Ah, first love. 🙂 It's so weird how the story of my first love played out.
In 9th grade, I knew one of my best guy friends had a crush on me. I liked him too, but I was afraid of ruining our friendship. He was one of the few guys I felt I could talk to about anything. So, I really wanted to remain friends. Yet, he would always ask me to dance with him during the slow dances (I miss high school dances), and I always felt something with him.
In 10th grade, I was still afraid that if we started dating, our friendship might get ruined. So, I covered up my feelings (silly me). Then, it wasn't until he asked out this other girl to our semi-formal, when I was sure he was going to ask me out, that I felt sick to my stomach. I realized I was in love with him and that I was so stupid for trying to ignore it or push it aside. Sounds like a character I know all too well. 😉
The summer before my junior year in high school was interesting. We flirted, talked, and I desperately wanted him to ask me out. I'm not the kind of girl who will ask out a guy. Then, the school year began. He was still one of my best friends, who I could talk to about anything, but I wanted more now. I was older and wiser, and felt our friendship wouldn't get ruined if we took the next step. Our friends always noticed something between us too, even others who weren't in our group. However, a few months into the school year, he asked out this girl who always made it known that she liked him. She even asked me if I liked this guy, which of course I denied but she saw right through me. To make matters worse, our friends said in front of both of us that he should have asked me out. I pretended like it didn't bother me, but secretly I was crushed, especially when I thought something would happen.
They ended up dating until the end of high school. And the whole time, I was jealous because I knew I was in love with him. Yet, he was still one of my best friends. We still hung out, talked, and laughed. He would even sometimes sit with me and our group, instead of with his girlfriend, and she would always give me this evil look when she saw us together. She knew there was something between us. I felt guilty, but at the same, I loved being around him, even if we were still just friends.
I never told this guy the extent of my feelings for him. College drifted us apart and also allowed me to move on. Yet, we'll still talk every now and then. And although we were never together, I learned a lot about myself through the experience. 🙂
