31 Days of (Christmas) Spuffy

Day 3: If things had gone differently in 'Crush', would Spike have staked Dru to prove his love?
I agree with a few of the other posters; yes, he would've gone through with it, but would have regretted almost immediately once he was alone again. He would come to blame Buffy for it and his love for her would turn into something much darker. It would not be pretty.

That moment from the comic panel is so poignant- really powerful stuff. Never thought I'd be saying that about a comic strip. Just goes to show how strong the characters and story are.
I do understand what you are all saying about Spike staking Dru to prove a point, but frankly right now I'm just rejoicing that he didn't!! 🙂)

Has anyone chosen a day 4 yet?
If nobody has, can I put forward something? If it's not pertinent then I won't list my suggestions and that has the added benefit of letting someone else choose first.

Day 4: if you could pick a song (or songs) for Spike and Buffy, which would you go for?

I have some ideas but just in case this doesn't fly, I'll keep them to myself for the time being. And presumably each day we just carry on talking about previous choices as well! Love it.

Day 4: if you could pick a song (or songs) for Spike and Buffy, which would you go for?

My ipod - like me - is stuck on Leonard Cohen (thank you Canada 🙂 Thank you @GoSpuffy🙂 Thank you Canadian Bears🙂 And okay it's Spike singing but to her - right? Don't argue - I'm feeling belligerent 😡

And I'm having this - cos it's Christmas. Remember - belligerent - don't try to stop me! 😡

Just your 2 should be fine, especially once we get to the next page :)
I'm gonna think on this and come back, but I have a request; can you not post YT videos, cause it slows down my loading capacity and I can't enter the thread 🙁

Argh! Sorry - can I delete them?
Day 3: no I don't think Spike would have staked Dru. He took care of her for too long and she was still precious to him. It was just grandstanding. Look how he freed Buffy even when he threatened her.

Re - Page above - it's from Chapter 4 of Alone Together Now. I'm not sure about the availability in the single comic format but it's in Spike: The Complete Series (below). Ask for it - no, demand it 😡 - for Christmas. It's what the season was invented for - it's Santa's raison d'etre. Tell your nearest and dearest that they're neither near nor dear if this isn't in your stocking at Christmas. 🙁 You're entitled to use any emotional blackmail available. My own offspring have developed severe psychological problems since I tasked them with finding the Spike puppet - I've told them I'm worth it (okay - I also told them it was rare and a solid financial investment and everything in my will goes to them but I MEANT "I'm worth it").

I think Angel would go to Buffy but I don't think it would split Spike/Buffy unless Spike's insecurities started to cause them problems. Because yes, I think he'd struggle with the scenario. As you know, I think Spike has a lot of problems with the monster still within him and there is plenty of references to being a 'real' boy in his story. I think he would find it difficult both in terms of jealousy and it flaring those issues. But I don't think Buffy would just swoon and fall into Angel's arms. It would be something that she would have a reaction to though, and I think that it would be fair and understandable that it would be something for her to get her head around too. It is just that that wouldn't help Spike's reactions for sure. But as an event in itself I don't think it would signal the end of Spuffy.

I really don't think Spike would sire Angel. I honestly think he'd see it as damning him and that it would be a terrible thing to do. If Angel was asking him and they were prepared to ensoul him perhaps, but not by choice.

The Spike 8 series has serious issues with canon compatibility on soul mythology. Lych made up some serious nonsense there. Luckily the canon with Joss' name fully to it can overrule it and you can just ignore that nonsense in the Spike series. I remember quite enjoying it, that aside.

I'm not sure if Spike would have staked Dru in Crush, I think he probably wouldn't have. Again re: the Spike 8 series. I'm not sure I agree that he'd feel Dru was 'home' still souled. He had effectively chosen to turn from her when he was still unsouled, has made no move since becoming souled to try and see her and has described himself as a victim since too. I'd love to see how Joss would have them meet again, I'm sure Spike would still care for her, but I'm not sure where his boundaries on that would be now.

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with this thread. I've no ideas on songs. 🙂

Omg you and I are alike! Thank you for confirming I have bought the right thing! Gorgeous artwork.
Love love love this!!! My husband simply does not understand my obsession with this character - probably just as well he doesn't realise the full extent of my fixation!!! But S10 is on the list for Christmas.

Phew! Ok, have to briefly mop my forehead - which is not large - and get back on topic. Especially since I suggested it:
I'm going to be greedy and have several songs, so there!
Current classics: Arms Open by The Script
Paloma's demo tape for the next Bond theme: Guilty
Killers - I'm the Man

Sade- No Ordinary Love
Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love

Then quick as you can say Stuck in the 80s, I go even further back with
Whole Lotta Love by the inimitable Led Zep. The last line should be the anthem of this particular forum.

Mine are essentially frivolous! Except for The Script.

In my book, husbands are dispensable (as are kids but leaving them on doorsteps tends to get frowned on - besides, it's difficult to make them stay put once they reach 30). Spuffy is a vocation - an obligation - not an option (said sternly).
@Stoney exactly my thoughts on Shanshued Angel and his effects on Spike, don't you think Buffy not choosing human Angel and finally having a closure with human Angel cuz that will be the answer to the "what if" is exactly what all three of them need? I think that would be enough for Spike to get rid of his relationship insecurities and that stupid "beneath her" line if Buffy chose him over a human Angel

Great point that it would provide a sense of closure, something more complete than there has already been anyway. Of course that probably makes it less likely that the writers would go there, but it would be a positive thing for all three I agree. I think it would be a massive boost to Spike's sense of worth. I don't think it would fix his issues with being a monster, it would/could still make them worse even if he doesn't lose the relationship because that isn't tied to Buffy, but it would be a huge thing for him to feel chosen with both relationships as viable options. 🙂

Day 4: if you could pick a song (or songs) for Spike and Buffy, which would you go for?

For Buffy: Uninvited by Alanis Morissette
For Spike: Take me to Church by Hozier
For Spuffy: Wind Beneath Your Wings .....😎

My husband simply does not understand my obsession with this character - probably just as well he doesn't realise the full extent of my fixation!!!

Your husband and my husband have something in common.....

Ooh I love that Hozier song! How could I forget it!
@TriBel on a recent thread you mentioned some Cohen lyrics, I didn't think they were from Ain't No Cure For Love, I can't remember, can you? 🙂

If I quoted them they were probably from Closing Time (I've just discovered there's an Anaross unfinished fic called Closing Time and she quotes the song so I'm not on my own in thinking them apt - at least for S6). I'd also go for Cohen's I'm Your Man. Damn...I'd go for the whole Cohen song book.

I loved you for your beauty
But that doesn't make a fool of me
You were in it for your beauty too
And I loved you for your body
There's a voice that sounds like god to me
Declaring, (declaring) declaring, declaring that your body's really you
And I loved you when our love was blessed
And I love you now there's nothing left
But sorrow and a sense of overtime
And I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don't care what happens next
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
It's something in between, I guess
It's closing time

Thank you. I shall be mostly listening to Cohen today :-)
Day 5: Why does Buffy ask Spike if he loves her in As You Were, if she doesn't believe he can love? What are your thoughts on this scene?

@Priceless "I shall be mostly listening to Cohen today 🙂" - A day well spent - and describes most of my days. Check out Sharon Robinson singing Alexandra Leaving. She and Cohen co-wrote it. The paper I was writing (that still hasn't manifested itself because I spend too much time on here) was originally based on the song. To my mind, there are two voices at play - an external voice alluding to events leading up to Touched and the scene in the stranger's house and a second interior voice on the edge of Spike's conscious reflecting on the past and giving him fortitude for what will follow. The latter combines two voices - Spike talking and Spike listening (in italics). Spike listening is a sign of his increasing maturity. I think - in the initial moment he joins her on the bed , he's carrying the weight of his 120+ years. The song's based on the poem The God Abandons Antony by Constantine P. Cavafy - I think William would like it. (Dear All - Sorry for the over-indulgence here. It's Spuffy right? So I can indulge - right?) 😳

Suddenly the night has grown colder
The god of love preparing to depart
Alexandra hoisted on his shoulder,
They slip between the sentries of the heart

Upheld by the simplicities of pleasure
They gain the light, they formlessly entwine
And radiant beyond your widest measure
They fall among the voices and the wine

It's not a trick, your senses all deceiving
A fitful dream, the morning will exhaust
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost

As someone long prepared for the occasion;
In full command of every plan you wrecked---
Do not choose a coward's explanation
that hides behind the cause and the effect,

You who were bewildered by a meaning,
whose code was broken, crucifix uncrossed---
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving.
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost.

I'll answer the new question and post later. Merged posts make the crap I write even crappier. 🙁

I don't usually like poetry - yeah I know - but this is amazing
Day 5: Why does Buffy ask Spike if he loves her in As You Were, if she doesn't believe he can love? What are your thoughts on this scene?

This is an 'off the top of my head response', so what others say might sway my thinking otherwise. 😉

I think Buffy is at her worst in using him in this moment to be honest because it is openly and deliberately playing on what his feelings for her are rather than reducing it to physical desire. It works that it is the last time they are together before she breaks it up because of who she feels she is becoming in how she is treating him. The moment reminds me a little of Spike using Harmony in S5 tbh, telling her to be quiet because it would ruin it.

Buffy is feeling low because of Riley's return and his seemingly solid marriage. She wants to feel wanted and loved and Spike can offer that. It isn't about how she judges or values his ability to feel a depth of love at that moment, it is about her wanting to lose herself in the fantasy of being desired and wanted beyond just the physical connection, to feel loved. Obviously it is complicated because there is a degree to which his outward behaviour of wanting her and loving her plays its part in her managing to lose herself in that feeling. But she does believe his feelings are real to him and she has seen evidence of his care/regard for her creating tangible results enough that at that moment she wants to forget who/what he is and fully believe in them too with him, if you see what I mean.

Day 5: Why does Buffy ask Spike if he loves her in As You Were, if she doesn't believe he can love? What are your thoughts on this scene?
I agree with @Stoney she was using him and I would love to be proven otherwise.
I don't think she believed that he cant love cuz she had seen him with Dru, then again the blunder he made in crush by offering to kill Dru so that may have given Buffy more ammo to think that he can't love but she does realise that he loves her in intervention and he didn't leave he stayed and protected Dawn after her death so she definitely knew it was love and not just lust or some infatuation. Becuase he was soulless she thought he does not really deserve to be treated well and if she feels something for him then she is also a monster and not human(cuz human are supposed to be very special). I don't think her friends especially Giles and Xander would have ever accepted him soulless, Willow might but she was also on the verge of going dark that season. Giles would have killed him even if she had said that she loves him cuz Giles did try to kill him in s7 and he was really not feeling that bad about hurting Spike with magic in s10 when they were checking if Spike has been killing so her concern about not letting her friends know was right and did play a big part on thinking why Spike deserves to be treated the way she was treating him. This panel shows she has grown up and what she used to think in s6
