As an English major I took a whole class on grammar, and did really well. Certain things are hard to remember and still trip me up, occasionally. That's why I run all my papers through grammarly.com before I submit them.

4, 11, 12 and 14 are the ones I have trouble with sometimes.
 
What does English major mean? Seems to be so many online that say that. This stuff is not English major stuff, this is primary school for English as a first language. I've just reached the point where, if I dont type it, it wont get posted. I tend not to be able to sit very long. Typos and all. Most can tell how well I am from how I chat online, haha. If I feel good, I will be articulate. If not... well Imma ozzie sheila babes.

Affect and effect - I mess this up ALL of the time. I remember being so upset about it in year 8, as someone pointed it out in a serious letter and 12 year old me was soooo offended haha. Scarred for life.

You study the English language as it applies to writing and you study literature. I'm focusing on writing so I study more story telling and creative writing courses. Grammar is just the basics that you need to know as a writer.
 
Now I wonder how often I get lose and loose wrong.
Have never really thought about it earlier and I probably just pick one of them randomly. lol

Have never been able to learn when to use 'to' or 'too' either.
Usually I just take the one that looks best.
Where and were can also be a bit of a problem for me. But it's often more clear which one looks and feels right.

Also think that I've a tendency to add an apostrophe on plurals.

The good thing is that I can lean back and blame all my mistakes on not being a native English speaker though... 😉

Thank you. Especially the one about the differences between I and me. And this is the first time I hear of "irregardless". The words I used to mix up a lot are "bare" and "bear" @Ethan Reigns has been my official typo catcher. 😀
 
My bad grammar comes from how quickly I'm typing my posts in work lol, and from a lifetime of speaking a very mangled version of English.
 
Why didn't number 13 include a bra? As that one item has been known to upset the concentration, especially if it is too tight or worn back to front.
Also it forgot to mention when to use passed or past? Should it be written that your car passed the sign or was the time right for it to be past.
Great fun can be had when you need to write in a story in English English for a publisher when using software that uses American English such as Microsoft word.
Should you wish to confuse the reader try using old English. When the letter f was used in place of an s commonly found on headstones. You will know the cemeteries that used that form of English as on cold nights you can often hear a gentle tapping when the moonlight is hidden by clouds; the occupier of the grave is spelling the words on his or her headstone correctly.

I had to look up enquiry vs inquiry earlier. En is a casual enquiry (asking a question), In is an official inquiry (a formal investigation). Learned something new! 🙂

Oh my gosh, I KNEW I WAS RIGHT! Damn you little squiggle line! I will never fall for you again.
Haha. "Irregardless will never be a valid word." But the Buffy Boards isn't telling me that it's spelled wrong. No red squiggly! What does it all mean??!!!???


Have any of you ever listened to the Grammar Girl podcast? I do sometimes when I'm stuck on something. She's pretty clear and concise.


My main problem is that I'm in love with commas. I overuse the crap out of them. That's what most of my editing is. Taking out commas. Ugh.
 
One that shows up on this forum all the time:

Cannon: A device for driving a projectile powered by an explosion
Canon: Following the rules of a universe created by an author and accepted as part of that universe (originally this was used to mean following the collection of church edicts)

(Note: In electronics, there are canonical filters which are defined as those having the minimum number of delay elements required to implement the function. The order of the function is the same as the number of delay elements.)
 
Some of the novels I've read have been amazing in how flawless most of it is, save the last few chapter which will be one misspelling and grammatical mistake after another (and sometimes getting the names of characters wrong, or even their species!). Apparently even professional authors need a good editor to help them (with presumably the last few chapters of such books turned in on the very last day without editing).
