Abbreviations and kewl talk reminder

I can't really understand how people can laugh with 'lol' without using it sarcastically. It's just so dry and plain. I mean, english is such an awesome language and stuff but nobody has came up with a good laugh so far.

Ha! I think so. If it's side-splitting comedy I might even throw out the haha!
I do like lawl over LOL though...

I love english but this is one of the times I prefer brazilian portuguese over it. You can just bash you head on the keyboard and there you have a regular laugh.

jkbaskhgafs. See, I just laughed like a regular human being just by typing random words. So much cooler than 'lol'.

Must admit I agree on the lol thing....It's one example of test speak I really don't like. A good 'Hahaha' will always get the message across as far as I'm concerned.

One problem I find non native speakers have with written English is plurals. A lot of other languages don't use them & the rules in English can be tricky to learn.

I don't get too worked up over bad English as, even though I'm British, I'm not perfect & still make mistakes....especially when I'm in a hurry. But if it's so bad it's
unreadable there's really no point in posting it.

Still like to use Smilies though....they can often convey added meaning, like that you are not being entirely serious. Cue's you would get from a persons body language
in face to face communication.....but that's just me. I know a lot of people don't like them.... 🙂

But there is a difference between it happening once in awhile and it being habitual. Especially with so many tool available to correct spelling/grammar.

Aww I use lol all the time. If I crack a smile, it gets a lol. And sometimes sarcastically too, which I can see can be hard to understand. I picked it up from chat and my language as definitely evolved with the way I chat (as in messenger or IRC) quick communication for minimum effort.
 
I am very active on three forums, look in daily on two others and have a minor presence on several more and I think I use LOL maybe once a year. And since I just did, that's it for this year.

But what if these people are still learning and this board would be their only chance of writing the language. I mean yes it might be hard to read at times, but I do feel that non-native members improve a lot and quite rapidly on this board, because of the lengthy discussions. It's all reading and writing practice, but I understand your view. I'm just playing devil's advocate!

There is a difference between those people, which is understandably and acceptable and native English speakers who simply don't care enough to be bothered with spelling and/or grammar. And I am at fault on grammar sometimes myself, but again, it's when it's done habitually; though I don't think that is a problem here now as much as it was.

I feel like the spelling has definitely improved on the internet. I was reading some of the old threads in the archive and wow the English some of those people used was absolutely horrible! Compared to now it was really much worse.
 
Well I for one am a better speller then I used to be. One reason could be they have a lot of spell checkers out there now on the internet.
