Afghanistan Has Legalized Rape

About what Perny said - my mum, she works with people that have been sexually abused and most of them have mental problems as a reprocussion of that abuse.

What is that supposed to mean? It's TRUE! The people have been messed with (especially women) the whole time these sick Taliban leaders where in control. How does that have no place on the board?

You've been speaking as if every person in Afghanistan is responsible for this legislation. I posted this article because this is a terrible, but that doesn't mean every person in Afghanistan should be condemned. Nothing good comes from such generalizations.

Saying nothing is tantamount to being responsible.
Yeah, but they have to follow it. So it really doesn't matter whether or not they passed it. And come on...how many of those men are really going to ignore it. It's sick. Sick sick people. There's no point to that area being on earth.

You keep going about how much damage the Taliban leaders have caused in Afghanistan but you don't seem to completely grasp the whole concept.

The men of Afghanistan know only too well what will/would have happened to them had they tried to prevent this law being passed, and to suggest that they didn't because they want to rape their wives is a completely unjustified if you take in to consideration what the whole country has suffered in recent years.

Anyway...I heard about this on the radio, it's awful. Things like this remind me to be SO thankful for the life I live and the country I live in, regardless of what might be going on at present. It is so shocking that in this day and age, no matter what country, women are still legally subservient to men.

I grasp the whole concept I'm just not saying what you want to hear. And I think the whole "they know what would happen to them" is an excuse.

I haven't been speaking this way. But these people have been living under conditions of the sick Taliban leaders and they have been messed with all this time. But on a side note: now that it's legal, do you really expect all these husbands to just ignore it?

Because it is a gross, unfounded generalisation.

Should Germany have been wiped off the map because of the sins of Hitler and the Nazis? They were subject to years of his vicious, hateful rule. Or what about Russia? Shall we get rid of there too because of the cruelties inflicted during Stalin's reign?

The crimes of a nations few does not determine the quality and integrity of that entire nation. What you are suggesting is the extermination of a race.

The legalisation of rape in Afghanistan is disgusting and something that needs to be reversed but you questioning the 'point' of the Afghan people is equally disgusting.

That is why those types of comments have no place here.

You have. You said, "there's no point in this area being on earth." And do I expect husbands to ignore it? Honestly, in my opinion, the kind of man that would rape his wife is not the kind of man who probably cares much about whether it's legal in the first place. Probably some would, but that doesn't mean most would. Just watch the way you word things. Honestly saying that an entire group of people has no place on Earth sounds very Hitler-esque.

EDIT: Ha, Kean made a similar comparison!

And I think the whole "they know what would happen to them" is an excuse.

An excuse?! The people in Afghanistan and many others like it who living under such a rule as this will be persecuted, tortured and murdered for even thinking about standing up to the Taliban or whoever governs them.
To say this is an excuse is a discredit to the people of Afghanistan, suggesting that they want to live in such circumstances. It is very easy for someone who doesn't have to live every day under a dictatorial government to say that not trying to change law/policy because of what might happen to them, is an excuse. We have that privilege, the people of Afghanistan do not.

Back on topic though, have there been any reports or anything mentioned about any other countries trying to get involved?

Situations like this make me so angry, I find it really shocking that people have to live like this. Like the situation in Zimbabwe; it's just awful and wish something could be done.

I think I've pretty much made my points about what the rest of you had said, but I am NOT generalizing. OBVIOUSLY not every Afghanistan person doesn't feel this way, but not every Japanese resident felt hatred toward Hawaii when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Not every United States resident felt hatred toward Japan when the United States bombed Japan back. I'm not generalizing. And don't ever call me gross because that is the LAST thing that I am. Thank You.

How can you possibly know what each man is going to do? Just because it's been made legal, doesn't mean every man will start raping his wife. As Lindsey pointed out, in Scotland, it was legal for a mad to rape his wife until 1989. Do you really think every man did it? JUST because they knew they could?

You can't judge something like this from the outside. Yes, it's an idioctic law that needs to be changed, like, yesterday, but we have no idea what is going on within that country, we don't run it, we have no control over and, and therefore we have no right to sit here and comdem the people who are forced to live under the ruling of these idiots.

Once Again, I know that not EVERY person won't do it, and that everyone is different, but if you really expect these people, living the way they do, having strange customs against women and that sort of thing, to not take advantage of this? If you think most won't than I feel bad for you. Also, Scotland and the Middle East are two completely different places.

Why is everyone going to such lengths to defend a country that not too long ago, many of it's people thought it would be a good idea to crash some planes into the world trade center where many of us lost people that we care about?

But it wasn't only the government who had it in for the United States. I mean I understand what you all are trying to say, but this isn't just any old country we are talking about. Let's say this law was made in the United States, there would be a crap load of people who would follow it, and a crap load who wouldn't. But knowing that these people in Afghanistan's culture, religion, and ways of living already disrespects women and doesn't think of them as barely anything to begin with, it kind of changes things. There are probably some men that didn't want this to pass, but because most of them were brought up the way they were, thinking of women as less than them, this really probably didn't phase many of them. So it's really not just the government. I have a hard time believing that they are all just forced into this and none of them want to...

Way to come off sounding like a racist, Harm. 😉

Anwyay, of course this is an awful law. Another way to oppress women, that I find depressing.

Actually, it's the Taliban's rule that disrespects women, not the Afghans'. They really were forced into this. I would suggest you maybe do some (unbiased) reading on the history of Afghanistan before making up your mind on the people there.

well then how come, after the taliban fell in 2001, are they still treated like crap? seems like something else is going on here....
I'm racist, but they are the ones with those customs against women. The one that make them cover their whole bodies. Heck, yesterday I saw on Google News this article about a video someone took of how some woman (in Afghanistan or Pakistan or something --- whats the diff) walked out of her house without a male escort and was pinned down and whipped and beaten for it, and everybody just stood around and watched and made videos of it. The whole thing is sick, just like this law.

I'm not racist, I know I'm not racist, and If I come off that way than oh well. But I'm not going to apologize or feel bad about how I feel, because I am not going to be sorry about who I am and what I feel about things.
