A Fourth Slayer?

Or maybe, by then, the Council realised that it was supremely inefficent to have merely one slayer. Therefore, given economies of scale, they decided to slowly increase it to 2, then 3, then give up controlling the numbers altogether.

Problem is, Buffy then called up enough Slayers to use up 200 years' worth of callings. Which ends up in Frayverse.

But the Council isn't responsible for Calling Slayers, they merely train Potentials to become the Slayer, or they go out and find and train the girls who were never Potentials, like Buffy. They have nothing to do with the actual Calling part of it.

And on that note, we never actually find out how a Slayer, or Potential, is Chosen, do we? Or who does the choosing? I mentioned in a fic I wrote once about it being the PTB and people nearly ate me for it, lol.

Whoops. Short-term memory loss. 😛

Hehe, the other incessant question. 🙂

We have Word Of Joss support the "one line through Faith" argument, but nothing on screen (and only on-screen is canon) supporting that; we have at least two on-screen moments to suggest "multiple lines" namely, the S7 bit by Buffy, and a S3 bit by Mayor Wilkins (who, I trust, is pretty well versed in his occultism) telling someone (Angelus?) not to kill Buffy because "the next Slayer called might not turn out as swell as my Faith".

I thus support the multiple lines theory - including the Slayer called after The Gift, whom we just never got to see - even if it contradicts Joss' personal fanfiction. 😉

Then again, of course, after Chosen the whole debate is only of historical interest anymore. 😀

There's a theory that said everything starts at the beginning again, girls aren't born as full Slayers, they're born as Potentials, and everything starts over. One of the Slayers created by the Scythe is actually THE Slayer, the girl who would have been Called had the line continued to run as it normally would, and it's her death that Calls the next true Slayer.

That's actually how I'd always thought of it. It makes the most sense. However, it's kind of contradicted in Harmonic Divergence due to the fact that a girl, Soledad, is shown being called long after the Scythe spell. This would mean that Potentials are still being called once they reach a certain point in their lives --

IE, puberty.

Hmmm... I've always thought that there was another Slayer called after "The Gift", but we never got to see them. I mean, the world's a big place, there's more Hellmouths and plenty more random evil than just Sunnydale. Since both Buffy and Faith were from the US, I've always thought that probability wise, the new Slayer was probably from another country, quite possibly too far to be a "help" to Sunnydale.

The only thing I have a problem with in my theory, is why wouldn't Giles track her down in Season 7 anyway- after over a year, she's probably reasonably experienced, and has the strength and speed the Potentials lack. Even with the distance, I think it's established that the First Evil could well prove a global threat.

However, if the line truly had passed on from Buffy, if the "essence" that is the Slayer was only passed on through Kendra and Faith's line, then why would Buffy retain her Slayer powers when revived? Until possibly S7, where Willow's spell might well have reactivated them...

my thoughts exactly on your last paragraph!

Because Giles didn't know she existed? Like I mentioned before, I do think this is a possibility, for another girl to be Called after Buffy's death in 'The Gift' but Buffy's death already Called a new Slayer, Kendra. I don't think Giles would have really thought it was a possibility. A Slayer is supposed to pass on her role after her death, and Buffy already did this, creating the flux in the line we have/had. There's no reason why Giles would assume that the same thing happened again.

I think it's because a Slayer's body is built to hold these powers and the only way to get rid of them is death...and Giles stupid drug concoction, but that was temporary.

Buffy's heart stopped beating when she drowned, yes, but she wasn't technically dead, there must have still been brain activity for Xander to be able to give her CPR and bring her back. Her 'death' was enough for whoever is in control of these things to think a new Slayer was needed, but the actual power is still a part of Buffy, and Buffy was still very much alive.
