Your Favorite Apocalypse Movie

I was just watching "The Book Of Eli" last night, and it got me to thinking about the trend in "post civilization" movies that has been with us for so long, from older ones like "On The Beach" and "Panic In The Year Zero," up through the "Mad Max" and "Matrix" trilogies, and the latest, "2012," and "Knowing," to name a few, and I just wondered what your favorite one might be.

I prefer the old classics like "Panic In The Year Zero" myself, because of the quality of the acting involved, plus the fact that it at least offered a ray of hope that, despite everything, mankind and some degree of civilization will continue, no matter what may come. For that same reason, of the newer offerings, "2012" would be on my favorite list.

Then again, for the ABSOLUTE apocalypse presentation, the History Channel's "Life After People" is both very well thought out and interesting.

I like 28 days/weeks later, thats quite apocalyptic.

I love zombie movies. I watch every single one: Night of the Comet, 28 days later, 28 weeks later, the Resident Evil films, Planet Terror, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Night of the living dead, etc.

I watched 2012 a few weeks ago. I didn't think I was going to like it (the thought of the planet being the thing that kills us scares me) and I ended up thinking of it as one of the best movies ever made. I was on the edge of my seat and really cared about the characters.

Blindness. It's not really an apocalypse movie but it was on its way there since people around the world started randomly going blind and nobody knew how to stop it from happening.

I didn't like The Beach. I did love the book it was based on though (that usually happens, love the book and hate the movie or vice versa).

Independence Day is one of my favorite films. Seeing a massive attack on the Earth and the nations joining forces to take down their common enemy, that speech by Bill Pullman when he is rallying the troops, the interrogation scene with the extraterrestrial basically saying that he is going to kill them all, etc.

I am sure I left some great zombie films off of my list. I could probably right a book (or some really great metas) on all of the ones I've seen. If you have seen any send me the titles post-haste! I was going to watch Boy Eats Girl this week but ended up watching My Sisters Keeper instead (love Cameron Diaz as the mother trying to keep her daughter from dying of cancer). Has anyone seen Zombie Strippers? The trailer made me laugh with this exchange. "They're zombies!" "They're strippers!" "They're zombie strippers!"

What is The Road about?

I think, personally, that the cannibalistic, rabid zombies overrunning the world thing has been done to (pardon me) death, but I do have to say that Bill Murray in "Zombieland" was really great. It made the movie worth watching.

Does the M. Night film The Happening count as apocalyptic? I really liked it.

I am Legend with Will Smith is another great zombie film. How does he not have an Oscar? And as usual the scene that makes me sick with worry involves an animal in harm's way. In that film I was so heartbroken over that dog and in Dawn of the Dead I was right there with that redhead in wanting to rescue the dog.

The Terminator movies, Logan's Run, The Noah, Escape From New York, The Omega Man, When The Wind Blows, Children Of Men, The Road and The Stand, but that was a mini-series. 😀
