I just re-watched "As You Were" and I was thinking of what Riley said. I believe Spike says something similar to Buffy in S7, as well. This led me to ponder: What is it about Buffy? What made each guy go "Ooo!"? I don't want this to turn into a 'ship war or anything, just opinions on why each guy wanted the Buffster.
What I'm thinking...
Xander: I'm not really 100% sure on this one. Buffy was the new girl in school and obviously attractive, which piqued Xander's interest. By the end of Season 1, he says he's in love with her, but to me it's not really clear why.
Owen: I think he was on the mysterious and exciting women bandwagon as well. Buffy was new to town and was obviously hiding things. I also think he was drawn to her because she was more outgoing and not so into school, which is his opposite. He was looking for someone different than the usual Cordelias.
Angel: Angel was led to her just as she was being called as The Slayer. In her he saw a vulnerable girl being led into this new dark, dangerous place. She was already in a lonely place, living a superficial life and her parents going through a divorce. I think he was initially drawn to her as a protector, then became attracted to her, then found kindship in another lonely soul. They are always drawn to each other.
Scott: Yes, she was beautiful and mysterious. She was also friends with Oz, so Scott was probably thinking that if Oz hung around her, she must be cool. Buffy is also very witty and quippy, which I think he liked also.
Parker: Obviously he's into "love 'em and leave 'em". Why did he zero in on Buffy? Well, she's hot. I also think he saw in her a vulnerability and a girl who was looking for a guy in her life. She was new to the college scene and not necessarily blending into it easily. He saw she was someone he could easily manipulate and use.
Riley: He loved that she was peculiar! She was different than other girls he knew. Once he found out she was The Slayer, he loved her for her strength, her passion, her love of her friends and family. I think he also loved her independence until it caused her to lock him out emotionally. And obviously, she was all cute and little compared to him!
Spike: This will be the most complicated one. I feel that when he first started his little obsession, it was more because she was The Slayer and was unattainable (as Buffy herself said.) After he was forced to fight on her side and was with her so often, he started to see more of who she was beyond "slayer". He gained more insight into her than all of her friends combined, simply by being around. He developed a liking to her mother and sister, and was willing to protect them to the point of death simply because they were important to Buffy. I think he also saw what Angel saw - a lonliness and darkness that comes from being The Slayer and he had the same from being a vampire. Once he regained his soul he was able to appreciate her even more, for her love of others, her courage, her perserverance. They have an understanding of each other. And obviously, they make a lot of heat physically!
