Question Your favourite fan fictions

Ah! How can you love a show and not read fanfiction?! I'd go nuts if when the show ended, the characters truly ended too. Some people think that it's all terrible, but those people tend to not be looking hard enough or in the right places. Or, they're limiting themselves to canon-only pairings, thus limiting the amount of fic.

(Note- Some of these are NC-17 and I'm not sure if we're allowed to link to those, so I'll just give the names and authors)

Anyway, Phoenix Burning by Yahtzee is the best (and I'm not even a B/A shipper) I've ever read, but everyone has already heard of that one. So:

SHORT (for these I'm giving some info about their contents; for the longer ones I'll just let you google the fic rather than try to summarize)

Pheonix Burning is the first fic I put on ANY rec list :)
Well, mine are all Spuffy with a teen rating, but here they are:

Never Have I Ever by Coquine ([Never Have I Ever, a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer fanfic - FanFiction.Net) Set in S6, during Older and Faraway. The SG and Spike decide to play a game. It's absolutely HILARIOUS, and very well written.

Sideways by GoldenUsagi (Sideways Chapter 1: Problems, a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer fanfic - FanFiction.Net) What if, sometime in the 70's, Angel lost his soul again? Spike split from their gang? Buffy wasn't the slayer? In this fic, Buffy is an ordinary college girl. Spike is a vamp. When someone tries to kidnap Buffy, her extremely wealthy father hires a bodyguard. Enter Spike. (Psst, Buffy DOES become the slayer later on in the fic) It's an absolutely AMAZING strory. Even though it's AU, it's very realistic and true to the characters. With 94 chapters, it's full of character development and plot twists. The best spuffy story I've ever read. 😀

Surfing With Spike by Elven-Princess88 (Surfing with Spike Chapter 1: Surfing, a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer fanfic - FanFiction.Net) Set in Early S6. What happens when Buffy and Spike discover the entire Buffy fandom? Fanfiction, forums, chatrooms, dvd's, everything. They buy the dvd's, but watching their future won't hurt anything... Will it? Very funny and entrancing story, also very sweet and cute.

Sweetest Sin by Jules.btvsfan (Sweetest Sin Chapter 1: Aftermath, a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer fanfic - FanFiction.Net) Set in S4, right after Something Blue. Giles needs Buffy to keep Spike hostage in her dorm room for a couple of days. But what happens when the spell seems to have some residual effects on their feelings for one another? Very adorable story, the very best S4 wise.

The two that come to mind immediately are "Moving On," and "Keep On Moving," by Cass at the Spuffy Realm. (There are a few others that I have downloaded over the years, but since they almost all came from the now defunct "Vampire's Kiss" site, there's no real point in mentioning them.) Both are sequels, or at least continuations of, the "Girl In Question" story line, which we know now wasn't real anyhow, but they're still good stories and, among other things, beef out the characters of the Immortal and Illyona (sp?) the female CEO of the Raman branch of W&H.

I used to read fan fiction some years back - quite a few years back actually - but got rather fed up with unfinished ones and those who start out good then goes stale after a few chapters. After my interest for the Buffyverse grew stronger again, I've been attempting to read some fics, but apart from "Phoenix Burning" I haven't really found much that has caught my eye. I got some good recommendations from Kean a while back (thanks!) and have decided that I'd rather read pieces other people recommend than spend time wading through all the annoying sex scenes out there. So thanks for sharing, I'll make myself a list.

Xander/Spike (those are mostly NC 17)

Sidelines by Anna S: An alternative Season 4. Instead of Willow falling for Tara and realizing she's gay, it's Xander who goes through the coming-out drama as he falls for Spike. Everything Anna S. writes is amazing, and this is no exception. Great characterizations, great plot, great everything. I bow at her feet in awe, as always.

Divided by Jackson; When the demon Toth uses his magic stick to split someone in half (in the Season 5 episode "The Replacement"), he hits Spike instead of Xander, and Spike is split into his vulnerable side and his demony side. His vulnerable side falls in love with Xander. (The sequal Two's Company and its sequal Male Bonding are way better than Divided, this story is so funny and awesome! You'd really love it!)

Sock Puppets by Shadowcast A couple of years post-NFA, Xander is living a very ordinary life in L.A.. He has a job, an apartment, a boyfriend. However, the arrival of a figure from his past (okay, who am I kidding"”you all know it's Spike, right?) throws everything into question. (This one is considered the best Spander author, even those who hate the pairing enjoy her stories. I recommend all her fics.)

It's great that you guys want to share the fan fictions that you love, but can you please make sure you don't post links to adult fan fictions that aren't suitable for people of all ages 🙂

I've read fan fiction before, just none related to BTVS. Some of the fandoms I belong to have huge fan fiction followings, but they kinda scare me.

Okay, now for fics that aren't shippie, here's my favorite fic EVER! The best I've ever read so far:

Cuckoo in the Nest by liz_marcs: Wow, this fic takes us inside the head of Xander's father: Tony Harris. We get to see Xander's life and the events of canon through the eyes of his father. New idea of a fic, amazing characterization, amazing plotting. I especially liked how she made Tony look like a person and not like how many portray him as Mr. Evil Rapist.

A Short Rest by antennapedia: Xander and Giles (friendship), gentle and lovely. Great undercurrents of Xander's questionable home life, of his hunger for Giles' attention, as well as Giles' protective nature shown in gentle, small kindnesses.

I've collected my favorite Xander/Buffy fics, friendship or romantic here, if you guys are interested. 🙂

Lyri agrees: The Approved Mode of Payback and Sock Puppets are two of my all time favorite fics.

You should read Sidelines, it's my all time favorite Spander fic.

ubi4soft agrees: i'm reading sweet revenge right now

I hope you enjoy it, it's a wonderful story!

did! 't was the second spander fic i've ever read (first being Sock Puppets long time ago)
There is a distinct lack of Bangel in this thread and it simply won't do. 😀

I'm going to post a few of the lower rated Bangel fic gems that I have found. If anyone wants recs for higher rated fic drop me a pm and I'll sort ya out 😉

Teapot by Jo It's a simple story of time, memory and second chances. Like all of Jo's fics, it is a truly lovely read.

Ten Observations on Being in Love With a Human by Kairos This is possibly my favourite story on this list. Kairos shows a little snapshot of what life could have been for Buffy and Angel if they ever got that chance of Happily Ever After.

(If you can't view K's LJ you can also read her story Here)

Elegy for a Fallen Heroine by HonorH This a post-The Gift fic where The Fang Gang come to Sunnydale in the wake of Buffy's death. I've read alot of post-The Gift fic and this one comes in at number two for me, second only to Pheonix Burning (for obvious reasons i.e. PB being a contender for best Buffyverse fic ever!). I just love how their shared love of Buffy unites everyone. It's sad but in the really good kinda sad.

Inàon by Kerry B A young girl comes to L.A. too find the truth about who she and enlists the help of Angel. I adore this fic, it's just lovely. ( BTW,The young girl aint Buffy 😉)

I'm sure there are loads more I haven't even thought of so I could be back with more 😉

I liked the fan fic, ' From Beneath You it Devours ' by Joyce Summers. It is probably on page 7 or 8 of In The Watcher Diaries by now.

Some of the best fanfiction I've ever read for the Buffy realm comes from Nothing Like the Sun. It's all Spuffy or Spike-centric, obviously, so if you're looking for some great Spuffy fics, that's the place to go. Keep in mind the rating as you look over the fics--if they're NC-17, there will be a warning on it!

Some of my favorites from there are:

Getaway
Site Summary: Spike and Buffy on a road-trip of self-discovery. Okay, okay, it's been done before and since, but this is Cousinjean's version, so you know it's gotta be good. And it is. Romantic, and funny, and angsty, and wonderful. Give it a read! (Romantic drama)
Rating: R

When Eternity Lies in the Balance
Site Summary: Even about a year after I first read it, this multiple-award-winning story remains one of my favorites. After Buffy's death in "The Gift," the Powers That Be call on Spike to do them a favor to bring her back. This fic is full of magic, sacrifice, loyalty, determination, strength, and love. (A bit of everything ... drama, humor, angst, adventure, suspense, but most of all romance)
Personal Opinion: This one is beautiful, but it writes a very selfless, giving unsoulled Spike. If you don't buy that, you probably won't like. I thought it was wonderful!
Rating: R for Language

There are so many more on that site worth reading! If you're a Spike fan and you love fanfiction, you'll adore these! (Underlined words are links!)

Twilight/Buffy Crossover

This is the funniest thing I've read this week.

A short one-shot by amyxaphania over at Live Journal.

Note: I can not link to he LJ because some of her stories do contain adult content, although this one does not.

Stupid, Shiny Vampires

“It’s not him, don’t be stupid Rosalie.”

“It is! It’s got to be.”

“Why on earth would he be here, of all places?” The brawny man frowned, eyes narrowed.

“Look at his hair,” Rosalie said, pointing. “It’s him, I know it is. Go ask him for me? Please, Emmett?”

“Why can’t you ask him yourself?” The man – Emmett – replied.

“Please,” the blonde scoffed, “I ca-”

Spike watched the conversation with mildly disguised interest. The couple had caught his eye as soon as they’d walked into The Bronze. They were statuesque, almost too good-looking, and their skin glittered iridescently under the flashing lights. When they’d started talking loudly and gesturing in his direction, his curiosity was well and truly piqued.

“Oh joy, it’s Captain Peroxide.”

Spike rolled his eyes when he heard Harris’s voice, turning his attention away from the obscenely attractive couple in the corner.

“Nice to see you too, Whelp,” Spike smirked, taking a long drink of his beer.

“What do you want, Spike?” Buffy said, as she sat down on one of the stools, Willow, Tara and Anya doing the same.

“What do I want?” Spike sputtered. “You lot came and sat at my table. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I was busy eavesdropping.”

He turned his attention back to the couple in the corner, and winked when he caught the blonde’s eye.

“Oh my god,” Anya’s jaw dropped.

“Woah,” Buffy was stunned speechless.

“Holy crap,” Willow’s eyes widened.

Spike swivelled in his seat, turning to see what had caught the girl’s eyes.

A man and a woman, walking in the direction of the couple he’d been watching.

“It should be illegal to be that good looking,” Buffy said.

Spike’s jaw clenched.

“Alice, Edward,” Emmett greeted the new arrivals.

“Alice!” the blonde shrieked, “Look over there. Tell me that’s not William the Bloody. It is, isn’t it?”

The group of ridiculously good-looking people turned as one to look at Spike.

Spike smirked. So they’d heard of him, had they? His smirk faded when he heard Buffy begin to hyperventilate.

“Ohmigod, ohmigod, they’re coming over here,” she chanted.

“Hi!” the little one – Alice – said, chirpily. “You’re William the Bloody.”

“I go by Spike now, pet,” he smirked.

“I told you it was him,” the tall blonde said, crossing her arms in front of her and raising her eyebrow at Emmett. “Pay up.”

Spike frowned as he caught the group’s scent. It was odd, intoxicating, and definitely not human.

“You’re right,” the other man - the one with bronze coloured hair – said, apparently reading Spike’s mind. “Alice?”

Alice closed her eyes, and seemed to be concentrating on something.

“Oh, this is good,” she said, giggling. “We can tell him, and his friends, it’ll be quite interesting.”

“We’re not his friends,” Xander put in.

“Thank god for small mercies,” Spike muttered. “So, what sort of demon are you lot?”

“They’re demons?” Willow yelped.

“They can’t be,” Buffy said, “I mean, they’re so…so…shiny.”

“We’re vampires,” Alice said.

“No you’re not,” Willow said, immediately.

“We are,” Alice nodded.

“But…vampires are all with the grr and the argh and the ugly,” Willow replied, frowning.

“Hey!” Spike put in, indignantly, liking the situation less and less.

“If you’re vampires,” Buffy said, her slayer instincts not reacting in the slightest, “then show us your vamp faces.”

“Oh, we don’t have those,” Edward said, grinning. “Nor are we affected by crosses, holy water, stakes through the heart or sunlight.”

“Sunlight makes us sparkly!” Alice chirped.

Spike frowned. “Let me get this straight. You want us to believe that you’re vampires – but crosses, stakes, holy water and sunlight do nothing?”

“That’s about the short and short of it,” Emmett replied. “You could have a go at beheading us, that would do the trick. Kinda.”

“I don’t understand,” Anya whispered loudly, “they’re not vampires if none of that stuff works on them.”

“Too right,” Spike scoffed, “and sunlight makes you sparkly? We’re expected to believe this?”

“Well… yeah,” Rosalie said, her arched eyebrows raised.

Spike crossed his arms over his chest and stared at Edward. “If you’re vampires, then you’re not very good ones.” Go away. You’re making Buffy drool.

Edward flashed Spike a grin, his teeth glinting. “I beg to differ.”

“Yeah?” Spike slid off the stool, slipping into game face. “How about we head outside an’ see who’s the best vamp, then, eh?”

“Hey! No fighting!” Buffy turned to look at the Cullens. “You’re all way too pretty to be evil, and Spike is, well, impotent so can’t we all be friends?”

She ignored Spike’s annoyed ‘Hey!’ and barrelled on. “I mean, look at me, I’m the vampire slayer and I’m not making with the stakage,” she paused. “Although you said stakes don’t work on you, so that wouldn’t really be at all productive… do they really not work? Can I try?”

Emmett puffed his chest forwards and spread his arms wide. “Have at it.”

Buffy grabbed a stake from her purse and aimed it at the big vampire’s heart. The stake crumbled into splinters as it made contact with his chest.

“Woah,” Xander said, eyes wide. “Guess you weren’t lying.”

“That was wicked cool,” Buffy grinned, looking down at the splinters in her hand. “You’re like, the coolest vampires ever!”

Spike snorted. “I don’t bloody well believe this.”

“Can you do anything else?” Anya demanded. “If you’re special vampires, shouldn’t you be able to, I don’t know, go poof or move objects with your eyes?”

“I can predict the future,” Alice grinned. “And Edward can read minds.”

“Wow,” Willow said. “That’s so cool.”

“Dru could predict the future,” Spike said, pouting. “And she read minds, too.”

“Our brother controls emotions,” Emmett said, enjoying the attention that was being lavished upon him.

“That’s called thrall, you git,” Spike said, teeth clenched.

“And I’m incredibly beautiful,” Rosalie finished, with a toss of her hair.

“Dru said I was pretty,” Spike commented. No one replied, their attention focused solely on the shiny vampires in front of them.

“This is just bloody perfect, this is!” Spike all but shouted, a few moments later. “You lot have hated my kind for years, then these pathetic excuses for vamps come along and everything’s hunky dory? Well I’m not having any of it. When they kill you with their…their…shininess, don’t come crying to me!”

“Jeez, jealous much?” Buffy said, and turned back to Edward, whose skin was sparkling under the disco lights.

Spike glared, and stormed out of the Bronze, leather duster flapping at his feet.

Stupid, shiny vampires.

Haha thats great fun :p
London Calling by Shadowcast: Shadowscast writes a wonderful, believable Xander and you can just see it in the first scene of the fic where Xander and Buffy argue over Spike's AR. Some writers go very mellow with Xander sometimes while others make him go over the top with his Spike hate, but her Xander has a mix of each, he hates Spike but will do whatever he can to make Buffy happy. Of course, other than her Xander characterization, her plot is very intriguing and pulls you in. One of the best Spander fanfic.

One of the best long, plotty Spuffy fics posted in a while is Imitation of a Man by darkapple. It's completed at over 300,000 words, and is currently being posted daily over at LiveJournal.

Author's summary:

The events of “Dead Things” plunge Buffy and Spike, via time travel, into Spike's human past in an experience that transforms Buffy's view of him. The action begins with Buffy's return to the police station alley where, minutes before, she left Spike beaten and bloody.

Really well-written and incredible attention to detail, I really recommend it.
