Candy List

10. .45

One of the best performances by Milla Jovovich, right up there with Leelo 😀

9. Running with Scissors
Kinda hard to say how I feel about this one, except that it's only on this list because my regular top 10 was full. It's so not a candy film, at all 🙂
Billedresultat for running with scissors
8. Happy Feet
Great, fun animation with fun music and a great (as always) Robin Williams in the funniest role of the film. After it came out, my friend and I quoted it for years.
Billedresultat for happy feet
7. Click
As you should know by now, I tend to still really enjoy the Sandler movies that others have given up on (though even I have foregone many of his 'recent' ones, like Blended and Jack & Jill) and this is yet another one. I'm well aware it's not amazing by any means, but it's funny, it's got eye-candy (Beckinsale), and even a few emotional moments that make me tear up. For my candy list, that's all I really need.
Billedresultat for click sandler
6. Silent Hill
I've heard mixed reviews on this and I think it often depends on whether you're a fan of the game or not; I've never played it, so I quite enjoyed the film. It's creepy, with a decent concept and a great child actress, a real rarity. It's on this list, however, because I've seen better from this genre (and from games turned into movies).

5. Just My Luck
More Lindsay Lohan for the cheap seats! 😛 (and some Chris Pine pre-DCU)
Billedresultat for just my luck
4. The Lake House
Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves proved to have great chemistry together back when they did Speed so it was only a matter of time before we got them on the big screen again. While this is nowhere near as good as their previous collaboration, it's still a great watch for anyone who's a fan of either/both of their work.
Billedresultat for the lake house
3. DOA: Dead or Alive
Total. Guilty. Pleasure. The acting is really bad, the effects are laughable and the fight scenes nothing to write home about. But y'know what? It's got hot chicks and a fun plot that's easy to follow. I've seen this at least five times, so far 😛
Billedresultat for dead or alive doa
2. When a Stranger Calls
Yes, the remake (obviously). I've never seen the original but actually really want to, since after reading the synopsis it seems that it's somewhat different from this one. Anyway, I just love this one. Another that my friend and I would constantly watch and reference (though not quote) back in the day of its release. It's got such an eerie atmosphere and it still makes me jump, even on a re-watch. I even enjoy the actress, though I've never been very fond of her in the past.

1. She's the Man
Oh, c'mon, who doesn't love this one? 😀😀😀

Holy crap how I love this film, let me count the ways! Nikki Reed is absolutely brilliant in this movie and Alec Baldwin ain't no slouch, either. I could watch it every day of my life and never be bored, I swear!

Once again I make no apologies for my love of M. Night's later movies. This one is just stunning and full of great performances.

Black Snake Moan
The first of 3 Timberlake films on today's list - weird. Anyway, I love this one. It should be obvious by now that I'm a Ricci fan, but Jackson steals this one, as he often does.

Alpha Dog
This was already a great movie, but Timberlake takes it several miles higher, which was surprising at the time. He'd done very little acting, and not really a lot of serious acting, but he's just amazing in this one; I totally believe his performance. He is also surrounded by great performances by Sharon Stone, Ben Foster and more.

Stay Alive
I would call this a guilty pleasure candy movie if I didn't think it was so much better than most people think it is. Every time I see it (which is a lot, last time was this year) I am continually impressed by the script, the acting, and the tense atmosphere. First time I watched it I was also actually familiar with the story behind the plot and that helped make it a lot more interesting. Anyway, yeah, I absolutely think this belongs on this list with the rest, even if no one else will agree with me 😀

Total mind-twister with a great cast. My favorite parts are actually the Timberlake and SMG stuff 😉

I like this whole Fave Movies Per Year for the 00s that @Puppet has going on, so I'm going to jump on the bandwagon, starting with:

Top 10 Movies (2000)

(I won't do a separate list for Guilty Pleasure Films because I don't believe in Guilty Pleasures - just love what you love, regardless of whether it's well-loved or how good/bad it is in quality!)
  1. Center Stage - I love this film for all its innocent 00s charm. Ballet is a sport a have a lot of respect for and I love that this film shows the good and bad side of. Plus it has an awesome soundtrack and the final ballet performance is amazing!
  2. Almost Famous - I am an absolute sucked for films based in the 70s and I love the gentle mix of humour and drama in this film, as well as the amazing soundtrack and the very sweet Coming Of Age story at its heart.
  3. What Women Want - I love Nancy Meyers films and even though Mel Gibson is a gross human being IRL, he has a lot of charm in this film and watching his character suffer through all the horrible (and justified) thoughts the women around him have about him is so much fun.
  4. Bring It On - greatly diluted by the ridiculously sub-par sequels, which is a shame, because the first film was an hilarious and surprisingly sharp look at class differences and fair play and it still holds up to today.
  5. Miss Congeniality - another film which still holds up, this movie is hilarious and smart and it validates women who compete in pageants without validating the pageant itself. After watching this film I was so disappointed to find out that the FBI doesn't exist in Australia because I so wanted to follow in Gracie's footsteps!
  6. The Emperor's New Groove - one of my favourite Disney films of this era, it's random and hilarious and so much fun!
  7. Gone In 60 Seconds - I have zero interest in cars but this movie makes me want to become a professional car thief! Funny, exciting and mostly brainless shenanigans, this film is so much fun to watch and I still love this movie to today.
  8. Scream 3 - I actually prefer this one to Scream 2. It's a fairly accurate parody of the film industry, touching on topics which seem even more relevant today, and it's a lot funnier and lighter than the previous two films.
  9. Vertical Limit - this is such a bad movie but it's adrenaline-packed, exciting and so much fun to watch. I still love it so much!
  10. Charlie's Angels - I recently rewatched this film and it's still a lot of fun (even if the sexism in the film is much more obvious these days). But Drew, Cameron and Lucy have great chemistry, it's a fun romp with a great soundtrack and it's still a really funny film.

Top 10 Movies (2001)
  1. Moulin Rouge - one of my favourite movies ever and one of the few films I would class as a perfect movie, this film is intense, fun, tragic and just makes me love film making and the wonders it can produce. The amazing sequences and beautiful music, combined with great performances and endearing characters all work to create an amazing viewing experience.
  2. Mulholland Drive - this movie is fifty shades of effed up and watching it is a total mind screw, but I love the performances, the themes, the weird, offbeat tone of the film and the way it leaves you completely stunned and unable to comprehend what you just watched. Just a really beautifully weird and bizarre film, with some standout performances and a malevolent tone which amps up the discomfort one feels watching this film.
  3. Legally Blonde - this is such a great film, Elle Woods is a fantastic character, completely subverting expectations and fighting to prove how intelligent and strong she actually is in a world where everyone judges her purely on her looks. This film still holds up today and is so fun and fresh and empowering. Love it!
  4. The Others - one of my favourite horror films, a good old-fashioned ghost story with some genuinely unsettling and creepy moments. This is one of my favourite Nicole Kidman performances, and I love that the movie has a tiny cast and a very contained story, making for a very claustrophobic feel which adds to the malevolence of the film.
  5. The Fellowship of The Ring - my fave film of the LOTR trilogy, I love the lightness, hope and camaraderie of this film. This is what epic film making should be, big, emotional and sweeping. Love everything from the performances, to the characters, to the cinematography, to the score. I feel that this is the film which should have won the Oscar for Best Picture instead of Return of The King.
  6. Josie & The Pussycats - this is such an underrated film. It was widely panned by critics when released because they seemingly missed the sharp parody in the film and the commentary on consumerism and dismissed it as a shallow and dumb film (which it isn't). It's actually really funny and a lot of fun to watch, the actors give fun performances (especially Parker Posey and Alan Cumming) and it has an awesome soundtrack!
  7. Bridget Jones' Diary - ahhh, this film is just two hours of pure comedy gold. Bridget is such a fun and entertaining character and Renee plays her so well! So many great lines and fun scenes and laugh-out-loud moments, mixed in with some genuinely sweet and emotional scenes.
  8. Crazy/Beautiful - this was my favourite film for years, mostly because I identified so heavily with the main character. It tells the story of a wealthy but deeply depressed and traumatised teen girl, Nicole, who falls for a poorer Latino student, and the difficulties that their class/race differences produce in their relationship, not to mention Nicole's self-destructive tendencies and the way in which they hinder her and her relationship. It's a really sweet (but intense) film and it has a fantastic performance from Kirsten Dunst in the lead, as well as a killer soundtrack.
  9. Don't Say A Word - stealing this from @Puppet 's list, I love this film. A great performance from the late Brittany Murphy and an interesting and intriguing premise, just a very entertaining film to watch.
  10. Life As A House - tragic and heartwarming at the same time, this is the film which showed that Hayden Christensen actually could act. It's just a beautiful film which really pulls at the heartstrings and tells a very bittersweet story of a father reconnecting with his son after being diagnosed with cancer.

Josie & The Pussycats is a great movie and The Others gave me nightmares. I never felt like watching Muholland Drive, I'm not a fan of David Lynch and his bizarre style, reminds me of Fellini, everything after La Dolce Vita is too weird for me.

I think that most of the best movies are heartbreaking one way or another, there's an underlying drama to be exploited and explored. Although I need light/easy movies from time to time, I have a taste for this "dramatic" and emotionally intense movies.

My first set of top 10 movies (two of my first 10 movies have Julianne Moore as protagonist, I'll add two more of her movies in the next top 10 😉):

1. The Three Colors trilogy: Blue, Red and White (1993-1994, Polish-French)
Refers to three movies with independent plots that however intersect with each other at some point. The three films are directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski. A symbol common to the three films is that of an underlying link or thing that keeps the protagonist linked to their past. Amazing movies with extremely touching plots, but it’d take too long to describe them. My personal favorite is Blue. Juliette Binoche is the protagonist and she has to deal with the loss of her husband and her child. If you'd like to be consider a movie connaisseur, you HAVE to watch there movies, they are simply masterful.

2. Blindness (2008, Brazil, Canada, Japan, USA).
It’s an adaptation of the 1995 novel of the same name by Portuguese author José Saramago about a society suffering an epidemic of blindness. It explores the natural phobia to an unknown “illness,” the way we treat those afflicted by something we don’t understand, how society disintegrates and how a new social organization arises. The book is better than the movie, but the movie is quite close to the original plot.

3. Arrivals (2016, USA)
Sci-fi movie... AMAZING
. When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team--lead by expert linguist Louise Banks--are brought together to investigate (they actually use software that real linguists use!!). As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers--and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity. It’s a MUST see movie.

4. The lover (1992, France, Vietnam, UK)

I think it’s an underrated movie, I cried like a little baby. Set in French Indochina in 1929, the film explores the erotic charge of forbidden love. Jane March plays a French teenager sent to a Saigon boarding school, while Tony Leung is a 32-year Chinese aristocrat. They become involved in an ongoing sexual relationship. However, they both know that their love is doomed. She comes from a troubled family that includes a mentally-disturbed mother and drug-addicted brother. And he belongs to traditional wealthy Chinese family that has arranged a marriage for him.

5. City of God (2002, Brazil)
It's a violent and intense movie, that I think that is amazing. It’s a sweeping tale of how crime affects the poor population of Rio de Janeiro. Though the narrative skips around in time, the main focus is on Cabeleira who formed a gang called the Tender Trio. He and his best friend, Bené, become crime lords over the course of a decade. When Bené is killed before he can retire, Lil' Zé attempts to take out his arch enemy, Sandro Cenoura. But Sandro and a young gangster named Mane form an alliance and begin a gang war with Lil' Zé. Amateur photographer Buscape takes pictures of the brutal crime war, making their story famous.

6. Children of Men (2006, British)
It portrays a dystopian world. A futuristic society faces extinction when the human race loses the ability to reproduce. England has descended into chaos, until an iron-handed warden is brought in to institute martial law. The warden's ability to keep order is threatened when a woman finds that she is pregnant with what would be the first child born in 27 years.

7. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006, Spain, Mexico)
Set during the Spanish Civil War period, it’s a haunting fantasy-drama detailing the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl who may be the mythical princess of an underground kingdom. Her mother recently remarried to sadistic army captain Vidal and soon to bear the cruel military man's child, shy young Ofelia is forced to entertain herself as her recently-formed family settles into their new home nestled deep in the Spanish countryside. The young girl soon ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun Pan. A very Del Toro movie style.

8. Head-on (2004, German)

Uff... This movie is at another level of greatness. 40-year-old Cahit is brought to German psychiatric clinic after attempting suicide and sets out to start a new life, even as he longs for drugs and alcohol to numb his pain. Sibel is young, pretty and, like Cahit, Turkish-German. She lives a lifestyle that is a bit too wild for her devout, conservative Muslim family and fakes a suicide attempt to try and escape them. But the incident brings shame upon her family, who insist that only marriage can save her. Sibel begs Cahit to marry her and he reluctantly agrees, perhaps in an effort to save her and to find meaning in his own life. Initially the two share an apartment and little else as Sibel sees other men and Cahit continues to have flings with his on-again, off-again girlfriend. Gradually, however, Cahit begins to fall in love with Sibel and she, in turn, comes to realize that she loves him - but not before an incident of jealous violence tests this fledgling romance. The ending is heartbreaking.

9. Interstellar (2014, USA)

It’s a science fiction film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan. Set in a dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive, the film follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for humanity. Matthew McConaughey is AMAZING in this movie.

10. Lust, Caution (2006, China, Taiwan)
Spanning the late '30s and early '40s, the movie introduces us to Hong Kong teen Wong Chia Chi, a shy college freshman who finds her calling in a drama society devoted to patriotic plays. But the troupe's leader, Kuang Yu Min, isn't just a theater maven -- he's a revolutionary as well planning to assassinate top Japanese collaborator Mr. Yee. Each student has an important role to play, and Wong puts herself in a dangerous position as Mrs. Mak; she befriends Mr. Yee's wife, and slowly gains trust before tempting him into an affair. Complications arise and the plan has to be postponed, but a few years later they have the opportunity of carry it on. Wong again gains intimate access to her dangerous prey, she must struggle with her own identity in order to pull off the performance of a lifetime. The ending is absolutely heart-breaking.
