"You like Buffy? So do you have a life?"

I think calling oneself a 'Buffy fan' and 'obsessive' is a little redundant. This is a show that, by it's nature and structure, does not support casual interest or the casual viewer. Mythology that's spread out over many episodes and even seasons, season long story arcs in a time when 'reality shows' (*gag*) are all the rage and characters that grow and change over time.

Am I obsessive about the show? Absolutely. Am I ashamed about it? Heck, no.

But I have met many people (on the internet) who watch Buffy but aren't the least obsessed. When I had found this board I told them about it, thinking they'd be as happy about it as I was, and they were like "ehh, how can there be that much to say about buffy? epo you're weird, we don't wanna talk to you anymore. go away." They watch it, but it's nothing more that a TV show for them, and that is what I don't get.. How can you watch Buffy like every day and not realize how special and perfect it is..?

I wasn't a nerd until I started watching BtVS. I tried all right, with the video games and the comics and all that, but I never had enough money to buy the real stuff so I never got into it. But, BtVS is worth spending my money on so now I'm the nerdiest person I know...

word eps! btvs totally, brought out the nerd in me. I was a nerd before but just didn´t know it
Yes, I have a life. It may be dull at times but I do.

I've watched Buffy from day one. I even watched the movie, that's how it started. The movie was not that good. It had bad acting, not going to say who's, but it had a great script. The only reason it was bad was because of the bad acting.

Almost everyone who knows be I watch Buffy and Angel. So it's never been a problem.

The whole antisocial thing might be because most of us would refuse to leave the house that Buffy or Angel was on. Well, I know I didn't because if you missed an episode most of the time you would be lost after that. I know I've missed enough episodes that I would be lost the next week.

Or it maybe because it's vampires and the supernatural. A lot of people don't believe in that stuff. But I know I do, that's one of the reasons that I watch. I tend to ignore they people who make stupid comments about the show. Because they don't know what they are talking about most of the time.

Besides being a fan of Buffy and Angel is a badge of honor, like being a trekkie, which I also am.

I used to get teased about my obsession a lot by my friends but now most of my friends are just as much obsessed as I am 🙂 I used to think strangers or people at school would make fun of me if they over heard me talking about Buffy, but I stopped caring a while ago.

Most of my friends think I'm a little crazy my BtVs/Angel obsession and they ask "Why can't you just watch Eastenders like us normal folk?" *cough* When has watching Eastenders ever made anyone normal!? And personally I chose Buffy over Eastenders anyday and in a heartbeat!

The way I see it people who admit to and watch buffy/angel and other weirdish programs like charmed are in a weird way brave because they are doing what thye want to do besides the fact that people migt think they are sad or weird, and its most likely the people who do call use weird are jealous because they're too afraid to be themselves so they put down others who aren't, so yey for us all cos we are brave!!! lol

Noone's ever really given me a hard time over being a Buffy/Angel fan. Hell, everyone I know likes both shows, friends, family, or otherwise. Now being a Godzilla fan since the age of 6, that will get you lynched! I speak from experience.

Yeah I get tormented all the time. It sucks, but there are so much worse things to obsess over!! Atleast I'm not a nympho or a drug addict yah know? So I blew a couple of hundred dollars to have the entire collection on DVD (so far - just missing Angel S5, but don't worry, it's preordered!) and I buy almost every book that I see that seems interesting, but hey, atleast it ain't crack!

Yup, that's what I'm thinking too, I'm still healthier (with my obsession) than most other people. Eh. Right..?
I have never had to defend myself because I have never been told that I have no life because I like Buffy. Although that is probably because my friends love it too, lol. 🙂 I'm glad they like it because I have somebody to talk to about Buffy. I am kind of obsessed with Buffy, I am on this forum and watching the show alot, but there is lots of other stuff I do with my life too.

Lol! Great thread. I don't mind getting told i have no life whether they know I watch Buffy or not lol as I don't have a life 😛. But thats not Buffy related, it's my own fault.

I belong to a website that used to be BuffyUK and each year there is a party where we all meet up for a weekend in a hotel. At first my non Buffy friends would find this amusing, saying we would sit around all weekend and discuss the ins and outs of the show. When in reality it was a chance for us to meet in person rather than chatting online and Buffy was rarely mentioned. I explained to them that we did just what they and I would do. Go shopping, get food have a drunken party and then drunken hotel room parties. Wake up with a hangover, have breakfast, say goodbye, go home and then laugh about what we all got up to.

I've even met people offline through Buffy. A friend of mine was up from London and we were going on a ghost tour and got chatting to the owner and got onto the subject of Buffy. That night when we went on the tour the guide said his boss had told him a Buffy fan was coming on the tour and asked who it was. I put my hand up and afterwards we ended up in the pub talking Buffy and other stuff. That was around 3 years ago (that long I can't remember) and I am still great friends with him, his boss and the entire tour company.

So never be ashamed of being a Buffy fan, those that don't understand are simply missing out on a great show, great talent and an excellent fan community.

Don't you just hate it when people find out you like Buffy and/or Angel and they think you have no life? It's not like spend 24 hours a day wacthing Buffy and it's not as if thats all we like and think about!

So what is it about Buffy and Angel that makes others think we so anti-social? And how much does it tick you off?

And, have any of you ever ever defended yourself?
That Is extremely annoying, but somewhat true

I am pretty anti social, but I hate it when people mock buffy, and think that I have no life because of it.

And no I don't defend mydself, i just don't even let the person know that he's existant.

but i'm not ashamed of it

buffy is like a part of me and my childhood

Even though my mom hates it, and so many other people, it never afflicted my opinion...

but liek other people have said, it's their loss, not ours 😀

Hmm...

Well, contrary to popular belief, I do have a life outside of BtVS and Angel. But the thing is, I don't shield my Buffy life from anyone because I'm not ashamed. I think I'm lucky because I've befriended many Buffy/Angel freaks over time and have benefited greatly from that. We even threw an Angel series finale party last May. If I didn't have all that backing me up, though, I still wouldn't be ashamed and I still wouldn't hide it. Because it's not a shameful show. I'm proud to be a fan because they're two of the most well-written and well-acted shows of all time. And I ain't kiddin'. So, I'm sure it can get frustrating at times, but I don't let that affect my viewing pleasure, you see? 😉

Oh god I hate it when people in my class see that I'm reading a Buffy book and start making fun of it, I'm like have you ever seen it and of course they never have. I mean I got my friends and Family addicted but kids in my class say it's dumb. I always say Buffy made me more social, I mean I've always been very shy and quiet but now I've lately gotten a bit more social. This is because I found a few people who liked Buffy and soon enough it was everyone I was close to was buying it. Sadly my life is pretty much talking about the Whedonverse to friends on the internet or my friends and watching the shows but it's still an improvement on doing nothing everyday

People make fun of me for being a nerd all the time, mostly because of my Buffy obsession. But it doesn't even bother me anymore, because they're right! Besides Buffy, I like Star Wars, and read every science book I can get my hands on. All my friends think that's hilarious. But it's not like I don't have a life outside of being nerdy. I do lots of un-nerdy stuff, too. So I don't care what people say.

I have to defend myself pretty often for my Buffy obsession, not as much anymore though, 'cause I think people are getting used to it. But I just talked to an old schoolmate on the phone, her and I was almost the only two in my class that liked Buffy and we had to put up with all kinds of comments almost everyday. What annoyed me the most about it though was that they didn't know what they where talking about at all, most of them never watch it at all and I remember one person that refused to watch it because she thought the characters had such silly names.. And yea, I do get offended when someone makes fun of my Buffy obsession, it's such a big part of my life and I wish they would just try and understand it anyway. But i don't care as much anymore, 'cause I got all you cool guys here that understands completely about the greatness of Btvs/Ats!

I had a funny encounter with a friend of mine the other day. We were talking about our favorite shows and I mentioned Buffy and she had this sad face like "You poor soul, you're watching crap like that?". She told me I shouldn't be watching it, and I asked her if she'd even seen one episode and of course she hadn't. That just made me realize that people talk a lot of crap about things they have no idea about all the time. That's life. So I told her to just watch any episode, as long as I could approve it. I wouldn't want her to get turned away from it because of Some Assembly Required, 😉.

Defensiveness

I don't have a problem about it. I mean some people give me a weird look when they come into my room and see that virtually half of my DVD collection is BTVS and Angel or they see the Spike/Buffy/Xander/Angel screensaver go across the screen of the computer but mre often than not I find that people have watched it and want to hear about it.

I used to get stick about watching it...do I care what other people think nope! Everyone has a little nerdy side in them I do And i'm not ashamed of it!
