Your preferred fanfic scenario?

Inspired by the lovely Kean, I have another question for you fanfic-reading crowds, namely: What is your preferred fanfic scenario? Pairing, timeline, canon, AU, short stories, novel-length fics, rating...? Who are your favourite authors?

As you can guess, about 99 per cent of my fanfic consumption consists of Bangel fics. I have a trusted canon of authors from whom I'll read anything (including Kairos, Sienna, taaroko, leni and Ares), but my hypothetical ideal fic is a short story set in BtVS season 2 or 3 (rated R *blushes*), no AU. I love it when Angel speaks Gaelic to Buffy (I don't speak Gaelic, so I don't cringe like Kean does when the author gets it wrong) and I have a huge weakness for season 3 fics in which they almost stop caring about the curse. Ahem. I hope there are no psychology majors around.

I seem to have a particular weakness for Post-Gift B/A stories but ones that take place years later or in other realities.

If I was to categorise what I really love would be B/A, NC-17 (sw) (I'm a grown up! Shut up!), post-S3 (I love my B/A canon, warts and all, and I hate it being messed with, even if it's to give a happily ever after), the Scooby gang goes to LA for some serious world savage.

What I really love is all the character's voices being true. There is nothing worse than character bashing.

My favourite authors are Jo, Chrislee, Kita, Gia, Ducks, HonorH, Yatzhee, Vatrixsta Cruden, Carlyinrome, Lynne, Glossolalia, Trixie Firecracker, tkp, Sienna and Seraphcelene.

There's loads more I'm forgetting but these are the people whose B/A voices, and BTVS fic in general, I trust and enjoy the most.

Hmmmmm... the pairings in fanfics that I tend to go for are Tillow (Willow/Tara) and Romione (Ron/Hermione). I think it's because those are my ALL time favorite ships EVER!

I don't really like AU for either, I usually like future situations and both NC-17. Yup, that's me, one year to go til that's actually legal, but whatevs. I like it, sue me. 😛

I like short or long, just as long as it's good, I'll read it. 🙂

I'm not sure I really have a favorite author... there are tons of fic I read and don't even know the authors name! Haha.

EDIT: Oh, and when I read Tillow fics, I like having some Xanya in there and maybe a little bit of Spuffy. That's always nice. And of course, Romione, I like Harry/Ginny there too. Sometimes I'll actually read some Harry/Ginny if I'm in the mood, but I usually just like my blonde/redhead couples. 😉

God, I'm SO out of the fic fandom now, I can't even REMEMBER the names of my favorite authors...the few that I had.

Now, if you were talking about...that other fandom I'm involved with, I could rhyme you off about a hundred different authors without even blinking. My, how times can change a person.

The fics I did/do read ('cause I like to go back to read my faves every now and then) where, obviously, Spander. NC-17 (I'm a grown-up too! STFU!) Post-Chosen and Post-NFA or, and this is what my favorite fic EVER is, AU. 'Repossession' goes AU from 'Hells Bells' and it's just so flawlessly written that I've read it dozens of times. It is, however, WILDLY different to the show, and takes a not insignificant amount of concentration to keep up with the plot. And it doesn't paint Riley in a particularly nice light. Or Angel, really, but for ENTIRELY different reasons.

I've never read anything in the human-AU section of the fandom, but I can't imagine that would be any different that what I'm reading now, lol.

And that reminds me of another guilty pleasure of mine: I enjoy the occasional Riley basher. Unfortunately, my favourite authors are much too mature to indulge me here (except Kairos in Let Me In). Sometimes, when I have a really bad day, I like to read a fic where Angel unexpectedly comes back to town and shows the Rilster who wields the hammer.

Well, if you ever want to read some pretty hardcore Riley bashing, and you don't mind reading Spander, then you should try 'Repossession'. But it's seriously hardcore bashing, and Riley is a complete bastard and deserves all he gets. And he gets A LOT!

Bashing is one thing I can NEVER get into in fic. It's actually my biggest turn off. It was enever really done in the show, not like it is in fic. There is nothing more jarring that being in the middle of a story and then suddenly Buffy leaps into a two page rant about how mean Riley was to her. WTAF?

It's not Buffy that does the bashing in this, it's Xander and Angel, because of what Riley did to Spike in the fic. Nothing's ever referred to as far as what Riley did or didn't do in the show, all the bashing is based on what happens in the fic, and Riley did some SERIOUSLY bad stuff to Spike in the fic, so he deserves all the bashing he gets...and everything else Angel does to him. 😀

I REALLY want to read this again, now. I'm going to hunt it out, lol.

I didn't mean basher in that sense of the word. I dislike OOC fics as much as the next rabid fan. I just meant I sometimes like fics in which Buffy leaves Riley for Angel and the former is befittingly devastated for a good while.

Excellent! Just remember, SERIOUSLY different to the show, and SERIOUSLY AU from the show. Pay major attention to the non-canon people introduced. They're really important.

I shall inform you about my progress and consult you if I need to be put back on my way 🙂 And I don't really mind AU as long as it's well-written, and from what I can tell from the little I've read already, that seems to be the case with Repossession.

Ugh, just what I needed - another obsession when my finals are in 6 weeks 😀

I don't like AU fic or fic with new characters. I also like the characters to be fairly representative of how they are in canon. As far as genre, I usually read Spuffy (and Dramione/Romione for Harry Potter), but sometimes dip into a bit of Bangel. I read stuff of any rating really, as long as it's written well.

Spuffy. Anything, really. I love canon, missing moments, AU, all-human AU... all-penguin AU (yes, that exists!) - anything.

I don't like torture or fics that unnecessarily hate on characters.

My favourite authors: Nautibitz (Queen of NC-17 fics), Anaross, Dampersandspoons, EnigmaticBlue, Kantayra, Addie Logan... But too many to list, really. My Delicious account has a lot of my favs (amyxaphania).

We're spoiled for great writers and fics in the Spuffy fandom; been reading fic for 3 years now and I'm still finding great stories I've not read before. Love it. 😀

I read Spuffy almost exclusively, and I prefer Slayer/vamp. I prefer longer plot driven fics, but there's nothing wrong with short stories too.

In this fandom, I generally read Spuffy. Occasionally I'll try a group fic (Truth or Dare ficlets are always so horrible, but fairly enjoyable when you're about to die of boredom 😛 ) or some random Spike/any character at all story... Or even a Darla/Angel, upon occasion.

I do enjoy game fics when I just want to read something fun and light, and I love really long fics (novel length) when they're done well. For example: The Spuffy fic Sideways. It had about 90 chapters, and it was AMAZING. I don't generally like AU (I really hate ooc characters), but it's interesting sometimes.

Overall, I think I'm the humor type. 🙂 I never, ever read angst, or anything with whompage. I hate whomp!fics.

Oh, and I like pg-13/T/15+, or whatever you want to call it!

I don't really have any favorite authors in this fandom, but I do in other fandoms, such as Harry Potter and iCarly.

In Harry Potter, it's pretty much the same. I really only read Lily/James though. In iCarly, I exclusively read Sam/Freddie.

I also read Psych fanfiction, but I'm pretty new to that scene, so I'll read it all with reckless abandon for a key 'ship! 😉

mayfever agrees: what are "whomp!fics"?

Whomp!fics are fics where the torture of a character is a main focus. Like, torture torture. Not mental torture.

It's more common in some fandoms than others. 🙂

I only read Xander fics. My favorite Spander fic, guilty pleasure is Xander turning into something different and trying to deal with the consequences -Spike is there to mock and later realizes that Xander is a freak just like him and learns to not mock him as much - best ones are Xander turning into a girl. There are a lot of Girl Xander fics, usually Spander, and I think I read every single one of them.

Now Xander/Giles. I love it being one sided love in which teenage Xander is crushing on Giles or the other way around but becomes serious after Xander graduates. My kink is Giles spanking Xander with a ruler after BB&B.

Buffy/Xander: I only like it post-Chosen or during S7 when both are older and more mature. They fit just great in these timelines.
