So, we spend a lot of time on here talking about what we don't like about Joss' shows. We criticise his work because we care for the characters like they're our own friends, and because the stories Joss has created we care so much about. This is to be expected, because as I always say; part of being a good fan is being a good critic.

But...how often do you think about how much you love his work?

Say you had the chance to meet Joss; what would you say? Would you ask a question? If so, what would it be? We all love his shows. Here's your chance to say why you love his work so much.

I started this thread because I have been on this letter-writing kick lately, and I have been thinking about writing a good old-fashioned fan letter to Joss (I know - lame).

So, if there's enough response to this thread, I'll print it out and send it to him along with my letter.

It's been tough what's been going on lately for him, I'm sure, what with the cancellation of Dollhouse and the premature Twilight reveal. Now's our chance to write to him and tell him how much we love his shows and why.

So, if you could say one thing to Joss, what would it be? It can be a question or simply a statement. It doesn't have to be a long answer, just honest 🙂

If I got to meet Joss, I'd say this:
Mr. Whedon, I would like to thank you. You made my high school years so much more bearable and lessened the pain of feeling like an outsider when you created "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel", and I don't think I will ever find a show that I love as much as these two shows (even though "Glee" comes close!). The characters you created and the stories you told on these shows connected with me on such a deep emotional level, and they have helped me through some rough times in my life. Thank you a million times. Even if I didn't always agree with the direction you took the characters, I respect your work and the stories you've told through these characters.

Hey Joss! Thanks for being that director guy who always makes me laugh! ha ha BtVS made my life all that better and I thank you for that too. I appreciate writers who don't dumb it down but instead ask a lot from their viewers. That's how I've always felt about each project you've been a part of. As a viewer, I know when something is made out of love and a desire to not only entertain others but to entertain those who created it. Thank you for caring about what you create instead of churning out lame commercial money makers! I'll always have Buffy to lift me up and make life a little more fun and entertaining... and that means a lot. I'll also have a place like Buffy Boards where we all have at least one thing in common. That one thing that connects us is the love for not just a show, but a world. A world vastly different then our own but yet so vastly the same....and that's where the beauty lies. Thanks for being well, so awesome!!!!
 
Hi Joss. I would like to say simple - thank you. Thank you for making this amazing show. Thank you for that amazing cast. You thought me stuff that no one ever had courage to tell me. You showed me the real world. You showed me that's not only sun and butterflyes, it's not only pink, it's hard, and sometimes we have to make decissions that we can't handle. You showed me that somewhere out there people are trying to survive, fighting their own demons. And the biggest thank you goes to Buffy's and Angels relathionship. It was beautiful. Loving. Hard. Full of tears, but smiles also. They teached me what love is. How hard, but in the same time, how beautiful it is. Thank you. You showed me a world like it really is, you showed me something our parents don't want to tell us when we are kids - the thruth.
 
Thanks, Joss. Thank you so much for never letting the thought of equality slip out of sight, even when it's as out of vogue as it's been sometimes during your career. Thanks for believing so much in the blonde who hits back that you managed to give us seven seasons of Buffy, the only tv-series I've ever bothered to watch every single episodes of, and one of two that I look forward to introducing to my sons. (For the record, the other one is M*A*S*H.)

As a feminist who's followed "Buffy" on and off since -99, whilst maturing from a student with the toothbrush and passport always within reach into a fairly settled mother of two, I could wax lyrical for ages about how brilliantly you manage to reach quite a wide audience. But I think I'll just settle for what I began with: Thanks.
 
No matter what anyone else might say - you excelled yourself with Dollhouse. Really and truly. It's a shame not enough people realised that but be happy knowing that some of us did.

Hi, Joss. I've never been obsessed with a show in my whole life like I am with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Seriously, sometimes I wonder how pathetic I am for daydreaming about Xander and writing fanfic featuring him, I'm not this type of person. TV shows come and go, once they're done, I move on. I just can't seem to move on from BtVS. And can't stop thinking about Xander. What did you do to me? 🙂 Oh, and thank you SO much for continuing the story, I'm not a comic book fan, but I'm enjoying S8 a lot. I'm also happy to know there'll be a S9. Keep the BtVS characters alive. Also, I'm so upset and mad that both Firefly and Dollhouse got cancelled, they were intelligent and gripping shows with rich characters and lovely twists. This is me saying thanks, and blaming you for my totally unhealthy Xander obsession.

Thanks Joss for giving me Buffy and Angel and thanks for all the friends I have made that also love the shows because without you I would not have them.

Also thanks for giving me an escape from life when it's been hard and an amazing world to delve into when I've needed it.

Keep going and never give up as your talent gives many people enjoyment. Love you loads!!

So Mr. Whedon, what is next?
Regardless of what it is, someone will state it is similar to something you have already done.
Take River Tam and the vampire slayer, the reavers and vampires. Even tenuous links like having Eliza as Echo, or the mind control theme.
As for new ideas?
The chances are you have loads to choose from, but try reading some of the 1,001 fan-fics as one of them may cause a spark that gives you another idea to run with.
An easier way to develop new ideas is to write music videos.

Should you decide to retire, so be it. As long as you and your family are happy, that is what matters.

What's up, man? You remember me? No? All right, it's okay. We only met the one time and I think that might have been a dream especially since I was in my underwear and the two of us were flying through the air. Still, maybe that did happen? Anyhoo, none of that matters right now. We have much more important matters to discuss and I'm not talking about healthcare. I've always thought your writing was pretty great. That being said, it isn't perfect. There's one tiny thing you need in order to make the next series you do so good no one will ever be able to top it.....and that's hire me to work with you on it. I can do it all, man. You have writer's block? No problem! I have so many ideas floating around in this head that it's hard to tell where one ends and the next begins. You need a solid actor to star in this show? I can do that too. I can promise you my performance as Winnie the Pooh in fourth grade was very well received. I even saw one girl crying (though this may have been because she was seven). I'm going to be honest with you, Joss. I need this gig bad. My career hasn't really taken off the way I wanted it to. I did have a talk show for a few months but then Jay Leno took it away from me (and he doesn't even use it!). So, what do you say new best buddy? Am I hired? Get back to me as soon as you can. After all, I believe it was Jesus who once famously said, "hire Revolver, my child, for it is he who will save us all." I'm paraphrasing, he may have said something slightly different about how someone else would save us or something but that seems a small detail.

Well, for one thing... there is very little time when I'm *not* thinking about how much I love Joss Whedon. And if I actually met him, I can see myself starting to cry, maybe, and not really being able to say anything. But ideally this is how it would go...

Joss Whedon, you are amazing. Your shows are amazing. I found Buffy at one of the hardest times in my life and that show may not have saved my life physically, but it sure did emotionally. Your shows are so much more to me than shows. The characters are my friends, the episodes are my religious texts. I'm not as big of a loony as I sound, but I ask myself all the time "What would Buffy do?" I even have a sweatshirt that says just that. And I love listening to your commentaries on the episodes because your eloquence astounds and inspires me. I've learned more about life from shows about spaceships and vampires than I have from 15 years of the "real" world. Oh, and also, whenever I feel like humanity sucks, I YouTube your Equality Now speech and it gives me hope. Thank you so, *so* much.
