A planned shorter run for Firefly

I actually find, oddly enough, the overall lack of story to be biggest flaw with Firefly. There are a lot of episodes that, while entertaining and engaging, don't really advance the narrative too much. Firefly has a lot of excellent character interaction, and its hilarious a lot of the time, but on the whole I think of it as a number of very Joss-esque characters as opposed to a tremendous story.

The story was going to kick in later on, imo. A bit like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which took over half a season to really get going. Firefly spent a bit of time laying the ground work and settling in to its surroundings (which were a whole galaxy, so naturally took some time to fully reveal) and the end of the season was probably going to bring it all together.

I think that given Joss' success movie wise these days, if any of his shows had another run, they would be more successful because people would be more inclined to watch it. I think back when the show aired not many people gave it the time of day.

Like most others, I think that Joss was trying to establish his general story line and see how the characters would interact in the beginning, then, later, in probably a full length Season 2, begin filling in the history that went with each one. Reynolds, Chloe, their friendship and Mal's loss of faith and the Browncoat Rebellion in general. would have been explored, the romance between Chloe and Wash, certainly Brook's past, which was referred to a couple of times, but never expanded on, the general background of the idea of a life aboard "Serenity," would have all been explored to one degree or another, once Joss determined just who the Fans liked the most.
