Your favorite fictional characters' gender

My favorite fictional characters tend to be men. I associate more with the men in my shows and even books than the women. I'm wondering why. I figure a good way to finding out why is to ask you guys about YOUR favorite characters and see what you all think.

So what do you guys think? And do your favorite characters tend to be of one sex or the other? Does it correlate with your sex? Why?
 
Hmm this is very interesting. Most of my favorite characters are men.

I like characters to have a lot of depth to them. This is something that I see in Spike and The Doctor which is why they are my favorites. So my liking them doesn't actually have to do with what sex they are.

Though I have noticed that I gravitate towards male characters that treat women like ladies as well. Such as Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files books. It makes the character very endearing, and that's probably something that I enjoy about his character as I am a woman.

I do find that I relate to male characters more than female characters though. I have more in common with them. I've never been very girly. When I was growing up all my friends were guys.

I'm going to be thinking about this for a while. I can already tell. 😀

I definitely relate more to female characters. I grew up reading Jane Austin and Charlotte Bronte and I'm still in love with Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Jasmine etc.

Then when I was introduced to Buffy in high school my whole world changed as I finally had contemporary female role models to relate to that were dealing with a lot of the same issues I was.

I've never been close to my mom or had mother type figures till I was in college though I'm pretty close to my dad and have always had really strong, admirable men in my life so that could have something to do with that.

I do relate to male characters as well though my strength and what gets me through the day are female characters like Buffy. I honestly don't see a huge difference between males and females to be honest when they are displaying admirable traits. It's only when males and females display negative traits that I start to see a difference.

My favourite characters tend to be female. I guess because I just usually find the female characters adorable so I favor them the most. For example, I think Tara is very cute and shy, and she's my favourite.

It's interesting you bring up the role model thing. I look up to my mom more than my dad, I think both of them are screwed up as hell... but growing up I could depend on her more than my dad. Maybe that's why I respond more to the men, because I'm still looking for that male role model my dad wasn't. I know that's why I tend to like male celebrities... Hm. Interesting...
 
Most of my favorite characters are women.

My favorite characters that are men are not the characters I associate with, but the ones I would like to have by my side.
 
I don't think it makes much difference to me. I like characters that are male and characters that are female pretty much equally. I don't care about gender, what matters to me is if I can relate to the character on some level.

Hmmm my favorite characters are a mix between men and women, but I find myself drawn into male characters like Xander and Chandler, who are sadly considered less than men because they're not macho or cool or badass and are unappreciated by the characters (and sometimes the fans). I relate to these characters so much, they're the real underdogs in TV shows.

With women I love independent female characters, who are leaders by nature like Buffy, Xena, Elliot from Scrubs, Lynette from Desperate Housewives. They're my favorite female characters. I especially love the strong female characters in Middle Eastern TV shows because there are so few of them and when they're written, they're really good, though sadly despised by the elderly in my family because they don't act like proper women. Meh.
 
Women. for the most part (of course there are exceptions) I gravitate towards strong independent women characters.
 
I don't think it matters to me. It can go either way. I love Buffy very much and I love Spike very much. And with other fandoms it's the same. While I don't love other fandoms' characters as much, it's the same. It doesn't matter to me if the characters is a male or a female. I love both for different and same reasons.
 
Interesting! My favorites are a mix of both. But when I was younger, they were almost exclusively men. Franny Glass was the first woman in fiction that made sense to me to the point where I could look up to her and see myself in her, and Buffy followed soon after. Nowadays it's a pretty even score, gender- wise.

My favorite characters tend to have characteristics in common with the most important people in my life. Scout reminds me of my mother...growing up in the rural south, very scrappy, knobby scraped knees, etc. My dad and Giles...literally cut from the same cloth, down to the last snark! 😉 My-sister-in law is Jo March, head strong with a little bit of rage thrown in! 😀 My husband, however is a combination of Angel, my man Spike and oddly...Riley! 😛
 
My favorite charecters tend to be female. I think this is because I tend to look up to them. Also I feel that I can relate to them more.
 
When I was younger I liked the male characters better for some reason, but I've always loved female characters too. Now I think most of my favorites are women because when it comes to their gender and how they're treated within a story, I find that really fascinating? I dunno. Generally I like a lot of characters of different genders though. My absolute favorites just happen to be women.
 
Almost all of the characters I look up to, relate to, admire, respect and root for are female. I'd never really noticed before, but looking back it has always been that way.

I genuinely look at male characters and think 'I wish I looked like that' rather than 'I wish I acted like that'.

'Cause those shows are often my favourite shows because they have amazingly well written characters where ALL of the characters are being allowed to be full and complete humanbeings (most of the time *cough* Cordelia being reduced to a horrible plot line *cough* ). And that's not something that's really common in television when it comes to women characters. So yeah, I tend to get excited when it happens.

That's a good point that most shows that are intelligent enough to write the female characters well also write the male characters well.
 
I don't have a favorite gender... It depends on the character. But I gotta admit there's usually more interesting male characters in fiction. I wish there was more Buffys and Cordys 😛
 
I prefer the female characters, almost exclusively (the two male characters I really don't mind reading from the point of view of are Cal Thompson and Hunter Braque from Scott Westerfeld's books).

For me, I guess it's just that I don't relate to a male mind... I commonly look at male characters and wonder what the heck they're thinking. I do that with female characters too, of course... but not as much. I more understand them and their hopes and dreams and motivations.
