I wanted to share an experience I had at work recently.

I work as a manager at a performing arts theatre located on our local campus. This job includes supervising and training freshman-aged ushers. Most of them are 18-19 years old.

One shift, I was chatting with one of them about television. He was telling me about how he'd just discovered Mad Men and loved it. I agreed that was one of my favorites as well, then asked him what were some of his other favorite shows. He listed a couple I'd never heard of. Then he asked me the same question.

I replied that Buffy was, of course.

Our conversation:

Him: "What's Buffy?"

Me: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer?"

Him: "Never heard of it."

Me: "You seriously have not heard of Buffy? It's am insanely popular cult TV show about a girl who is chosen to hunt and kill vampires."

All I got from his kid was a total blank stare.

I felt SO OLD! LOL. And I'm only 31.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I'd figure with it on Netflix and vampires being popular now they would have at least heard of it.
I don't really know any 18-19 year olds, apart from my cousin, who's 19 and LOVES Buffy.... I was so proud when she told me that! But if you think about people 20 years your senior, who are early fifties now.... did you watch what they used to watch? I can't say I did!

True, but I at least have heard of shows they used to watch in their generation...

Excellent point! :-D
Here's a pertinent one.

I was working in this little restaurant, serving, and all of the bus people were much younger than me. On a slow day we were talking about our first celebrity crushes. I don't remember theirs because I'd never heard of them. Haha.

Then they asked me and I said David Boreanaz. (Though sometimes I think my first celebrity crush may have been Harrison Ford.)

But anyway, they were like, "You mean that old guy from Bones?"

. . . Yup.

I'm surprised! I'm 24 and most people my age have seen, or at least heard of Buffy. I guess that already is a 6 year difference with 18yo, but I'm still suprised by it!

Yeah, to be fair. For each generation there's a bigger and bigger backlog of classic movies and shows that everyone "must" see.
It can't be that easy to keep up with them all.

To their advantage is that it's easier than ever to get access to them with all the streaming services, DVD's and stuff.

Yep this has happened to me, mostly with music. I will mention a favourite band or song and they are like 'who/what?' So many people I know, even my age, have never seen Buffy. Obviously have no taste at all 😉
