Question Your Ideal of Love = Your Favorite 'Ship?

Is my ideal love, for me, Bangel? Absolutely not!

Actually, I don't think any of the Buffyverse relationships are my ideal.

If I was lucky enough to have a relationship that mirrored one of my ships it would be that of Pacey and Joey from Dawson's Creek. The way they love each other, that's me, in every way possible. The banter, the uncertainty and the brutal honesty, the way they challenge each other in every aspect and mostly how two incredibly gaurded people who use humour as their armour trusted each other enough to show how truly vulnerable they are and were twice as strong for it. When I picture my happily ever after, that's what I see.

*fingers crossed I get it* lol

I do believe in initial attraction, but first becoming good friends before anything else happens.

I guess that sort of fits Cangel? At least Cordy was kinda attracted to Angel when she first saw him, but it took years til actual feelings developed.

As for Weslah...sleeping with the enemy is kind of hot. And in real life I did have a 'relationship' that resembled Weslahb to a certain degree.

So for me it's true?

If I look outside the Buffyverse, I think it's even more obvious....other pairings I like include Barney/Robin and Mulder/Scully for example, and they all fit the Cangel pattern in a way.

I totally agree, Kean. I LOVE Pacey and Joey. They're definitely one of my all time favorite 'ships, ever. They were so perfect so each other. I just re-watched Seasons 5-6 last summer, and totally reaffirmed my love for that 'ship. I love them more then ever.

I don't believe that there is, or ever could be, an "ideal" relationship, simply because every love affair is in and of itself, new and unique. I could never love my wife in the way that I loved the first girl that I ever loved, and I wouldn't want to. Beyond that, I don't really know how to explain what I mean, except to say that love should always be fresh and exciting, not the same thing every time you experience it.

Agree. That said, there are a few factors that I think needs to be in place for a relationship to work out: Mutual trust and mutual respect.

They are second only to Bangel in my OTP list. I just loved how they challenged each other and dear God, the banter! If I ever had to describe my type it is personified by Pacey Witter 😉

Everyone has "The List", things you would like in a possible love interests, sometimes you find someone with some of these attributes and other times you find someone you weren't even looking for. What is certain is that you will never find someone that ticks every box and if by some weird twist of fate you do, I am almost certain you will get bored real quick.

As far as this thread goes I think it is almost impossible to say you would like a love like any of the ships displayed in the show because they were all so damn tragic! I don't see how you could wish for that for yourself.

That's true to a certain extent, but until someone comes up with some sort of device for seeing into the future, every relationship has the potential to end tragically. Would you have denied Willow and Tara the joy that they shared, even if you KNEW that it would end in Tara's death? Or Xander and Anya. Would you have wanted Buffy and Angel not to have loved each other because that love would result in the return of Angelus, forcing Buffy to have to kill, not the monster, but the man who she loved? At the time that Season 2 ended, Buffy had no idea what would happen the next year. Do you think that she even for a moment ever regretted loving Angel during that summer she spent alone in Los Angeles?

It's the same way in real life. People meet, fall in love, and form a life together, only to have the husband killed in an auto accident, or the wife contract an incurable disease. If we deny love simply because it MIGHT end badly, we can never love anyone, ever. And if we compile some "list" of cans and can'ts as a criteria for a prospective mate, there's a better than average chance that we will lose out on something really wonderful.

Like Kean said, (girl, I need to stop starting posts with that phrase!) I don't think anyone should or would want a love that completely mirrors anything from the Buffyverse and most of the 'ships I love are also full of pain and heartbreak before the happy ending.

My favourite 'ships are Lucas/Peyton from OTH and Syd/Vaughn from Alias and it's not so much 'how' the relationship goes but what it is that MAKES that relationship. With both, there's always something getting in the way and there's so much pain and disappointment but in the end they find each other again, always. So I guess that that is what I love about them - the feeling of hope that they give me. And that's why I still and always 'ship Bangel because there's hope there. And that's all I'd ever wish for myself, to be able to withstand a load of crap and come out of it the other end with the person I love. Wow, I make myself throw up - sorry guys! ha!

Although, I'd go through everything that Buffy, Peyton and Syd did if I had Angel, Vaughn or Lucas at the end of it! 😀 - Just so you know no matter how slushy I get, I'm still hopelessly shallow beneath it all! 😉

All of this is a given but like you said if we lived our lives with the knowledge that life happens to us we'd never have relationships. Most people I find, even if they don't want to admit it, are dreamers. We all of these secret hopes and wishes that are equal parts corny and improbable but I wouldn't be without them.

I know whatever comes I'm going to face a fair amount of tragedy and happily ever after doesn't actually exist BUT, when I do indulge in a fiction inspired dream I tend to piggy back those that made it, in the end.

I just feel that if even your ideals are huanted by tragedy, then what chance are you giving yourself in the real world?

It's silly and hey call me old fashioned, but if you are gona have ideals, I think they should actually be ideal.

I disagree, I don't think that ideals should have to be ideal. It sounds contradictory I know, but in my view, "perfect", doesn't exist and is overrated. I couldn't imagine myself meeting someone who is absolutely perfect in every way, we fall in love, get married and never have any problems ever. The idea of it makes me cringe. Real life isn't like that, and I wouldn't want it to be. "Perfect" is too nice, too simple, too easy. Love isn't nice, simple or easy. It's fun and scary and bonkers and confusing. The perfect kind of love is one that is imperfect. Flaws make everything more interesting and personal. "Perfect" is overrated, and I'd take brilliant imperfection over it any day.

I didn't clarify myself there, my apologies. When I said ideals should be ideal I was referring specifically to the topic of this thread and having your idea love mirror that of one of the relationships on the show. Nearly every relationship has ended in the death of one of the people in that relationship. To me it just feels like wishing for pain.

I'm not interested in perfect either, the ship that I said I did admire (Pacey/Joey) was extremely flawed, they hurt each other alot and it took years for them to figure out that they were suppossed to be together. Those are the kinds of imperfections I would "hope" for though, normal everyday people screwing up borne out of miscommunication, self esteem issues, different beliefs and the physical distance beween you.

I'd take that anytime over murder, deatha and curses.

I suppose what we really should be asking is are we basing the answer on the actual emotion shared or by what happened in the relationship?

Ah, I see what you mean now. And I agree with you.

I think that if you do connect to a ship because it is your ideal of love, then it's all about the emotions shared, not the actual events. I connect to Buffy/Faith because I love the natural banter between the two, the ease at which they relate to each other, and the deep bond that they share, and the fact that even though both has hurt the other, they'd do anything for each other. I'd like to have a love like that one day. However, I don't wish for a love that involves my partner betraying me, going evil and me having to stab them into a coma. 😉

"traces of nut" LOL
This thread needs to lighten up. 😀

Hah. Well anyway. MY fav 'ship is Keri (Kean+Lyri), and it's EXACTLY my ideal of love. <3 😉

(But who knows, it looks like Flannix is starting to take over 😀 )
