There's a thread at AfterDarkness talking about all the movies coming out hoping to exploit all the fears of the world ending in 2012.

You heard about that, right? The Mayan calendar ends in 2012, or some such thing, so the world is supposed to end there.

It got me to thinking. Maybe it's time to get our bets down, so we can go with a smile our face knowing we were right.

Let's pretend we're honestly scared. What freaks you the most?

I chose the one thing I fear the most. A comet strike. I would hope the world could deflect it. Ok well not 'earth' but us, people. But yup, that's the way I'd want it. Seems only right. I wouldn't wait for it though. If I knew it was going to hit and really take us all out, I'd just...sleep.

Ok if and that's a (HUGE if) the world was going to end in under 4 years then my concerns would be not doing everything I plan to do. There are things I want from life and I would feel I only half lived if I didn't get a chance to live them or at least go after them. How it would actually go down, with a bang or with a whimper. Would it hurt? Fear of being the only person left behind would probably be something that would cross my mind. Mostly I would struggle to come to the concept of everything just being over, being done, of no tomorrow. I don't think I'd handle that very well.

Wouldn't the spookiest thing be if you were one of the survivors? You know, "the living shall envy the dead", down to your last bullet with the cannibals coming, and all that.

If it's going to happen does it matter? If it happens, we're over. It doesn't matter what did it. If the world is supposed to end in 2012 it could be shot down by a big floating ship full of space monkeys with banana blasters for all I care.

But I agree with Kean. I'd worry about what I haven't got to do or what if I was the last person. That stuff sort of scares me...

I'm rooting for the End of the World as We Know It. I really really really hate this planet. As a species, I think we suck. My hubby wants a survivable Armageddon, like zombies or something. I'm just looking forward to oblivion.

In case you haven't already guessed, you've hit upon the subject through which my bitter streak runs. 🙂

bitter. on the + side youve totally hit your Illyria inner core :)
I'd take the comet strike, because it would be over with quickly, if not instantaneously. I'm not much for the "hang on and suffer," scenario.

God, this stuff freaks me out but here I am, morbidly posting an answer. Personally I'm 50/50 on this whole 2012 thing. On the one hand my 'Might as well trust the forture cookie' skeptic side says 'How many freakin' times has the world been predicted to end? Lots. How many times has it happened? None'. Besides humans are survivors by nature. The Black Plague came and shook us up centuries ago but the world didn't end, their descendents, namely us, are still here. But then my other half is not so much a believer as just worried.

But if I were to believeit, what would be the cause of all this- I'd guess some natural disastor like the Yellowstone listed above or some other freaky thing. Nature coming to bite us in the ass for all our kind has done to it over the years.

Personally though, I like to think positive. Why is it end of the world for 2012. Yes, the Mayan calendar is ending, but the Mayan belief of what would happen when it does come to an end is two outcomes. One is yes, the end of the world, or rather a 'cleansing' of the old, but the other possibility is that humans will reach a new state of living and consciousness. Becoming more in tune with nature's vibrations as we once were, if we're willing to prepare for such a change e.g reducing our carbon footprint etc. And personally I'd rather think of that then all these negative options.

Yeah yeah, blah blah blah, humanity sucks. I think we're a fantastic species.

Suoer virus or something. Seriusly, probably something we triggered ourselves and lost control over.

And I have heard about this Mayan calendar thing before, my best friend told me that at the age of 9 or 10...we were quite the nerds.

It´s nothing wrong with the planet, it´s the species. Wipe us out and give the planet another chance if that´s possible. I just hopes it goes fast, not that we deserve it.

Well, I think this is a load of horse hooey. There have been hundreds of dates where the apocalypse was supposed to come, but they didn't. But, if it were to come, I'd want it to be something quick and painless instead of a virus or slowly developing ice age. And, if it were just the planet ending, maybe we could be like the people in Firefly. I wouldn't mind hanging out on a ship with the boys of the Serenity crew!

Hell yeah bring on the serenity boys :p
With all the hang ups on Global Warming at the minute, I wouldn't be surprised if we got ourselves a new Ice Age...Like that movie 'The Day After Tomorrow', think Jake Gyllenhall would be around to keep me warm? 😉

To be honest, I think the world's gonna go out with a bang. Depending on what your beliefs are, some of us (me included) believe the world started with a bang. Why shouldn't it go out the same way?

The thing that scares me most is not getting things done that I wanna do. I wanna get married, I wanna have kids, I wanna travel the States, I wanna die in bed surrounded by fat grandkids. Knowing my luck, the world will end while I'm stuck in traffic...cry moar

First...didn't we hear all this talk in 1999 with the Y2K bug and all the scare stories that came of that matter?

Second...Penn and Teller have a one word reply to all this end of the world in 2012 talk: Bull****!

OK. How about that super collider they're building in Switzerland? The idea is that it'll create mini-black holes...Earth gets sucked into oblivion, or something. A pretty exotic way to go.
