You Have a 'Second Brain', And We Now Know How It Makes You Poop

Think twice before going to the bathroom.

For the first time, scientists have observed the distinct pattern of neuronal firing that occurs during a bowel movement – and it's not all in your head.

The enteric nervous system (ENS), aka your 'second brain', is a mesh network of millions of neurons that live inside and help control your gastrointestinal tract, and new research in mice shows how these 'brain cells' fire to make your colon do its thing.

"These findings identify a previously unknown pattern of neuronal activity in the peripheral nervous system," explains neurophysiology Nick Spencer from Flinders University in Australia.

The enteric nervous system is 'peripheral' in that it's separate from the central nervous system (CNS) we normally hear about, which is made up of the brain and the spinal cord.

Together, they help control and regulate the majority of our bodily activity, but the second brain is no slouch itself, with its own neural circuits that not only communicate with the CNS but also help the ENS control the digestive tract autonomously.

"It is really a brain of its own," Spencer told ScienceAlert, pointing out some research actually suggests the ENS could be considered our 'first brain' from an evolutionary perspective.

Yay poo science! Correct
Probably why people say they feel stuff in their 'gut'. Because if it's so full of receptors and nerve endings, it probably is responsive to all the changes in our body and we would probably feel different in our belly in response to any kind of emotional stimuli. Just a thought.

Yes!

This is the brain i am working on now 😀

I was watching a moon wisodm video this morning (which I loved until it was all about finding a spiritual man equal - gross) anyway she was going on about the solar plexes and how we hold memories and experiences there. I didnt get to the bit about letting it go cos i got sick of the man-craving part. Its SO weird to have info I 'know' confirmed by others cos the things I know are not taught and unconventional. Hopefully shes right about this moon stuff - it would explain my difficulties over the last few weeks and heart problems/afib in connection with my father.

Can the moons pull have an impact on how the gut works? I mean, i know for my sciatica flares when the moon is full, much like other people in town. Can the pull affect our gut brain too?

I havent put much thought into this yet, so dont blow me down. There is just so much conventional science ignores and i am beginning to see the patterns for what they are.

Consciousness is more widely distributed than we have been led to believe. There are numerous stories of people getting a heart transplant and suddenly wanting to buy a motorcycle where it was eventually determined that the heart donor was a motorcyclist. There was a program hosted by William Shatner about people who had behavioural changes when they received transplants and some of the stories were grim - one of the transplant patients committed suicide in an unusual manner and it turned out to be in the same manner as the donor.

I have looked at astrology and although I no longer cast horoscopes for other people, most analyses I have made turned out to be true. I gave up on it after one horoscope I did for one man. He asked if he was going to live. I told him I didn't know why he was still here at all because his horoscope showed a grand square - a sign of persistent trouble. Three years later he died after complications from a heart bypass. Since then, I have not cast horoscopes for anyone.

I have read a little about phrenology (the art of defining character and predicting events from facial shape and features) and it also seems to be accurate.

The fact that we do not see a cause and effect relationship does not mean it is not there.

Ah! I used to do Tarot readings for people and I was quite good at it. I think the cards' images tap into something in our sunconscious. Eventually I became so adept at Tarot, people got spooked. When things I predicted came true, they'd look at me VERY strangely.

I can still do accurate readings, though. I prefer the Rider Tarot. 😎

This went through the horse space a while back. The earlier readings were quite true in the horses character, but one it gained popularity, it did depend on who was reading and you could tell straight up who was genuine in this area.

So its safe to say organs hold some type of memory (which is interesting to me cos I only just took myself OFF the donor list last week) and what we feed those organs - experiences and physical fuel, is important to our whole body function. I dont understand why humans are not exploring this area to the extent they are exploring pharmaceuticals. Stopping issues before they start. How much more data do we need before society can see the links between what is being fed to us and the major health and community problems we experience (in my culture).

How much fluid is held in the gut brain? Does the water quality affect it? I notice, for sensitive soul me - it does. I've just been at a neighbours, town water in tea and I am pinging with pain. I'd probably meet "Manic" criteria in the DSM, just after a few cups of green tea with local water...
