩 whether it's in black or white or not. This is also a stand alone too so you can't say it's the main mystery box arc.
And all though the Monster didn't rape, he basically aided and abetted his dad doing it so Mulder and Scully taking him to a Cher Concert is kind of strange.

So I saw the 2 parter Patient X and The Red and The Black. First part was better than the second but to be frank all these mystery boxes and contradictions show Carter had no idea for the main story.
plus cutting away at the end from the final confrontation was such a cop out.
Anyway theres an Alien resistance to the Black Oil with no eyes or mouths (Whedon so ripped them off for the Bringers) but if they are the same race as the Alien Bounty Hunter why not simply shape shift like those guys ?
And if theyve got space ships too why are there not big starwars battles in the sky ?
Side note note But Brian Thompson in a polo neck jumper is hilarious 😄

My big question though is why the Aliens with their superior technology etc are bothering with a cabal and human conspiracies etc. Why dont they simply land (not crash) and start infecting people ?
If say this was real life and an Orange Alien wanted something of ours it would simply say I want it threaten to use force if it didnt get it, it wouldnt bother with a load nonsense like that, so why are these guys Im just saying 🤷‍♂️

Honestly, the alien invasions that have aliens flattening Earth's defences with superior technology in a matter of minutes at most are the only type that make much sense, unless their technology is barely above our own (Harry Turtledove's Worldwar series for instance). Heck, if all you want to do is kill off humanity, just chuck rocks or c-fractional missiles at the world. Such tends to make for very short stories, however.

Redux. The episode where Mulder stops believing in aliens, and comes to believe it's all a false flag operation to cover up government activities.

Re: Alien Invasion; Come on, if you have the ability to project planetary invasion level force across the vastness of the cosmos, you don't need to. What do you need, fuel? You have nuclear fusion, you don't need fuel. Materials? You can blow up a planet and have drones mine it, you don't need mines. Land? You don't need that many colonies. Water? Most common elements in the universe. While I'm sure there are circumstances in which Alien Invasions work, most interstellar empires have power on a level that wouldn't even notice an atomic age civilization.

Heck, they have been planning this invasion since the ice age. I'm surprised they even remember us.

This is why I like the reboot's scenario better. Han Solo crashing on Sol-III a million years ago would go unnoticed by the empire, but the ruins of the falcon would be the most significant discovery in Earth's history.

Invading Earth for the water is one of the dafter reasons that's cropped up in fiction, but there could be others.

Terrestrial planets may be thin on the ground and maybe they lack terraforming technology, or maybe it simply doesn't work in the long run.
They are profoundly xenophobic and can't tolerate the existence of any other sentient being.
They view other civilisations, no matter what their technology, as a threat and eliminate them.
They need to conquer, even if it makes no sense.
Their technology is enough to travel interstellar distances, but other than that is similar to Earth's.
They have the very human potential to be complete b******s and do it just because they can.
They are alien. Who the frack knows why they do anything? (Seriously; many our attempts at portraying aliens tend to be rubber forehead aliens, and even portrayals of starfish aliens are influenced by how we think)

But in this universe why do the Rebels cut out there own eyes and set people on fire. How come they don't shape shift ???
