Your Local Food

Since I'm pretty hungover today (after drinking wine out of classy plastic wine glasses while playing on the swings last night - another story for another time), I have food on the brain. I get very hungry in the morning.

Anyway, the point is, I'm always super interested in local food even though I don't get to travel very much. I particularly liked pyttipanna/pyttipannu from Scandinavia -

Which is potato, onion, and sausage, cooked together with a fried egg, if I remember correctly.

What is your local favourite from your part of the world? Give me gratuitous descriptions. 😉

Well, I live in Southern Germany and we have this food called "Maultaschen". I think in English it's called Swabian pockets or German ravioli.
It's meat wrapped in some kind of noodle dough and it's fricking delicious! Had it yesterday.

I don't know much about food from around the world, but I can talk about some French Canadian food!

We have the "tourtiere", which is basically a pie but with ground meat inside (usually wild game or ground beef), mixed with stuff like mashed potatoes and onions. It is often eaten with home made ketchup.

Then there is "ragout de patte de cochon" which is a delicious ragout made of meatballs, porc, chicken and the best part, pigs feet!!! (yes sounds gross but it is surprisingly tender). It is almost always eaten with mash potatoes and some type of vegetable.

And finally, another meat oriented dish, we have the sea pie (which will feed like 40 people). It is a dish made with some type of huge crust, than inside you fill it with potatoes, wild boar, wild deer, some type of wild bird, or really any other type of wild game. You can also make it with porc,beef, chicken etc. but it's much better with wild game. Everything simmers in the crust (I think you add some type of gravy to it too), and tadam! you have a full meal. I couldn't find a good picture, because I think sea pie is the slang we use here, but there's another name they use in Quebec (where I think it originates).

As you can see, pretty much all traditional Canadian meals involve meat and potatoes, those are all winter meals and well, that's pretty much all we use to have during winter.

A classic breakfast in Georgia would be sausage, ham, or bacon (your choice) eggs cooked your favorite style (usually scrambled) cooked in the same skillet as the meat, God's gift to mankind and the reason that Southern men are so much more manly than other men and Southern women are so much sexier than the women anywhere else(this is a scientific fact, verified by the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia) GRITS. Add to that a couple of biscuits soggy with butter and coffe strong enough to dissolve the spoon that stirs in the sugar.

It's not technically "local" (more "trans-local", really), but there's a huge Lebanese community in the Detroit area. Middle Eastern cuisine is my favorite stuff to eat, and so much of it is available locally: Hommous (I make mine at home! I was going to post a picture, but the site won't let me), falafil, labneh with ice, ghalaba, lamb...

Being surrounded by so many lakes, I love incorporating as much seafood into my meals as humanly possible.

I'm from England so for me it's a full English, that has to include blackpudding, bacon, sausage, fried/scrambled egg, eggy/fried bread, toast, beans, plum tomatoes, hash browns... think that's everything.

More locally, in my town of Bolton, we love pasty barms (bap/muffin/roll etc), it's brilliant, although most people in England thinks it's incredibly weird to have savoury on savoury.

Also, in Wigan, you can get a wigan kebab, which is a pie on a barm, they obviously plagiarised our idea.

I live in Berlin and what I like most is the ton of Vegetarian/Vegan places here. You can literally replace any meat by something else. My favourite are vegetarian burgers
