Reaction from original cast:

Multiple cast members have commented on the appearances of the characters they originated for the TV series in the Season 8 comics:

Nicholas Brendon (who portrayed Xander) mentioned the events of issue #12 in the Paley Center for Media Buffy cast reunion held March 20, 2008, to the obvious surprise of James Marsters (Spike) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy).

Brendon later commented more extensively on Xander's depiction in Season 8: "He's looking good, rocking the eye patch in charge of 500 chicks. That is the one thing that Xander would be completely blown away about "” being in charge of 500 slayers. Xander wasn't in charge of himself in the show!"

Anthony Stewart Head, who played Rupert Giles in the television series is quoted as saying: "I've seen bits of it and I'd love to see more because it's so cool. It's Joss "” and I love Joss's writing. I haven't had a lot of time but I must get the whole season and check it out."

Elizabeth Anne Allen, who portrayed Amy in the television series commented favourably on the first story arc, describing it as "awesome" and commenting that "[Season Six/Seven] was fun.... but I really would have loved to play Amy in Season 8. She is much darker."

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed Buffy in the television series commented that she doesn't know that Buffy was having a lesbian experience. When Seth Green (Oz) commented that Buffy was getting some hot ladies , she said "What?!". The reporter said that Buffy hook up with a girl, and she asked "With Willow?" and they said it was with a Slayer. She rounded up the comment by saying "Buffy's getting some action, nice. Good for her."

Georges Jeanty: Interestingly enough, the only one I've actually talked to and had an occasion to speak with was just recently at Dragon Con here in Atlanta. James Marsters and Juliet Landau were down and someone had mentioned to James in his panel if he had seen the new Buffy comic and he said he hadn't and they told him that there was a very graphic image of him, Angel and Buffy and, of course, he was outraged and asked who would even think to do that and who wrote that issue and someone yelled out "Joss Whedon wrote it" and he said "Oh well, okay, if that's the case, that's what Buffy and Spike and Angel are doing."

Question: In the last issue of Buffy's comic Season 8 Joss makes Buffy gay. What do you think about this choice? And, what would Spike have thought about it?
James Marsters: I asked Joss about that and he said that she wasn't necessarily gay but was experimenting. Spike would not accept that she was gay, but I would.
 
Its interesting to see if any of them have kept on reading! doesn't Seth Green read them all? and i can't believe SMG hasn't looked at any of them! if it was me I'd need to know after playing the character for so long! anyone know is Alyson reads them?
 
Interviewer: Wrapping up, Joss, have you heard from any of the cast of the show about the book? Are they reading it and have they given you any thoughts on it?
Joss Whedon: I just saw Aly yesterday and Tom Lenk brought her some issues. None of the cast are really aware of it and, generally speaking, you don't want to show the actors it because they'll just go, "Hey, that's not my nose!" Aly was like, "I guess that's an OK picture of me, but I seem kind of big!" And Tom said, "That's Dawn, you ninny!" (laughs) But, no, I haven't really heard anyone's opinion about it and (whispers) that's probably best! They are being beautifully rendered; don't get me wrong, I wish someone would draw me looking that hot.

Well, so would I. Ahem.

We all know how Joss feels about convenient labels.

But it's terribly obvious from the interaction between Buffy and Satsu that it's more than just "experimenting" and that there's far more there than a lust-induced one-night stand. Come on, Joss. Read your own comic.

Buffy may not be "gay." But she's not "straight" either.

I wonder if she's a bit disappointed with how Amy turned out. I know she said before she was hoping Amy would "get a grip" and get back to being friends with Buffy & Co. But it's been made pretty clear that's never going to happen.

Well, he never actually said she was straight - experimentation doesn't necessarily imply that. Plus, this is offhand referencing of what Joss said, not a quote.
 
I can't really pin down a reason why, but it makes me kinda sad SMG doesn't at least keep up with what goes on with her old character. I can get that she might not have time to read the comics...or really want to since maybe comics aren't her thing. I just felt like she at least had a passing intrest with life altering stuff for Buffy.

I wonder if she even cares about her old character? I'd wager she cares about the fans and old crew mates and writers. She does conventions and stuff for us still, afterall.

But....anyone else getting the vibe that she could really care less about what goes on with Buffy now? To me that seems weird, (to play a character so well for so long and not get a bond) but I'm hardly a representaion of majority!

I find it disappointing that the bigger stars haven't shown much interest yet the smaller ones have.

Obviously Tom Lenk, Seth Green and i'm guessing Nick Brendon read it regularly. But it would be nice if the bigger stars like Sarah and Eliza read it, atleast Anthony Head wants to read it when he has time.

I wonder if David, Amy or Alexis read AtF....

She cares. She's just very, very busy. And a lot of what she's busy with is Not Being Buffy Anymore. It's not that she regrets it, she just wants to move on.

It is a bit strange that nobody brought up the subject of Buffy's interesting new sexual activities to her until PaleyFest, especially considering it's one of the world's top-selling comics. But celebrities do kind of live in their own little world sometimes.

Relieved to hear that, i understand fearing the type cast...sometimes that fear gets militant and you have nothing to do with the character anymore...no intrest or acknowledgement. She hasn't gone that far she still does the cons.
While for us, as fans, it would be cool that SMG kept up with the comics, I understand her not doing it. I mean, think about... the series ended in 2003, that was six years ago. She's definitely moved on since then, and yes Buffy was a HUGE part of her life, but for her, the role is over. She's an actress, a wife, a celebrity, she's got other things going on.

As for the other cast members that do keep up (Nicky and Tom) well, not to sound too mean, but they don't really have anything else going on... well, Tom did do some guest spots, but that's all that comes to mind.

And Seth, well, he's just a big ol nerd! (In a good way!) lol

I remember Wesly Snipes really getting infatuated with Blade to the point some in Hollywood said it was not normal. I get that SMG has her own real life, of course that takes precidence

I just think that if you play a role for awhile and are good at it, it seems weird to me not to keep up with it. Thats probably why i'm not an actor though, they can't afford to fixate on their own work as freely as we fans can...they don't want to pigion hole themselves maybe?

It almost goes to show that just because your an actor/actress of a series...that doesn't make you a fan of the character.

Maybe thats the difference, SMG doesn't have enough geek (in a good way) in her to care to avidly follow the character she played for seven years. Harrison Ford can likely say the same thing about the new starwars novels and how Han turned out.

In fact maybe SMG is more the rule than the exception.

I don't get this at all. As per usual whenever a straight white male weighs in on any "gay related" theme on this site he can expect to get totally burned by the masses so I usually just leave these things alone but not on this one.

So if I am to understand, any suppossed straight person who has any same sex experience in their life is now no longer considered straight.

Would the same then apply to gay folk who have straight experiences in their lives? Can they no longer consider themselves gay?

After mentioning Joss' dislike of static labels I find this black and white take on human sexuallity fairly limited. Like do folks have to sign up for one team or the other? If life were only that simple.

The fact that Buffy has feelings for Satsu hardly discredits her as a straight person going through an experimental phase, it just makes her more human.

(However, as it is a free world, anyone has the right to label and minmize the human experience down to the common denominators that best allow them to cope so knock yourself out)

As a last point, if someone had ever made such a huge generalization about gay people on this site I am sure they would have been flamed big time. (I could go on and on about how generalizations of any kind about any sex, creed, religion, sexual preference etc. are the basis of all predjudice but I won't bother - I guess it's ok as long as those generalizations are made against the straight, the white and those considered MAJORITY)

I guess the answer to the question you ask depends on the result of the experiment. Some don't have to try both flavors to tell which one is right for them. others switch favorites after trying or go back, some end up two scooping it.

What in the hell are you even talking about?

The idea that Buffy might be gay really does push a lot of buttons, doesn't it? Sorry, you'll get no "retraction" from me now or ever.

The thing is, nobody is really arguing that. The two main relationships that come up for debate on these boards are Woz and Batsu. Both of those relationships were clearly based on something more than experementation. Buffy even said so herself. To me, that clearly shows that she can't be straight. Whether she chooses to identify as such is entirely beside the point.

THANK YOU.

I know perfectly well that a Buffy/Satsu pairing is probably not going to happen in the comic, at least not in the near future. But it just annoys me that anyone can read through all of the interactions between those two characters in WatG, A Beautiful Sunset, etc., and think it's just some casual "experimentation" between those two.

Don't get all offended, most relationships start as experiments. Buffy can like who ever she wants to, from sexual history she is now gay. Will she choose to remain so? I don't know.
