Sometimes you go to the video store and wanna rent a movie but don't really know what movie to pick.
Maybe you wanna see a weird/obscure/unusual movie and not just the obvious favorite movie.

So, here we can tip each other about those movies that may be standing in some dark corner just waiting to be rented.

I'm gonna hype a movie that's not so new. In fact, it came out 1999. But it's my new favorite movie and I just have to tell ya'll about it.

It's called Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby starring the very very lovely Natasha Lyonne as Crystal "White Girl" Van Metter. It's a very crude and raw movie about a girl who escapes from juvenile prison together with a crazy serial killer called Cyclona and how they try to make their way to freedom but not really doing a good job.
It's not recomended for sensitive people since there's a lot of... bad stuff.

Just checked on www.ifilm.com , and yes this is indeed the sequel to the aforementioned 1996 film, albeit a very bad sequel, according to many reviewers.

I loved the first one...own it on DVD.

Other good obscure movies:

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken (it's a Disney movie, but not animated...very good)
The Last Unicorn (animated)
Heathers
Oh and I forget the name of it, but there was this really funny movie with Rose McGowan that was just a tad bit (being sarcastic here) disturbing...

Is it "Jawbreakers" That was on tv two nights ago. It was way disturbing.
 
No I do have that one though..it's not bad, but it's no Heathers..I liked Julie Benz in that one though..she's so different from Darla's sly cunning in that movie.

Yes, it's the sequel but according to the director, it's not. At least that's what he said in an interview. And I chose not to se it as a sequel but just as a movie. It might have recieved bad reviews, but it's not that that kind of movie that people like. 😀

It's a shame to know that so many good movies made over the years never got the attention they deserved. I make it a point to seek out such hidden gems whenever I go movie shopping. Allow me to add to the list here......


For those of you who enjoy musical flicks (not the OMWF type of musical where everybody breaks into song, but the soundtrack-driven type) I suggest renting THE IDOLMAKER (1980).

I truly don't comprehend why this movie was never a big hit in theaters, as it's quite engrossing and entertaining.

The film is set in the late '50's-early '60's and stars the late Ray Sharkey as Vincent Vaccari, a struggling but driven singer/songwriter trying to catch a break.

He already realizes that he lacks the right "look" to be a performer, so he settles on becoming a manager instead, looking for the right talent to perform his music and push into stardom.

He plucks a younger, better-looking singer out of a local nightclub band and molds him into a singing sensation....the teen idol Tommy Dee.
Vaccari later works his magic again when he finds a young man by the name of Ceasare (played by a very young Peter Gallagher, a bus boy in a local Italian restaraunt.....and turns him into an even bigger star.

Everyone is on top of the world. However, Vinnie Vaccari's obsession with stardom begins to take it's toll on him, and eventually leads to his own downfall, as his manic preoccupation turns him into an egomaniacal, selfish, unreasonable, and at times irrational taskmaster....pushing friendships and everybody else to their breaking point, eventually causing the disintegration of everything he's worked for.

The acting in this film is top notch all around, including a fine performance by a young Joe Pantoliano in a supporting role as Viccari's best friend and co-songwriter.

Moving the story along is the excellent soundtrack...a slew of bright and bouncy, original tunes. The only slight problem I have with this movie is that, while the music is toe-tappingly good.....it doesn't actually SOUND like fifties and sixties music. It sounds more like 1980's COVERS of music from those times....not evocative AT ALL of that era.
However, this is only a minor beef, the music is quite good in spite of it all.

So, if you are in the mood for a good musical drama....look no further than THE IDOLMAKER. You won't be dissapointed. :: tu ::

Brazil-- Terry Gilliam directed it -- Its hard to describe and I still dont fully understsnd it-- dont see the tv version though the endings krap in that version(the movie has a sad weird ending) I would recomend any film he's directed
 
I recommend Session 9 for Silent Hill fans. Miniscule budget, but chilling nonetheless. And, while I may be preaching to choir on a Buffy board, Ginger Snaps is still way too obscure for my liking. It's a terrific film. War of the Roses has Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas before he was the punchline to a joke about Zeta Jones, and I love it. I'm the only person I know who's heard of it though. It's about a divorcing couple who fight over a house, but it's really bitterly funny.
 
Oh, I like War Of The Roses.. And Heathers, my kind of dark comedy..

I have no idea which movies people know of.. My suggestion is as always Heavenly Creatures, don't know how known that movie is..
And Killing Zoe, a movie produced by Tarantino.. The idea seems a little like True Romance but the movies are quite different though. Feels a bit like a Tarantino movie though it isn't. Zed (Eric Stoltz) sleeps with a callgirl called Zoe, then he and his friends decide to rob a bank, where Zoe happens to work..
And Some of Matt Dillon's earlier movies, like Drugstore Cowboy, Rumble Fish (although you can't compare it to the book), The Outsiders.. And To Die For of course..

I know a lot of great "foreign movies" but I guess they're not that easy to rent anywhere..
 
I've been thinking about getting Killing Zoe SO many times but I've never got to it and I don't know why and now I'm all damning myself for not doing it! It seems cool.

Another movie tip from me is 'Bye Bye Blue Bird' by Katrin Ottarsdottir. And as the name of the director gives it away, it's a movie made in Island. I just got it on dvd. It's like Themla & Louise, two chicks decide to hit the road and never come back.

And I just HAVE to hype 'Slaves to the underground'
I'm not exactly sure why I love this movie so much and have seen it like 10000 times. It could be my 90's/grunge obsession/fetish but I'm just going to say that it's because this movie friggin rocks! :lame:
 
The Craft was a fantastic movie. I doesn't get mentioned a lot, but I think I've seen it eight thousand times. I freakin' LOVE Faruiza Balk.

On the Faruiza note, American History X was awesome. I love it loveitloveit. It's disturbing and truthful and just bloody amazing.

Donnie Darko was a freakin' piece of art. I love movies that trip my mind out and make me think of them long after I've watched it. Freakin' exquisite.

I love Donnie Darko and that kind of movies.
Which of course brings me to Mulholland Dr. I know many people don't like that movie but I do, a lot. I'm a big David Lynch fan.

i saw the exorcist when i was 8. and it didn't scare me (mostly because i was too young to unserstand any of it) But now it still doesnt scare me. My friends are terrified by it but i just found it creepy.
By the way The Ring is the SCARIEST film i have EVER seen. I nearly had a heart attack...for several months after🙂
 
The ring is absolutely brilliant. Both Japaneese and American versions. I saw the American one first and after seeing it, I was scared of my tv for several months. I couldn't sleep cause I was afraid it would all of the sudden turn on and start showing that short movie... The second time I watch that movie the tv all of the sudden turned off and I almost got a heart attack. I couldn't answer the phone for weeks after that.
 
when we came out of the cinema after seeing in i rang my friend's phones and said '7 Days' it was hilarious. they almost died of fright and now when something goes wrong with the tv we all get a little bit scared
