605 - 'Him' Official Discussion

I hope I am doing this right...none of my friends understand my obsession with BTVS, so I was recommended to try your site.

Regarding this episode...I never usually check the credits, but was there a new director? The whole feel and look to the episode looked entirely different...particularly the retro, Charlie's Angel spilt screen and Zander's flashback (Joss never usually panders to his established audience, since he knows full well we know every epidsode by heart and therefore would know to what Zander was referring). I liked the episode overall, because of the character broadening of Dawn and the typical teenage angst...remember Buffy started in highschool, so getting back to its roots might attract more fans and, shall I hope, continue the series past this season. Although the Zander/Spike room-mate pairing has appeal (two of my faves in one place...yummy...and funny), I did not think it made sense. What happened to Spike's crypt?? He blew up the "basement", but in the last episode/Season Six, flappy skin guy was house-sitting his perfectly intact livingroom. Also, Zander would never, ever agree to this...he hates Spike and add to that the attempted rape and Spike's rebound sex with Zander's ex-fiance...nope never happen. Plus, doesen't Buffy have room at her place...it would be better suited, especially when she realizes she loooves Spike and wants to start having sex AGAIN. Gonna get flak for that one🙂 Speaking of sex..and preferences...I also remember that Willow has been in love/had sex with both a man and a woman..which makes her bi-sexual!!!!! How about a love triangle for her...Zander and...Anya (don't forget they shared a "lesbian moment" in the episode when Willow comes home). Any thoughts????
 
Tonight's ep was too funny except the part about Dawn wanting to kill herself over a guy. Ugghh, no guy is worth killing yourself over. Ewww!!😱 😱 hehe Anyway, I liked at the end when the guy on the radio started talking about "the bandit" and Anya turned the radio off!! That was priceless!!😎 😎

Yes. It's the theme from "A Summer Place" - an old old movie which came out in 1959. It was about adultery and teenage love and starred among other people, Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue. I realize, I may be the only one remotely old enough to know who either of those people are (but Rizzo sings about them in Grease, if that helps).

I am a very visual person, always learned things in school very visually, so I see things, details that others may miss. HOWEVER, I don't think you need to have this special talent that I do to have realized that in the end of the episode last night, when Xander and Spike are skulking up on RJ to steal his jacket, they pass the store window and you can PLAIN AS DAY see James Marsters' reflection in the glass. Spike, as a vampire, has no reflection! Does anyone know how easy/difficult and how cheap/costly it is to fix that kind of stuff post-production? If they can show Dracula turning into a bat, can't they digitally remove a reflection?

Otherwise, I loved the episode. Lauged a lot at Spike/Buffy wrestling over the rocket launcher.

Question - what was the significance of Spike turning the angels around? Does that have something to do with Dru having put blindfolds on her dolls? Just wondering.
 
This episode made me laugh so hard. It was a much needed episode because I doubt we will be laughing much in the following weeks. I truly enjoyed the split scene part and i think it represented the different ways each character relates to love:

Buffy - kills and protects her love

Willow - using magic to make him into a woman (she's gay not bi)

Dawn - she's a melodramatic teenager. Any woman out there can remember their first "love" and how it felt to be rejected or betrayed. it's a life or death feeling. And considering how emotional Dawn already is, this is truly how she would respond.

Anya - she goes for MONEY! what else. for some reason she associates money with love, maybe it has to do with security.

The point is love make us do crazy things. I think what the girls did was true to who their characters have been established.

I do have a problem with Xander allowing Spike to move in. I can understand why he owuldn't move in with Buffy though, no one would allow it. The soul situation must be explored further.

Overall, I think it was one of the best ep's ever, because I personally love to laugh! It was classic. And yes the plot wasn't moved along very quickly, but you still learned important information. Besides, everyone can't be serious ALL the time!
 
Willow is not bisexual. Just because a lesbian has HAD sex with a guy before, doesn't mean she hasn't decided to go the completely opposite direction. A bisexual is someone who likes both guys and girls... NOW.

Actually, most gays/lesbians have had opposite sex partners before.
 
Sorry...gonna have to disagree with the mighty Buffy and give hope to Diminished 9th. Willow did not just have sex with a man...she was completely in love with/initimate with one, Oz to be exact. Plus, never in the first 4 seasons did she question her sexuality...always the crush on Zander, not Buffy. I have nothing against her having relationships with women...I liked Tara and was very moved by their relationship, particularly the way Joss blindsided us with Tara's death...but I just don't want Willow's sexual history or other relationship diminished. So, my vote...bisexual. Did you read my last post though? Did anyone else notice the moment, as commented on by Anya, between Willow and Anya, during Willow's homecoming episode?? Maybe a love triangle?? Willow, Anya, Zander?
 
I don't think television is ready for mainstream characters to be in a threesome, and honestly, I don't want to see it. Willow/Tara pushed an envelope, but there are still lines that haven't been crossed.

Call me a fuddy duddy. I'm in favor of not crossing 'em.
 
I loved last night's ep, it was hysterically funny. Yeah, Dawn was a pain. I was horrified was she pushed the kid down the stairs and then totally lies about it. Other horrifying moment: Counselor Buffy ATOP student RJ. Yeesh!

Dawn's not flirty and funny because she doesn't know how to be yet, she's still a kid. Of course her world would end over a guy. In high school everything bad feels like the end of the world and everything good is the best thing ever. I was so proud of Buffy though who loves her lil sis so much she could shake the spell a bit when she saw Dawn ready to be be trisected. Not proud that Buffy was all set to kill the boss to get him off RJ's back!

Other randoms: I know the theme to A Summer Place, Dimin9 why do your teeth hurt? I'm with the Willow bi group, she loved OZ totally and completely. And Ripperfan: I hope you're right, I'd Love that to be Parker next wk!

Watch Incea Mummy Girl. There's a reference to the theme from A Summer Place, made by none other than my own love, Oz. This is just one more reference of the guy (instanbul and werewolves from "Lessons", Will's love poems, are others), but my hope that it means the return of Oz is dwindling. So I don't know what to think. Is it all a coincidence? It's disturbing. It just raises the Oz missage.

So, yeah, you're right....regardless of what she is now, they CLEARLY wrote Willow to be in love with Oz. They can't just snatch that back and say, "Never mind, just kidding."
 
Okay...loved it all!! Especially Dawn trying out as a cheerleader---just as worse as Buffy's tryouts! Also--Skanky Dawn--reason number 1,001 why parents should always know where their kids are! In my day, our parents would never had let us out of the house--let alone dance like that(has she been watching Showgirls?) Man, that Dawn can be vicious. What did Spike say: When did your sister(Dawn)start being so scary? A harbinger of things to come with our little Ms. Summers? I hope not. Also--Spike and the angels--it could be the whole Drusilla thing. If that is the case--which one of Spike/Xander is Druscilla and which one is Spike? Also--nice flash back to BBB...one of my all-time favorites...Last but not the least--loved the whole rocket launcher trying to knock off Principal Wood. I was laughing my arse off!!! Side note: I actually did know this kid in high school who broke his leg when a vending machine fell on it. It seems that Tweedledum put his money in, and when he didn't get his can of Coke, he started to rock it. The next thing you know--it fell on him. Then the administration had the janitors nail the machines to the walls. And no, he still didn't get his Coke, but he had the privledge of using the elevator to get to class--which was cool if you ever had a chance to use it.

Okay, the first half of the episode kinda sucked. They must have used the word 'sl*t' 50 times in this episode. Sorry, but, hey, the second half was hilarious! First, the best part was Anya saying:
"Yeah, right. What are you gonna do, use magic to make him into a girl?... Damn!"
That has to be one of the funniest things Anya's ever said. I was dying; laughing so hard my stomach hurt. When I saw Buffy standing outside Principal Woods office, I was falling off the couch. Then Spike runs by & jumps of Buffy to get the huge-ass weapon away from her. Then Buffy runs by the window and jumps on Spike trying to get it back. Then you see Spike running away...and Buffy running by after him. It just look so silly from the window.
Then Anya again:
"I, uh, wrote a poem. An epic poem. Comparing him to a daisy, and a tower, and a lake. (Then the radio comes on about the "Sunnydale bandit".) Okay, great, ice cream. My treat?"
 
Oh... Diminished_9th, you totally didn't understand me. I LOVED Willow and Oz together! They were the sweetest, best couple. I pray daily for Oz to return and for them to get together... but I doubt it'll happen.

And deciding that you're a lesbian doesn't diminish the significance of your past relationships. Being bisexual means that now, in this moment, you would go either way (when not influenced by a love spell) Being a lesbian means that you are attracted to girls only. And Willow is a lesbian. She COULD change again. People do. But right now, she is a lesbian.
 
Sigh.....I guess everyone here is too young to remember this - but wasn't the split screen of all the women classic Charlie's Angels, or at least classic 70's melodrama/action with women (maybe some 6 Million Dollar Man in there)?!?
 
Yup, Kam, the split screen was classic Charlie's Angels (and yes, I'm old enough to remember) SHLBYN also mentioned the Charlie's Angels split screen earlier this in this thread. 🙂 Hmm..I don't recall if the Six Million Dollar Man (or Woman) used the split screen as well. LOL!

As for the episode itself, it was definitely filler. It had it's moments of comedy relief, especially the Spike/Buffy scene everyone has mentioned. I saw this episode as a throwback to season 1. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it, either.

I agree with Buffy Ann on the whole Willow sexuality issue.Willow is a currently a lesbian, and not a bi-sexual. If she were bi-sexual right now, she would be interested in men as well, which she isn't. And this does not belittle her past relationship with Oz (and I'm a big Oz/Willow fan) If you recall Vampire Willow was a lesbian, and Angel said something to the effect that a vampire's preferences are reflective of their preferences when they were human. Not his exact words, but something to that effect.
 
i liked the episode, but for some reason i expected more. but it was pretty funny, especially after willow and anya fell in love with him too.
more could have been done with the xander and spike team thing, but i guess they didn't want to overdo it or something. spike actually stayed pretty quiet for the whole episode.
could have done with out the little flashback.. but xander's "good times" line after it made me laugh.
that part with the four split-screens was good, reminded me of 24, heh.

OKay so Spike was turning the little angel dolls around, right? Can comeone explain to me what that's gotta do with Dru?
