Long time Buffy fan, first time Angel viewer...I gotta say, I was lukewarm about Angel as a character on Buffy but he is winning me over on the Angel series. He's just so much more likable when he's the central character. He has a more compassionate side to him, kind of fatherly.

I'm almost done with season 1 and he's had so many awesome moments so far but he totally owned 5x5 and Sanctuary. I felt so bad for Faith and loved that he wasn't giving up on her (and I was never one to sympathize with Faith before). Then I was clapping and cheering like crazy when he told it like it was to Buffy at the end of Sanctuary.

I'm so glad to finally be getting into the Angel series, especially since I keep hearing it gets better past season 1.

Any other recent Angel converts? Or anyone who didn't like Angel before seeing him on his own show?

So glad you're enjoying it and it does get even better over the next couple of seasons :)

I liked him before, but I gained a whole new respect for him after watching his series

Yep, Angel's the man. 🙂

His series is really, really good. I always get a little sad because he's separated from Buffy, but the best Angel episodes easily stand with the best of the Buffy series. The first season is amazing, and you're right, they keep getting better. I actually think that's one of the biggest strengths of both Buffy and Angel actually. Most long-running shows peak in S2, but Buffy and Angel just keep getting better and they both stay strong.

And Angel as a character is amazing in his own series. I loved him in Buffy but they really expand on him now and who Angelus was (through flashbacks) throughout the series. There's some really awesome characters as recurring cast members (and a lot you haven't met yet). The fifth season is spectacular and the series finale, without spoiling anything, is probably my all time favorite.

Angel's a great character, awesome hero. Love the show.

I must admit I've always been an Angel fan but I totally agree that his character feels more whole on his own show, but that's probably because it's focused around him and they needed to add more depth to his character. I really loved the 5x5 and Sanctuary episodes (because I'm a big faith fan mostly) and although I love Bangel it was nice to see him stick up for Faith as if he was getting over the drama that comes with most Bangel moments. Season two is also awesome so you'll enjoy that loads too.

Angel is so so so so so much better on Angel than he was on buffy (in my stupid and humble opinion).... and that pretty much goes for all cross over characters (excluding buffy) they shine brighter on angel (I feel) for some reason.

an opinion is never stupid and should never be humble :)
I'm about halfway through season 2 now (and yes, it definitely does pick up and get a lot better!), and I completely agree. I wasn't a huge fan of Angel on Buffy. I don't hate him, but I wasn't mooning over him either. But on his own, with more focus on his character, I actually like him a good bit.

I'm glad I finally decided to give the show a chance. Nice to see I'm not the only person watching it for the first time! 🙂

Oh man, I totally hated Angel on BtVS. He was a big brooding hunk of cardboard. I just thought he was really boring, and how come they fell in love with each other so quickly? So I expected to hate him on AtS, but he's just so awesome. He's really great on his own show.

I'm probably in the minority, but I think Angel is a lot better than BtVS. It gets better with every season! The show really gets good in season 2, the stories become more serialized and the ensemble cast gets a lot bigger and better

And Lorne...is just epic.

That's how I felt about him too on BtVS. He wasn't fleshed out enough, and I guess I understand why he wasn't, with the focus being on the Scoobies.

I'm getting a better sense of the guilt he's lived with and his existential journey in redeeming himself through AtS. He's not just the cardboard boyfriend. I actually feel invested in his "curse" now. I think this show might also change my opinion of Faith for the better.

It'll change your view of Wesley too. 😉

I love Angel, both the character and the series. It's funny, I actually appreciate him more on Buffy after watching Angel.

What did you think of "I Will Remember You"? Did you cry? I always cry.

Agree with everything here. And yes, tears have indeed been shed on that one
Loved AtS. I still haven't been able to pick between AtS and BtVS,as such, but AtS probably edges it for me. Definitely though in Angel,it brought out a whole new side to him,and the others (Cordi/Wes/Faith) (as the series go on).

Also gets better and better as each season goes on.
