Episode Discussion 1.09 "A Spy In The House Of Love" - Aired 4/10/09 (FOX-USA)

I loved this episode as most of you also seems to have done.
Probably my favorite so far, there has been some others up there though.

Really liked the structure of the episode. I thought it was great storytelling.

Don't have much to add that haven't been told already.
Expect that the gun in the end obviously came from one of the guards.

/SK

Wow, that was an amazing episode. 😀 The pace seemed a bit slow, but I loved every minute. Lots of little callbacks to previous episodes, it really felt like everything was coming together to make a great story.

Oh and the scene with Dominic in the chair at the end was so creepy.

Yeah I felt the same, but I enjoyed the episode 😀
Creepy chair!

Just finished watching it; it's one of the best episodes so far, I loved it. I don't have much else to say on the matter, I think everyone else has basically expressed my opinions for me. 😉

um... the part where November was revealed to Ballard... my heart hurt for him... so much to be pummeled with, and then having to pretend 2 seconds later that everything is alright.... the look on his face was sooo distraught... ugh! killed me!

Great episode. I cried my eyes out 3 times when Adelle broke down, when Dominic said to Echo in the van and when Echo looked at Boyd in the last scene.
I like how they focused on each point of view. Every scene was wicked and couldnt move my eyes out of screen. So it's 100/100. 🙂

Wow, fantastic episode - the show is really starting to find its feet I think.

Dom as the spy - definitely did not see that coming! But I'm confused, is there another leak in the Dollhouse besides him, because surely he couldn't have interfered with the programming. Would he know how? He's just a security guy - or is that just what he wanted everyone to think? Also, he claims that the NSA doesn't want to bring the Dollhouse down, so why would he feed information to Ballard? That's why I was convinced that the spy was Topher's assistant (can't remember her name - something with V?) who has the skills.

Am I missing something totally obvious here?

A good episode. Sierra, going all mission impossible, cheesy as hell, but she made it work. Adelle and Victor, nice twist. Echo asking to be imprinted was interesting. November talking to Ballard was nice to see, and gave Ballard some kind of emotion, which was refreshing, because he's normally a plank of wood.
Eliza, has improved slightly in this episode. Still they seem to limit her performance to some nice scenes, then throw in some action scenes, and dominatrix gear. Action and half naked scenes seem to be this great range that Joss see's in Eliza. More worrying is that Eliza is a producer on the show, you think she would have a word in the writer's ears to give her a character to stretch her acting chops.
After the initial, " Hot damn, Eliza's ass ", and a happy dance from me, came the feeling that I just wish this show would offer her more to do, as it is, she is been outshone by the other actors.
More worries. Boyd been distanced from Echo. Not good. He has been wasted in the last few episodes, he is one of the show's strongest characters, and actors. This is also true for Dominic. Sad to see him go.
Also his trip to the attic, was pretty brutal. To think that these characters can go to such extremes to silence someone, makes them truly unlikeable. After seeing Topher, ad Adelle taking part in this. I have no real interest in their characters anymore. Seem like sicko's. Hopefully Echo will " wipe" them someday.

OH MY GOD!!!

I don't even know where to begin. Every friday I have this urge to run online and d/l the episode (since I'm not in the States). And I have to say that for the last 4 episodes, the show keeps getting better and better.

I love the characters interaction and development. Adelle & Victor, OH MY!! I would have never seen that one coming not in a million years! I thought it was a pretty cool twist, plus we got to see a little bit more about Adelle and how she feels, though I felt really sad for her at the end 🙁

Echo, I love her! She's SO cool, at times she looks so sweet and innocent and some other times, like the dominatrix :tongue05: she's so strong and violent!

Topher, that guy is SO funny, he cracks me all the time I have to admit. And he kinda reminds me of Xander in a way, only geekier 😀

Dominic, They finally got rid of him! I've never liked him so I couldn't be happier.

Millie & Ballard, I've found that scene sad, yet honest and sweet. The guy finally realizing the real power of the Dollhouse and what they're willing to do in order to protect their "business".

Uhhh! I can't wait for the next episode!! 😀

Echo love karma ;)
I'm not going to repeat all the brilliant observations previously mentioned.
I will add my approval of the ep and the show thus far.
First-rate, bang-up job, Joss! Thanks. 😀

I haven't been as big of a fan of this show, as others. This episode was great. It hasn't completely changed my opinion of the show, because I still feel like there's been a high percentage of poor episodes for such a short run. And episode six was great as well, but the following two episodes were probably as bad or worse than any of the standalones.

Enough with the complaints though. This episode was good, and was everything I feel like Dollhouse should be but often isn't. The whole ensemble got some good screen time. The "shocking moments" were genuinely shocking moments (the previous big surprises like Mellie and Victor being dolls were predictable as hell!), and the whole thing entertained. If the last couple episodes are as good as this, perhaps I'll even join some of you in mourning this show when (if?) it gets cancelled.

I got a major Alias vibe from the whole ep...which isnt a bad thing cos I love Alias!!!!

I dont understand whats going through the powers tha be's heads they keep airing awesome eps and then following them up with boring ones. Man on the Street was Followed by Echoes, Needs was awesome and so was SITHOL but...and im sorry....Haunted looks boring as hell.

I didnt hate the first five episodes but werent we practically promised awesome eps from 6 onwards....ummm hello Echoes anybody!!!!!!!!!!!

A fantastic episode way more upbeat in the way of drama, loved it when Mellie/November gave Paul another message. Found them really sweet together when they carried on kissing. Echo was awesome tonight I loved it when she asked to be imprinted its showing us that there is more to her than meets the eye. Loved how they found out Dominic was the spy although I do think it was a little too easy like its actually not him or something.

Adelle was rocking tonight loved it that she was "Miss Lonely Hearts" and was really loving Victor with an English accent. Never piss her off and of course Sierra kicking butt was amazing I loved how she was so smooth and handled herself well. Poor Boyd didn't like seeing Echo getting a new handler but I swear she was still looking at him at the end with the whole trust thing.

All in all brilliant, much better than Needs. 😀

I loved this episode. Definitely one of my favorites so far.

- Finally, I feel that Echo can be accurately described as "aware," and I love that. She's taking note of everything around her. She's taking initiative in investigating things and reaching out to fellow Dolls, when before all of these things seemed to happen by accident. She seems to know she's a Doll, which is the most remarkable thing I think, and she knows the basic premise of the Dollhouse. She wants to learn, she wants to help. When she sat in the chair and offered to help Topher, my heart melted a little. Echo is adorable, simply put. It's also interesting that Topher didn't seem to alter ECHO when he imprinted her with the spy-catcher. She was still Echo, just with spy-catching skills, and I think that's the first time that's happened? She also remembers what happened while she was the spy-catcher after she was wiped again. ("She made a mistake and now she's sad.")

- Victor and Adelle....oh my god, ew. Sooo creepy. I mean, it gave a lot of depth to Adelle's character, and invoked a whole lot of sympathy for her, and I really felt bad for her at the end...I just really wish they hadn't touched. At all. Too creepy for words. I knew "Miss Lonely Hearts" would be important, though, especially when they repeated that bit in the "Previously on Dollhouse" bit.
Also...I love a man with an English accent as much as anybody, but God, Victor slaughtered it. Painful to listen to.

- Gahh, Dominic. I'm glad he's in the Attic, although, wow, setting someone up for the attic is a really brutal procedure. The kind of thing to make you sick watching, really. I'm glad Echo got her revenge on him, even if it was in a really brutal way. And I'm glad we finally have hard facts about what the Attic is.

- The Mellie/Paul thing was sad. I don't particularly like Paul, but even that was really harsh. As soon as they programmed Mellie, I knew what was bound to happen. Sad, sad, sad.

- Adelle is a BAMF! 🙂

So yeah. I really loved this episode.

I also liked how Echo was still Echo, just with spyhunter abilities added. Also great that Adelle didn't wipe her afterwards. She's allowing her to keep those memories!
I don't like that Adelle was with Victor. I think it taints the Sierra/Victor relationship. I know that the same could be said for any relationship that Victor is programmed for, but it seems one step too much if Adelle is knowingly doing it. I wonder if anyone else knows...

Did anyone reading this watch the Dresden Files for the short time it was on Sci-Fi? I havent researched it yet, but I think the woman that played Victor's handler is the same woman that played Det. Murphy on the Dresden Files.

I have noticed that people are, at times, disappointed with Eliza's lack of a character but that could be where Joss is going. Echo is slowly becoming more of a character than any of the "characters" she is programmed to be. I think it may be something he's doing on purpose.

I wonder if Adelle has a thing for Victor, or if the person he was imprinted with is a lost love she knew, or her ideal perfect man, or whatever.

Also, as interest, the title of the episode is also the title of a book from 1954 about a woman who at home, pretended to her husband that she was an actress, when really she was trying to seduce every man she could when she was out.... i could see a couple of reasons why Joss would reference this novel for this episode, but what do you guys think?
